Dimensions and Design
When you think of a log store this is probably exactly what comes to mind. It’s a classic design featuring a rectangular box like shape with an open front. The sides and roof are all slatted, which is a very useful feature as it allows fresh air to circulate around the timbers stored within, thus ensuring that they dry out quickly and are in perfect condition when it comes time to use them.
We liked the mid size dimensions offered by this store, as it’s large enough to store a relatively large amount of logs or firewood and yet it’s lightweight and portable and doesn’t look unwieldy in a garden environment. The base width at 0.98m is slightly larger than the depth of the base at 0.76m, but the most generous dimension of all is its height. Featuring a pent style roof it has a ridge height of 1.26m and an eaves height of 1.04m.
Cladding and Floor
As log stores are designed to be kept outside throughout the year, it’s important they have a strong and reliable cladding. That’s why we were pleased to see that the timber featured on this log store was well machined and has a thickness of 16mm. Whilst the roof is also made of the same solid board cladding, however, it has a thickness of just 7mm and we would have liked to see this a little thicker.
The floor shares the same thick cladding as the walls, which was reassuring to see considering that it’s designed to support a large weight of logs. What we liked most about the floor was the fact that it’s supported upon four integrated floor joists that have been pressure treated. This itself helps with the store’s load bearing capacity but it also ensures that the base is raised above ground level, giving it extra protection against moisture and therefore rot.
Weather Protection and Durability
The pent roof features a pitch that can help to carry rain and snow away, but there is of course a slatted design which will potentially allow precipitation in. That’s why we would have liked to see a rain cover provided, or available as an optional extra, or even the option to have a solid roof without slats that would ensure that water was simply carried away.
Treatment Requirements and Warranty
We were pleased to see that the floor joists, always the most vulnerable area of a timber structure, but even more pleased to see that this had been replicated across the shed as a whole. Pressure treatment is much more effective than the dip treatment we would usually expect to see at this price range, and it creates timber that is very resistant to the development of wet rot.
This is the main reason that the manufacturer has been able to offer a 10 year warranty against rot, and while we have seen longer warranty periods on log stores we feel this still represents a generous warranty. One thing to note, however, is that the warranty is dependant upon the owner re-treating the log store themselves on a yearly basis, although a structure of this size shouldn’t need too much wood preserver expending upon it.
Uses and Versatility
Whilst the open face and slatted sides are designed to be ideal for the storage of logs, it means that it’s not so useful as a place to store paper or other recyclable or waste material. By adding a simple gate, however, this can be transformed into a general garden store and with a cover added as well it can then be used for this purpose all year round.
Despite its compact size, there had been no compromise on the quality of components used throughout this log store.
Longevity of Materials 9/10
The initial pressure treatment, allied to the thick cladding of the walls, should ensure a very durable structure, although it could have been even tougher with the use of a slightly thicker roof.
The relatively tall eaves height means that you can fit a surprisingly large amount of logs in here, so it’s suitable for most small to medium sized homes.
Ease of Installation 9.5/10
This is a very easy structure to assemble, so once you’ve read the instructions carefully you should be able to complete the installation in around two hours.
For a log store that’s well designed and built to last, we feel this represents good value for money.
Final Thoughts: We review a lot of log stores, and whilst many of them look quite similar they all have their own individual features and weaknesses. We found this to be a very tough and reliable structure, and we feel that it should outlast its 10 year anti-rot warranty as long as the treatment requirements are kept to, which shouldn’t be an onerous task. We would also recommend adding a wood stain to the log store or coating it with paint as this will prevent it silvering or fading in the sun. In this way, you’ll have a good looking log store for years to come, and one that performs a very useful function for anyone who uses a log fire or log burning stove.
