Shed Type, Roof Size
This good sized workshop from Windsor is based upon the traditional design of a garden shed, with its interlocking cladding, and apex roof covered with a tough mineral felt. What first struck us about this building however was its size, so it’s ideal for a medium or large garden. Thanks to its open plan interior, you can use it as you see fit and fit a lot more in than you might initially expect.
The apex roof is very tall and dominates the shed underneath it. We were pleased to see that it was made of tongue and groove rather than solid sheet material, as this gives it added durability. The ridge height is 2.55m and the eaves height is 1.81m, which is significantly taller than many that we see. The overall width of the shed is 3.07m and the overall depth is 4.81, which again are generous dimensions.
Cladding, Frame and Floor
We sometimes see tongue and groove cladding used on the walls but not on the roof or floor, even at this price, so we were glad to see that the same tongue and groove cladding had been used on all these surfaces. It’s thickness of 12mm is the same as most cladding we see on timber buildings at this price level, but it was good to see that the frame was slightly thicker than most at 27 X 45mm.
If you plan to keep machinery, or even vehicles, inside then you may want to think about reinforcing the floor. We were pleased to see, however, that it came with integrated and pressure treated floor joists which should prove effective at preventing ground moisture getting into the timbers and causing rot.
Treatment Requirement and Warranty
Whilst the superior pressure treatment method of preservation has been used on the floor joists, it was a pity to see that the less durable dip treatment had been used on the rest of the timbers. This means that the customer has to treat the shed themselves with a good quality wood preserver every year. Even so, the ten year anti-rot warranty provided by the manufacturer does add both value and peace of mind.
Doors and Windows
The large double doors really stood out for us, as having wide and tall doors on a workshop can save valuable time when moving heavy, tall, or wide objects in or out. With a width of 1.35m and a height of 1.77m these doors certainly scored highly on this criteria. Strongly hinged and fully braced, they also feel reassuringly strong in operation.
There are two large windows, and because the panels are interchangeable they can be positioned on either side of the workshop, which we feel is a neat touch. We were glad to see that they featured styrene glazing, as whilst this has a good clarity it’s much tougher than standard glass and therefore hard to crack or shatter.
The strong double doors and tough styrene windows were in themselves very welcome, but the security feature we liked most of all was the key operated lock. It not only performs very well, in that it creates a garage door that’s as hard to open as a house door, it can also act as a deterrent to some thieves as it looks strong and hard to break.
If the thought of assembling your own shed seems too daunting, especially one of this size, then a professional installation service is available, priced at £374.99. Our advice would be to assemble it yourself however, as with a friend’s help and by the following the straightforward instructions it can be easier than you imagine. All fixtures and fittings are included, but if you need some high quality tools to do the job then an assembly assistance tool kit can also be bought for £39.99. Tubs of a high quality wood protector are also available as an optional extra, but do check coverage rates as you could need a lot to treat a workshop of this size.
It was good to see that tongue and groove cladding was used on the walls, floor, and roof, and this was representative of the high quality shown throughout.
Longevity Of materials 8.5/10
Whilst we would have preferred to see a pressure treatment used all over, and not just on the floor joists, the dip treatment does provide a basic protection.
This has more than enough storage room for most people’s needs, especially with the tall eaves as well.
Ease of installation 8/10
This can be assembled by two people, but its size means that you should allow six to eight hours for this. Alternatively, you can use the optional assembly service and save time, if not money.
It can’t be said that this workshop is inexpensive, but considering its size and that it does include everything that’s needed to start using it, we feel it represents reasonable value for money.
