Review By:

This plastic shed can be an ideal, and relatively low cost, addition to your garden, and if you’ve only had timber or metal sheds before you’ll be impressed by just how convenient it is. Because it’s made of PVC vinyl it’s fire resistant, won’t rot, and won’t rust. That’s why it comes with a 15 year manufacturer’s guarantee, which gives real peace of mind as well as added value.

It’s certainly not one of the larger plastic sheds we’ve reviewed, but this makes it ideal for gardens where space is at a premium and there’s more than enough room to get a decent selection of tools inside, including taller items like rakes and hoes. Once inside it’s easy to find the item you want, thanks to the inclusion of a fixed window that allows natural light to fill the interior.

The assembly process is quick and easy, and once it’s up the structure as a whole is very strong and stable. That’s because underneath the PVC cladding itself is a galvanised metal frame. This means that there’s nothing to worry about, even if the shed is going to be situated in an area that can be exposed to strong winds.

Let's Take a Closer Look...

Shed Type, Roof Size

4' x 5'5 Duramax Woodside Plastic Shed Closed DoorThis apex roofed plastic storage shed is ideal for smaller gardens, as it has a compact footprint and yet can still store tall items and can also have shelving installed. Some people may have outdated notions about the appearance of plastic sheds, but we found this one to be quite attractive thanks to its contrasting colour scheme of almond white cladding with a brown door and roof. You certainly won’t be ashamed to have this in your garden.

The apex roof itself was the first thing that caught our eye, and not only because of the extra height it gives or the excellent way that it channels rainwater away. It features a slatted design that’s unlike any that we’ve seen on other sheds we review, and we feel that it’s very aesthetically pleasing. It also gives a ridge height of 1.90m and an eaves height of 1.70m which while less than many sheds we see should still be enough for most small scale storage purposes. The overall width of the building is 1.19m and the overall depth is 1.80m.

Cladding, Frame and Floor

One of the great advantages that a plastic shed has is its cladding, as it’s very durable and isn’t prone to rot or rust in the way that timber and metal is. PVC cladding is also fire resistant, which is good to know for people who may want somewhere to store flammable items. Sometimes however plastic cladding can feel a little flimsy, and it has to be said that with a thickness of 0.5mm this did feel very light. That’s why we were pleased to find that it has a hot dipped galvanised steel frame. It’s a very tough and rigid metal, which gives the shed stability once assembled.

The floor is also made of PVC vinyl, but we were glad to see that it was significantly thicker at 40mm. If you plan on storing anything that’s particularly heavy inside however you may want to reinforce it.

Treatment Requirements and Warranty

As with all PVC garden buildings there are no treatment requirements other than washing it occasionally to keep the threat of algae at bay. We were pleased that a 15 year warranty is offered however, as this shows the confidence that Duramax have in their product. We feel it’s unlikely to need to be used, but it’s reassuring to know that it’s there.

Doors and Windows

The door is an essential part of any storage facility, so whilst we liked the appearance of this single hinged door we were a little disappointed that it wasn’t taller. The width of 0.62m and height of 1.58m mean that it can take some manoeuvring to bring wide or tall objects in and out. One thing that we did like about the door is that it’s made of moulded PVC so it’s one piece construction gives it real strength.

We don’t always see a window included on plastic sheds of this size, so we were glad to see that one is included here as standard. It means that natural light reaches the interior, saving you the time and expense of having to install a light source.

Security Features

The toughness of the moulded door can itself be an aide to security, but to achieve this it will need to be backed up by a lock. It’s a pity therefore that no secure locking system is included as standard, although we were pleased to see that the handles are holed and so can easily accept a padlock and chain.

Optional Extras

There are no optional extras available to purchase directly with the shed, but as mentioned above we feel that adding a padlock is an essential requirement if you’re planning to store items of any value inside. This needn’t be an expensive purchase, although we would have liked to see it included as standard. We also feel that a shelving unit would make a very useful addition, although again this will need to be sourced and purchased separately by the customer.

Plastic is very durable, and so even though this cladding is quite thin it should still outlast its 15 year warranty.

This isn’t a shed for people who need a lot of storage space, although the addition of shelving units will help to make the most of the space that is available.

We recommend reading the instructions clearly, and with a friend’s help the assembly process can be completed in as little as two hours.

Thanks to the durability of the materials used, we feel this represents quite good value for money at just over three hundred pounds.

Final Thoughts: We know that there are a lot of keen gardeners out there who would like a storage shed for their tools and equipment but who don’t feel they have the space or money for one. This shed could make them think again. It’s relatively affordable, even with the additional purchase of a lock and chain, and it has a compact footprint while still being able to hold a good selection of items. Don’t let the fact that it’s plastic put you off either, we found it quite striking especially with its slatted roof that carries rainwater away. Once it’s assembled, which is itself an easy process, there’s no more treatment required, allowing you to relax and enjoy the benefits of your new garden building.
