Review By:

This large dimensioned pent shed captures the classic look that has been enhancing UK gardens for decades, and yet it also takes advantage of modern technological advances such as toughened glass and planed all round cladding. The end result is a shed that looks great and is built to last. Whether you use it as a garden shed or a workshop, you’ll be proud to have it on your property.

The cladding itself locks so well together that it allows no room for water to penetrate into the interior. This function is also aided by the pitch of the pent roof which means that rain or snow isn’t allowed to settle on top. The end result is that the contents of this shed will be kept dry, whatever the weather outside. Security of another kind is also provided, in the shape of a strong and reliable key operated locking system.

One of the features we liked most about this shed are the six windows, which means that there is more than ample natural light inside. It was good to see that two of them opened, as this also means that ventilation is easy to regulate, an especially important feature on hot summer days or if machinery is being used.

Let's Take a Closer Look...

Shed Type, Roof Size

This large shed or workshop has a traditional pent roof styling that looks very attractive, and should complement any garden. Its sheer scale was the first thing that struck us. With a reasonably wide frontage being more than supported by a very generous depth. It was also good to see how high the shed was, and because there is a pent roof the eaves height was also tall rather than being compromised as we sometimes see on apex roofed sheds.

The pent roof itself is made of tongue and groove cladding, a feature that we always like to see in preference to more cost effective OSB material, and then covered in a tough mineral felt. It gives a ridge height of 2.74m and an eaves height of 1.85m. The overall width of the shed is 3.66m, and the overall depth is 6.10m, so it’s easy to see just how much storage space is available.

Cladding, Frame and Floor

It’s in the cladding and framing that we feel this shed performs particularly strongly. Tough and well manufactured tongue and groove cladding is used throughout, and whilst its thickness of 12mm is similar to that we see on many of the large sheds we review, on this occasion it is made from top of the range PAR cladding. The planed finish gives it extra strength and rigidity, and this is further helped by the heavy duty frame of 44 X 44mm.

Whilst we were glad to see that the same 12mm PAR tongue and groove cladding had been used for the floor, we were less happy to see that it came without floor joists. While a set of floor bearers are available as an optional extra, at the not insignificant price of £139.99, we feel they should have been included as standard given how important it is to raise a wooden floor above ground level.

Treatment Requirements and Warranty

Whilst a basic dip treatment of preservative has been provided by the manufacturer, at this price we would definitely have expected the much longer lasting and more effective pressure treatment to be used. This means that the owner themselves has to treat the shed within six weeks of installing it, and then every year after that. With a shed of this size, that can involve a lot of preservative and therefore a lot of time and money. It is also the underlying reason behind the manufacturer’s decision to only provide a basic one year warranty, which is much less generous than we expected.

Doors and Windows

Another area in which this shed could have been more user friendly is in its door. It was good to see that it was fully braced, and therefore relatively strong, and we have no complaints about its height of 1.88m, but the width of 0.76m means that it may be difficult to move wider objects or machinery in and out.

There are six windows, and the effect of these will be noticed from the moment you step inside. On a sunny day, the interior is bathed in light, which we feel is an essential quality if a building is to be used as a craft workshop. It was good to see that two of them are fully opening, as this is the easiest way to ventilate a shed and control the temperature inside.

Security Features

We welcome this shed’s inbuilt security features, one of which is the use of tough horticultural glass for the glazing. It’s much more shatter resistant than standard glass, which can be an important consideration if you’re likely to have young children playing near the shed. We also liked the inclusion of a key operated locking system. This is, in our opinion, the best way to secure a shed or workshop of this size, as just the sight of it can deter some potential intruders.

Optional Extras

There are lots of optional extras and customisation opportunities here, which is something we always welcome even if some of them could have been included as standard such as the aforementioned floor bearers and the option to upgrade to a double door at a cost of £56.99. This latter option, at least, we feel represents good value.

There is also the option to move the door to any one of three positions, which can in turn have an impact upon the window positioning. This means that you can create a shed that’s perfectly suited to your own individual garden. These options come at no extra cost, as does the option to have a fully boarded design with no windows at all. Taking advantage of this option allows the building to be used as a security shed.

We know that many people have very busy lives, and so finding time to assemble a shed of this size can be difficult. That’s why we were glad to see that a professional installation service is available, even though many people will find the £649.99 cost of this service to be prohibitive.

So, How Does It All Stack Up?
Quality 10/10
100% Complete
We found high quality components used throughout, from the PAR cladding, to the chamfered corners on the frame.
Longevity of Materials 7.5/10
75% Complete
The cladding itself should be very durable if treated regularly, but if treatments are missed it can soon become vulnerable to rot. The lack of floor bearers can also have a detrimental impact.
Storage Size 9.5/10
95% Complete
This is a very deep building, and thanks to a generous eaves height for a pent shed there is lots of vertical space too.
Ease of Installation 8/10
80% Complete
The sheer size means that it can take a long time to assemble this shed, although it was good to see that all fixtures and fittings were included. With a friend to help, allow at least seven hours but be prepared to take longer.
Value for Money 6/10
60% Complete
This is a well constructed and attractive shed, and yet it costs much more than many similar sheds we review, and there’s also the added expense of preservative treatments and the purchase of floor bearers to be factored in.
8
Overall Score
Final Thoughts: This shed has a lot to recommend it, but it also has areas in which it could have done a little better. Foremost among these is the rather expensive price tag, but if you have a budget that stretches to it, then this is still worth considering. Keep in mind that the floor bearers, listed as an optional extra, are really an essential purchase as it’s vital to elevate timber floors away from the threat posed by ground moisture. We were pleased, however, by the inclusion of a tough locking system and by the sheer size that’s available. We feel it would make a good workshop, particularly given the amount of light and air that the windows allow in.
