Sheds featuring log stores, and stand alone log stores, are becoming increasingly popular, and we’re glad to see this shift towards more environmentally sustainable fuel. With the cost of energy remaining at a high level, it also makes sound financial sense to use timber logs and in so doing cut down on gas and electricity consumption. When collecting and storing logs you’ll also need an easy and convenient way to cut them down to size, and this wooden saw horse from Store-Plus ticks both boxes.

It’s very robustly made and keeps logs of all shapes and sizes firmly in place while you cut them into the perfect logs for your stove or open fire. It’s suitable for use inside or outside your home and can even be fixed permanently into position, for example on a veranda outside a shed or workshop or on a patio area. Lightweight and easy to manoeuvre, we found it reassuringly strong in use.

This is a classic design that makes sawing logs safe and quick, which are after all the two main factors when it comes to log preparation. If you already have a log burning stove, use logs on your fire, or are thinking of doing so, then this makes an ideal and highly affordable addition. Made of thick timber, it’s built to last.

Let's Take a Closer Look...

How it Works

1ft 11 x 2ft 5 Store-Plus Wooden Saw Horse 2Sawing logs is essential if you have a log fire or log burning stove, after all they don’t come in one handy size. Without the right equipment, however, it can be a time consuming operation and, what’s worse, potentially a dangerous one as well. That’s why we feel a high quality saw horse such as this is an essential purchase for people who have to saw logs on a regular basis.

The horse itself consists of eight sturdy pieces of timber that are fastened together to form a cradle. The log is simply placed in between the V-shape at the top of the horse, and one hand can then hold it firmly in place while the other hand operates the saw.

Size and Load Bearing

When in position the saw horse has a height of 1.00m, and has a width of 0.76m and a depth of 0.60m. In operation we found this a very convenient height, equating to three foot three inches, and it meant that logs can be sawn efficiently without the need to stoop down too much, which can bring benefits for you and your back. We appreciate, however, that some people are taller than others. That’s why we feel that this saw horse could have been improved still further if different heights were available, or even if this one model could feature an adjustable height through the use of extending legs.

Designed to take heavy logs, it feels solid and sturdy when in use. The overall strength is provided by the use of two thick horizontal timbers on both sides of the structure. Further stability can be achieved by screwing the item onto a solid and level surface, although the screws for this would need to be purchased separately.

Benefits When In Use

If you have a large house to heat, then you’ll need to use a lot of logs, and time spent cutting logs could be more profitably spent elsewhere. That’s one of the two major advantages we found when using this well constructed saw horse. Because the logs being cut are held firmly in place, the act of sawing them down to size becomes much quicker. It’s also a much safer operation in our opinion, as you won’t have to worry about logs sliding or rolling off during the procedure, or the log turning and causing the saw to slip when in use.

Appearance and Colour

The saw horse boasts a simple and yet effective design. Because it’s made entirely of natural timber, held in place by two metal pins, it will complement any natural garden environment and won’t look out of place in your home when in use. If you’re going to use it outside a lot, or even store it outside, then it makes sense to add a wood preserver, paint or stain. There is no outside cover available, but adding a treatment can protect it from rot and the fading effect of UV rays from the sun.

So, How Does It All Stack Up?

Whilst using a simple design, it was good to see that the timbers used were solid and well manufactured.

Thanks to its tough and sturdy feel, this should give long lasting performance. As it can be used outside, however, we feel that added value could have been provided by the inclusion of a preservative treatment. At this price, however, we can understand why this has been left to the customer.

With a pleasingly traditional design, you’ll be happy to have this on display in your garden, and we feel that its one metre height is optimal for most people’s purposes.

For a price of less than forty pounds, we feel that this represents very good value for money for a piece of equipment that should prove very durable and which is very versatile.

Overall Score
Final Thoughts: We feel that this one metre high saw horse makes the art of cutting logs down to size quicker and easier than ever before, so at this price it’s almost an essential purchase for all those who use logs in their home. We’ve seen people use lots of things to support logs that they’re sawing, from a workmate to the edge of a wall with one elbow propped on the log to support it. This creates a much more stable and reliable way to cut logs, which is of prime importance when using hand or power saws. We also liked how portable this saw horse is. Despite being strong and sturdy, it’s also lightweight so you can easily carry it in and out of your house or even place it in your car or van so that you can use it at the place where you’re sourcing your logs from.
