Shed Type and Roof Size
This is a 16×10 modular style workshop which comes complete with an apex style roof. Apex tends to be the most popular style of roof used by manufacturers due to its weatherproof and spacious benefits. It is also protected with heavy duty sand felt with the option to upgrade to superior quality felt. Of course, this upgrade will bump up the cost slightly. However, we feel that if you’re spending such a large sum of money initially, it’s worth paying a little more to ensure you are left with the most durable and weatherproof construction.
The roof measures 2.56m in height and the eaves measure 1.84m. This makes it a great choice if you’re taller than the average person. You won’t need to worry about banging your head if you forget to duck down like you do in smaller sheds.
Other measurements to take into account are the depth which measures 4.80m, the width which measures 3.05m and the door width and height which measure 1116mm and 1770mm respectively
Cladding Frame and Floor
Constructed with superb quality Shiplap tongue and groove cladding, the workshop has a long-lasting, ultra-strong design. Rest assured that this building will really last the test of time. Shiplap cladding provides excellent weather protection due to the small groove incorporated within each panel. It basically helps to channel the water away from the workshop, causing it instead to drip directly down onto the floor. So if you live in a particularly rainy part of the country, you won’t need to worry about rot or damp problems.
The frame measures 2” x 1” and ensures a solid and secure structure. Not all workshops come with a floor included but this one does. Unlike a lot of sheds created by Waltons, this workshop comes with a strong 12mm tongue and groove floor. It is also protected against damp and rot thanks to the 1” x 1” bearers. These help to lift the workshop off the ground, ensuring moisture doesn’t become a problem.
Treatment Requirements and Warranty
The workshop will need to be treated as soon as you have constructed it, then further treatment times will depend upon the type you choose. You have the choice to treat Shiplap cladding with either a water based or spirit based treatment. There are pros and cons to each type so it helps to be aware of these before you decide which one to opt for.
If you don’t want to worry about annual treatments, we recommend choosing a spirit based variety. They penetrate deep into the timber, providing longer and more effective protection against the elements. The only downside to this type of treatment is the fact that they come in very limited colour options. So if you’re hoping to give the shed colour, you would be better off choosing the water based treatments as these come in a variety of different colours.
Water based treatments are really effective, but they only protect the actual surface of the timber. Therefore they need to be reapplied more frequently. After treating the workshop once it has been built, you will then need to reapply the treatment on an annual basis. Always read the manufacturer’s instructions on how frequently to reapply as this is a requirement if you want to benefit from the workshop’s warranty.
Provided you do treat the shed according to the manufacturer’s instructions, you are covered by a 10 year anti-rot warranty.
Doors and Windows
Double doors open up to reveal plenty of space to transfer even the largest items with ease in and out of the workshop. They are also fitted with a RIM lock for extra security. Even the handle on the door has a stylish rounded design. It’s great to see that no detail has been left untouched throughout the design.
There are no windows at all on this shed which makes it both private and secure. As you will likely be storing expensive machinery, the last thing you need is thieves looking in to see what they can potentially steal. The only downside to the windowless design is from an aesthetic point of view. Due to the huge size of the building, it doesn’t have the most attractive design. However you can solve this problem by painting it a brighter colour.
Security and Privacy
If you’re looking for a secure, private workshop then this is one of the best models you can opt for. It really doesn’t get much more secure than this. As mentioned its windowless design ensures whatever you store is 100% private from prying eyes. The superior quality cladding also makes the workshop virtually impossible to break into. Then you have the RIM lock which ensures only you have access to the building.
If you want to increase security even further, there is also the option to upgrade to a 49mm weatherproof padlock with hasp and staple.
Customisation Options and Extras
There aren’t many customisation options available with this building. However, the ones available can help to improve security, change the workshop’s aesthetics and boost its overall strength.
The first option you have is whether you want to upgrade to Superior Duty felt. The heavy duty mineral felt included with the building is designed to a high quality and should protect against year round wear and tear. However, the Superior Duty felt is designed to make the roof that little bit more durable, helping to give complete peace of mind. You also have two different colour choices including charcoal and olive green.
Another worthwhile upgrade, though not completely essential, is the extra strength floor support pack. The existing tongue and groove floor is extremely strong anyway, but this extra support pack provides additional stability which can be important when storing extremely heavy machinery. It is worth noting that the workshop does come with a free floor support kit as well as a free golden brown treatment.
Of course these customisation options mean you will end up spending more on the workshop. This is a daunting aspect when you think about how much you are already going to be paying. However, you need to think of long term value for money. By making the workshop as secure and weatherproof as possible, it will last a lot longer and potentially save you a lot of money in the long term.
This is one of the highest quality workshops we have reviewed. While upgrades are available to improve the durability of the shed, they aren’t essential which means you don’t need to spend extra money if you don’t want to.
Longevity Of Materials
The materials used fair well against the elements and do offer a high level of protection. However, the workshop does need to be treated once it has been constructed. Obviously this takes up extra time and more expense if you want to opt for a coloured treatment. A free treatment is included so that does lower the cost if you are happy with the colour provided.
This workshop provides an extremely generous amount of space. However, because of its size it won’t be suitable for everyone.
Ease Of Installation
As you would expect from a building this size, it isn’t overly easy to put together. It requires 2 people and will take a long time to construct. The instructions are simple enough to follow and the panels do fit together easily. It is the extremely hard labour and time constraint that made us give this building a 7.5 out of 10 rating.
While the workshop does offer excellent value for money, it is still pretty expensive. However, the quality, longevity and storage space do make up for the high cost.
Final Thoughts: At first glance the high cost can put you off investing in this workshop. However, when you break down the benefits and actually look deep into what you are being offered, you soon realise it is actually great value for money. When you need an extra-large storage space for heavy machinery, it is vital you choose a workshop that can handle the weight as well as help to keep them secure. For us this building is one of the most secure we have seen. The amount of space you get to store your machinery and work in is incredible. It is one of the largest buildings in the range and is highly recommended for those looking to set up a workshop at home. However, obviously due to the size it isn’t going to fit in a lot of gardens so you will need to take proper measurements before you buy.
Overall we do recommend this shed if you have the space and the budget to accommodate it. You will struggle to find a better quality, more secure workshop on the market.
