Shed Type and Roof Size
This 10×8 wooden storage shed has a unique Dutch Barn design. It is this feature which really sets it apart. You will notice the majority of sheds tend to have an apex style roof so if you’re looking for something a bit different this is an excellent choice. The barn style provides an extremely attractive design that will add real character to the garden.
The design of the building also has the added advantage of providing plenty of height. Rather than simply adding extra height centrally down the shed like an Apex roof, the Dutch Barn roof extends the height all the way to the sides. The roof height measures 2.62m while the eaves measure 1.73m.
Other measurements to be aware of include the width at 2.43m, the depth at 3.03m and the door height and width which are 1.78m and 1.35m. Overall this is an extremely spacious storage space which enables you to store practically anything you desire.
Cladding, Frame and Floor
The sheds high quality design is all thanks to the 12mm Shiplap tongue and groove cladding. Known in the industry as the toughest type of cladding available, it helps to create an extremely stable, tough, weather resistant finish. You will see that each board has a small groove which is designed to carry water away from the material. Not only that, but this thick cladding also helps to keep the shed more secure. It is extremely hard to break into so combined with the windowless design, you’re given complete peace of mind.
The framework is also pretty impressive. Measuring 1” x 1”, this shed benefits from rounded framing. This creates a flawless finish and prevents splinters, as well as strengthening the overall structure.
What we are really impressed with however is the floor. If you’ve compared various types of sheds, you’ll notice a lot of them feature solid sheet material floors. While these do provide a sturdy surface, they aren’t really the best quality. This shed features a 12mm tongue and groove floor which provides maximum support and durability.
Treatment Requirement and Warranty
Like many of Walton’s buildings, this shed comes with a 10 year anti-rot warranty. However, what the company doesn’t make very clear is that this warranty is only applicable if you use a high quality treatment once you have assembled it. The warranty will also be subject to the use of regular treatments as highlighted by the manufacturer.
Now with this particular shed you have two choices. You can save money and add a little colour by opting for a water based treatment. These provide adequate protection and ensure the surface of the building is fully waterproof. However, you will find that these types of treatments do need to be reapplied once a year.
The other option you have is a spirit based treatment. These are the highest quality treatments available and they are complement Shiplap cladding buildings by penetrating into the actual timber. What this does is provide a full waterproof barrier and it also strengthens the material. It doesn’t need to be reapplied on an annual basis either so the initial higher cost is made up for over time.
Doors and Windows
Just like you’d see on an actual barn, this shed has large double doors that open up really wide to provide direct access into the interior. Compared to other sheds, they offer a generous amount of space which makes moving anything in and out of the building a piece of cake. They are well secured with a RIM lock which means only you will have access to the shed.
There are no windows which is excellent in terms of security. However, on the flip side of this it does mean there is very little lighting in the shed. This might not be a problem in summer if you have the doors wide open. However, on darker days unless you want to use a torch, it could be worth looking into having an electrical pack fitted.
Security and Privacy
As there is no way to see what is inside the shed, this is an excellent choice if you’re considering storing valuable items. The cladding also makes the building harder to damage and break into. The lock is another security feature and you even have the option to make it safer by investing in a 49mm weatherproof padlock.
Customisation and Extra Options
Before looking at the customisation options, it’s worth seeing what’s actually included with the shed. Waltons provide a free floor support kit which consists of a 28mm solid sheet board. Considering the standard floor only measures 10mm thick, this is an excellent free upgrade that will provide a lot of additional strength. You will also receive a free 5l garden treatment in a golden brown colour. So provided you like the colour, you do save a little money on something that is actually needed.
There are quite a few different customisation options available. Firstly if you plan on keeping heavy or bulky items in the shed, it’s worth considering the extra strength floor support pack. This is tougher than the upgrade supplied for free with the shed and it basically gives you peace of mind that you can store anything without any problems.
Perhaps the most useful upgrade is the 10×8 Walton’s Portabase. It is absolutely essential that the shed is built on a flat, solid surface. The Portabase gives you an excellent, strong foundation for the shed to be built on. It also helps to lift it further off the ground, preventing any chance of the floor rotting.
Finally there are different Cuprinol garden treatments available which allow you to alter the colour of the shed, whilst protecting it at the same time. Lavender, seagrass and Country Cream are just some of the choices on offer.
A 2 person job, this style shed isn’t the easiest to construct. The instructions are great and everything you need is included, but it is a time consuming and heavy labour job.
Compared to similar size sheds, this one is a little on the expensive side. However, you’re not just paying for the attractive and unique barn style; you’re also paying extra for the strong Shiplap cladding construction. So when you compare its longevity to that of lesser quality sheds, you realise it does provide good value for money.
Quality of construction 10/10
Thanks to the premium Shiplap cladding, this shed is one of the strongest on the market. It boasts fantastic quality and it looks great too.
Longevity of material 8.2/10
In order to gain maximum durability benefits, it is vital you treat the shed. Shiplap is the strongest type of cladding and provides excellent protection within itself, but it still needs to be properly treated in order to stand the test of time.
There is ample space to store most things in this attractive shed. The apex roof also enables you to store taller items if needed. It isn’t the largest shed available in the Walton’s range but it should still provide plenty of storage for the average person.
Final Thoughts: This unique shed has been designed with both looks and practicality in mind. There isn’t anything we don’t really like about it. The construction is brilliant, the style looks fantastic in any garden and there is plenty of space available. It’s a high quality shed that is capable of withstanding the harsh British weather. Come rain or shine, this building will manage to keep your belongings safe, dry and secure.
