Dimensions and Design
This log store features a classic design in that it has an open front and a rectangular timber design with a slightly pitched pent roof. This is ideal for the storage of logs that need to be allowed to dry out, such as those that have been freshly cut or collected.
It’s not the largest log store that we’ve reviewed but thanks to its open front it’s easy to get logs in and out, and that means that you can fit more logs inside than you may initially think. The ridge height of the store is 1.29m, whilst at the front the height is 1.13m. The overall width of the log store is 1.16m and the overall depth is 0.64m, both of these being measured at the base, and therefore not including the overhang. Keep these dimensions in mind when choosing a place to site the structure; we feel that in the shadow of a house or shed would be ideal as this gives extra protection from rain.
Cladding and Floor
Even though this is a compact log store the cladding is still vitally important, as it’s this that gives it stability. That’s why we were pleased to see that 16mm slatted square board cladding had been used for the sides and the floor. It’s lightweight enough to make the assembly process easy, but once constructed the structure as a whole felt stable and solid.
It was good to see that the same thick cladding was used for the floor, rather than opting for the thinner 10mm thick cladding used on the roof, as it’s this that has to bear the weight of the logs. We were especially pleased to see that pressure treated floor bearers were also included as standard, as this means that the base is elevated above the ground level which can often have a high moisture content. This in turn can help in the fight against rot.
Weather Protection and Durability
The slatted nature of the substrate allows not only fresh air but also rain and snow to get inside, which is why we would have liked to see an all weather cover included. Such a cover can easily be bought or improvised however, and due to the small nature of this log store it can often be carefully positioned so that it’s given extra protection against the elements by surroundings such as walls.
Treatment Requirements and Warranty
The thing we liked most about this log store is that all of the timber has been given a pressure treatment with high quality wood preserver before it’s sent to the customer. This means that the preservative gets into the heart of the wood itself rather than sitting on the surface, and it’s therefore very long lasting. This is not necessarily something we expect to see at this price, and it means that there is no need for the customer to apply their own treatment in subsequent years. As with all wooden products, however, we would still advise inspecting it on an annual basis to see if any preserver is required, and it also makes sense to paint the timber to ensure that it gets protection from the potentially damaging effect of UV.
We were very impressed with the 15 year guarantee against rot provided by the manufacturer. Even though the cost of the unit isn’t too prohibitive, this still gives added value and added peace of mind to the customer.
Uses and Versatility
Most people will use this as a log store, and it performs very well for that intended purpose. We feel that it could also be used as a store for other items, however, such as recyclable materials and waste. With the addition of a front gate and a padlock it could even be used to store garden tools.
We were surprised to see such attention to detail being shown in a small log store, such as the provision of high quality pressure treated floor joists.
Longevity of Materials 9.5/10
Fifteen years is a long time for an affordable log store to last, and yet as the warranty period shows, the pressure treatment should ensure this is the case.
Even though it has a width of just four feet, its relatively generous height means that a good supply of logs can be kept within.
Ease of Installation 9.5/10
With instructions that are very easy to follow, and all the fixtures and fittings included, this can be installed in between one and two hours.
Larger log stores can be purchased for just a little more outlay, yet due to its durability we still feel this represents good value for not a lot of money.
Final Thoughts: We liked the look of this traditional log store, and we liked the price tag too, which is why we think it’s an ideal choice for a small family using a log burning stove or who occasionally use logs on an open fire. While looking very much timeless in its design it utilises the latest pressure treatment technology to ensure that the timbers are given long lasting protection against rot. We were pleased to see this, and especially pleased to see that this means that the manufacturer is confident enough to supply a 15 year guarantee against the appearance of rot. The only addition we would definitely recommend is two coats of paint, but other than that it can be set up and ready to use in as little as an hour.
