Shed Type and Roof Size
This is a high quality workshop, providing a large amount of storage and work space. Featuring an apex roof, you won’t have to worry about rainwater building up and damaging the timber. It is also covered with a heavy duty sand felt, with the option to upgrade to Superior duty felt for additional peace of mind. This will come at an extra cost but it may be worthwhile to ensure your equipment is properly protected.
The eaves reach 1.84m in height, while the roof measures 2.55m. This provides a substantial amount of internal space. The double doors measure 1116 mm wide and 1770 mm tall. Other measures to take note of are the width which totals 3.05m and the depth which also totals 3.05m.
Cladding, Frame and Floor
Built with superior quality 12mm Shiplap tongue and groove cladding, this is one of the highest quality workshops you can invest in. Designed to really last, Shiplap cladding is the most durable and weatherproof type of cladding used in wooden outdoor buildings. The tongue and groove aspect of the construction is also an important feature as it leaves an expansion gap to account for any expansion in the timber caused by seasonal changes. Another benefit is the strength of the cladding. It enables you to hang heavy items on the walls or attach shelving as and where it’s needed.
The framing is larger than standard framing used on outdoor storage sheds. It measures 45mm x 27mm. What we really like about the construction of this shed is the fact that both the floor and the roof are also created from tongue and groove cladding. This gives it an incredibly sturdy build and ensures you can store any machinery you need without worrying about its weight.
Treatment Requirement and Warranty
Walton’s does apply a water-based treatment in order to protect the building during transit. However, the workshop still needs to be treated after it’s been put together, then the frequency of reapplication will depend upon what treatment you use. We tend to recommend the spirit based treatments with Shiplap cladding. This is because the treatment works deep down into the panels, rather than just the surface; providing a strong water barrier. It also doesn’t need to be applied annually so in the long term it saves you both time and money. The only thing that may put you off this type of treatment is that there is very little colour choice available. As the workshop is unpainted you may want to add a bit of colour. If this is the case you could opt for a water based treatment, but it will need to be applied each year.
Providing you follow the manufacturer’s treatment instructions, you will benefit from a 10 year anti-rot guarantee.
Doors and Windows
As you would expect from a large building, this workshop comes with double doors. They open up to reveal a nice, spacious interior.
They are also protected with a Rim lock, which means children and potential thieves won’t be able to get in.
It doesn’t come with windows so it gives you plenty of privacy to work, as well as ensuring your valuable machinery cannot be seen from outside.
Security and Privacy
We love the privacy and security this workshop offers. As mentioned, it comes with a Rim lock, but you also have the choice to invest in a weatherproof padlock complete with hasp and staple for extra peace of mind. As nobody can see into the workshop when it’s locked up, you are also guaranteed total privacy.
Customisation Options and Extras
There are two main customisation options available including the chance to upgrade the floor and the roof. Now the Extra Strength floor support pack isn’t an upgrade you necessarily have to make as the workshop does come with a standard floor support kit. This will strengthen the floor enough to hold medium weight items. However, if you’re planning on storing heavy, bulky machinery then it would make sense to invest in the strongest floor you can find. In terms of the roof, you can upgrade to a superior duty fiberglass felt that comes in a charcoal colour. It provides a better water-resistant surface and doesn’t require any adhesive to be fitted properly.
As well as these two customisable options, there are also some extras you can add to your order. These include a 49mm weather-proof padlock with hasp and staple, draper accessories and a range of garden treatments. Treatments are a necessity, but Walton’s have thrown in a free 5L Golden Brown treatment which can save you money if you aren’t planning on buying a different colour.
Like the majority of Walton’s buildings, we really can’t fault this one. The Shiplap cladding is a superior quality material and you can tell from the workshops design that no expense has been spared.
Longevity Of Materials 8.2/10
As a general rule, Shiplap cladding lasts the longest out of all of the cladding types. However, it still needs to be treated before it can offer full protection.
The workshop provides plenty of space and benefits from an apex roof which increases its interior height. It should fit most people’s needs, though as it is a large building it won’t be suitable for all gardens.
Ease Of Installation 7.5/10
The only reason we gave this a 7.5 out of 10 is because it is heavy, requires 2 people to build and will take time. The construction itself is simple and the instructions are easy to understand.
This workshop does come at a pretty high cost but it is worthwhile for what you get. The fact that it is secure, private and built to a very high standard makes it a worthwhile investment.
Final Thoughts: This high quality workshop is designed to stand the test of time, offering privacy, security and a generous amount of space. It has excellent weather protection and can be upgraded with a number of extras. While it does come at a very high cost, it is worthwhile in the long run. Just remember to measure your garden as the building is pretty big and it won’t fit in all gardens.
