Shed Type and Roof Size
This is a deep, spacious apex wooden storage shed. Covered with heavy duty sand felt, the roof offers dramatic water-resistant qualities. Ensuring rainfall doesn’t build up on top of the roof, rot and damp issues are drastically minimised. As you’ll see from the shape of the roof, water runs down each side, right off onto the floor. This isn’t its only benefit however. As it comes with an upside down V design, inside the shed you’ll find there is a lot of headroom to work with. Not only will this make the building a lot easier to manoeuvre around in, but it is also great for keeping taller tools and gym equipment in. Made out of 12mm tongue and groove cladding, you also have reassurance that the roof is designed to withstand a lot of pressure.
The shed’s roof and eaves height are taller than average, with the eaves measuring 1.69m and the roof totalling 2.26m. As mentioned earlier, it is the depth of the building that provides such a spacious design, measuring in at 3.63m. The width is actually fairly compact in comparison, totalling 2.42m. Waltons have also made sure the double doors give you substantial space, measuring 1.35m wide and 1.73m tall.
Cladding, Frame and Floor
Thanks to the 12mm Shiplap tongue and groove cladding, this isn’t just a standard storage shed. The cladding gives it a premium quality and an ultra-durable design. Tongue and groove forms an interlocking style, ensuring it is both wind and watertight. It also provides an expansion gap, helping to support any changes that occur in the wood due to seasonal heat and moisture alterations.
Out of the three types of cladding typically used on sheds, Shiplap is considered the highest quality. It is more expensive for manufacturers to work with, which is reflected in the higher cost in comparison to overlap cladding. Its standout feature is its water resistant design. Within each panel, there’s a useful groove which is used to direct rainwater away from the wood. Similar to the benefits of the apex roof, this channel stops the water from building up and causing potentially expensive damp problems.
Double framing has been added to the corners of the building, helping to give it a much more secure and water-tight build. We also like that Waltons have used slightly thicker framing with this building, measuring 45mm x 27mm. They have also planed and rounded the frame so that splinters won’t be a problem and it further adds to the shed’s moisture resistance.
If you’re hoping to store gym equipment, heavy machinery and large gardening equipment then you’ll also be pleased to see that the floor is constructed with 12mm tongue and groove.
Treatment Requirements and Warranty
All of Walton’s wooden sheds require treatments in order to make sure they live up to their weather-resistant reputation. It’s worth being aware that there are actually two types of treatments available. Spirit based treatments are the ones we always recommend.
With a spirit treatment, the formula gets to work by penetrating into the timber. Once inside, it forms an interior barrier that prevents any moisture from soaking through. This significantly reduces the risk of warping. Of course, it also provides a barrier on the surface of the timber too. So basically you are getting a 2-in-1 form of protection.
The other, cheaper option you have is water based treatments. The main thing you’ll notice is these come at a cheaper price. The reason behind this is because unlike the spirit treatments, they don’t penetrate into the wood. Instead they simply form an external barrier. This is actually really effective, though it will need to be topped up once a year. The water treatments do have one advantage over the spirit based options and that’s the different coloured varieties on offer. There are a few coloured spirit treatments available, but there definitely isn’t as much choice.
Waltons actually give the timber a water based treatment before it is shipped off. However, this is purely there to protect the building throughout transit. The company states that if you want to be applicable for the 10 year anti-rot warranty, you need to treat the building with a high quality preservative after it’s been installed.
Doors and Windows
Waltons have given the double doors of this shed an extra-wide design. This offers exceptional convenience, allowing you to get even the bulkiest equipment in and out with ease. They also come fitted with a Rim lock which not only provides great security, but it also gives them a more stylish design. What we like about the design of the doors, as well as the extra-wide build, is that they feature strong cross beams. Running diagonally down the door, these beams are there to stop them from sagging.
The shed also features two fairly large styrene glazed windows which can be opened and closed. This lets you ventilate the building and makes it more comfortable to use in the summer months. The 2.5mm styrene glazing is shatterproof, giving you reassurance if you have small children. You also have the option to install the windows on the left or the right side of the shed, adding to its convenience.
Security and Privacy
This is one of Waltons more secure sheds. Shiplap cladding is well known for its tough thief-proof benefits. However, the Rim lock and shatterproof windows also help to increase the shed’s security. The only thing you may be unsure about is the privacy of the building. As it does have fairly big windows, your storage will obviously be able to be seen from the outside. However, we’d recommend installing blinds or even curtains if your garden isn’t very private. Remember, you also have the option to choose which side the windows are located on so this gives you some control over its privacy.
Customisation Options and Extras
It’s easy to become overwhelmed by the amount of extras available for this building. So below we’ll highlight what we feel are the most noteworthy.
First up we have the 12×8 Waltons Pro Shed Base. It’s true this is one of the more expensive extras available, but its benefits do make up for the high cost. It’s really important that the shed is built on a sturdy base. It not only helps to make sure the building is structurally stable, but it can also help to prevent damp and makes installation a lot quicker and simpler. This particular base also has the added advantage of being environmentally friendly.
Another notable extra is the wooden shelf sets. There are three different lengths to choose from and two tier options available. Opt for 3ft, 4ft or 5ft sets and if you choose the 4ft shelves you can opt for either a double or triple tier set. What’s remarkable about these shelves is that they are created with outstanding 16mm tongue and groove planed timber. This makes them really strong and they’ll be able to hold toolboxes and other heavy tools. They may not be an essential extra, but they can prove extremely useful and enhance the amount of storage space available.
Two other extras available are the extra strength floor support pack and the superior duty felt. Now usually we’d rave about the benefits of the extra strength support pack. However, as the floor of this shed has a 12mm tongue and groove construction, the support pack isn’t required. You also receive a free 28mm standard support pack so you can increase the floor’s strength without having to spend any extra money anyway. However, you can opt for the extra strength pack purely for peace of mind. The superior duty felt is another extra that’s really down to personal preference. It will increase the amount of protection provided on the roof as the felt is made up of fibreglass. This doesn’t perish over time and it offers excellent water-resistance. So it could be worth investing in if you want to increase the building’s longevity.
A 49mm weatherproof padlock with hasp and staple is also available, although the Rim lock included with the shed does provide good security. So again this isn’t needed, but it can help to give the shed that little bit more security which is definitely worthwhile if your garden isn’t overly secure.
From the tongue and groove floor and the shatterproof windows, to the extra thick, rounded and planed framing; this shed says quality from the inside out.
Longevity Of Materials 9/10
As literally every part of the building has been created with thick cladding, it has a naturally long lasting design. However, it does need to be treated to ensure it lives up to the rot-resistant warranty.
Compared to a lot of other sheds of the same size, this one offers a fantastic level of storage. The extra thick floor makes it suitable for storing anything from small gardening tools to large heavy boxes. Then there’s the option to add shelving to the inside walls. It’s a very generously spaced building which should suit everyone’s storage needs.
Ease Of Installation 8/10
Whilst relatively straight forward, the shed does take some time to put together. It is also a 2 person job. Even though the process is easy, you can still expect to put in a lot of hard work.
Due to its sensational quality and excellent features, this shed offers great value for money. It will last for a very long time and comes with many weatherproof benefits.
Final Thoughts: The Waltons Groundsman range of sheds are created to an extraordinary high standard. Built with stability, style and practicality in mind, this building comes at a great low price. There are a few features that set this shed apart from others in the Waltons collection. For example, we really like that the styrene glazed windows can be opened to let in good levels of ventilation. The included Rim lock is also great for security, while the all-round tongue and groove construction really boosts the strength of the building. It is suitable for use as a storage shed, workshop or home office.
