Every garden needs a garden shed if the owner is going to get the best out of it, but sometimes there’s not a lot of room for a shed to be fitted in, or it could be that the garden owner simply doesn’t have a large budget with which to buy a garden building. This starter shed offers an ideal solution to both those scenarios. It offers great value for money and won’t take up a lot of garden space, and yet it’s surprising just how much can be fitted inside.

We liked this shed’s traditional and rustic appearance, based as it is upon overlap cladding and featuring a mineral felt clad apex roof. Both of these components are very good at keeping water out, so you won’t have to worry about your shed contents remaining dry. The effectiveness of this is shown by the very generous 10 year anti-rot warranty provided by the manufacturer, although this is dependent upon annual retreatment by the customer.

It’s worth noting that there are no windows on this shed, but we feel that this in itself can act as a useful deterrent against shed thieves. For extra security, a padlock will have to be sourced and added.

Let's Take a Closer Look...

Shed Type, Roof Size

5' x 3' Shed-Plus Starter Shed Front ViewThis is a small scale garden storage shed, but it’s still well put together and attractively formed. Based upon the traditional apex sheds with overlapping cladding that have been seen in UK gardens for decades, this looks more expensive than it actually is, so you’ll never feel ashamed to have it in your garden.

At its summit is an apex roof made of OSB covered in a strong black mineral felt. It’s very effective at channeling water away, so this makes it the shed’s first line of defence against rot. It also adds a little height, creating a ridge height of 1.95m, which is as generous as some sheds we review that are much more costly, and an eaves height of 1.57m. The overall width of the shed is 1.62m and the overall depth is 0.94m. These aren’t the largest dimensions, but mean that it can fit perfectly into many smaller gardens.

Cladding, Frame and Floor

Whilst the overlapping cladding is effective at carrying water away, at 5mm thick it’s significantly thinner than that which we see on many of the sheds we review. That said, thanks to its compact size and standard frame, it feels solid and stable when assembled.

Whilst the walls are constructed of overlap cladding, both the roof and the floor are made of Oriented Strand Board which is a variety of engineered wood. This is a cost effective option that we would expect in a shed in this price bracket, and it should be tough enough for everyday storage purposes.

Treatment Requirements and Warranty

Protecting timbers from rain is essential in its infancy, as this is when it’s most vulnerable to the water penetration that can cause rot. That’s why we were pleased to see that all the timbers had been given a dip treatment with preservative. This is again a basic and cost effective option, but it does give some protection. In conjunction with the overlap cladding and apex roof, both of which help to carry water harmlessly away, it’s also the basis for a 10 year warranty against rot, which we feel is a very generous offering for a shed at this price. The warranty is dependent upon an annual treatment with wood preserver being carried out, but with a shed of this size that’s not going to be a time consuming or expensive task.

Doors and Windows

The single hinged door at the front of this shed is braced, and feels reassuringly strong. It has a width of 0.66m and a height of 1.59m. Whilst these are not overly accommodating it’s still possible to take most standard tools and gardening equipment in and out without any problems. With the door height equating to five foot, however, most people will have to stoop down when going through the door as well as when inside the shed itself. It’s also worth having a torch hanging inside the shed, as there are no windows to bring in natural light.

Security Features

We appreciated the fact that there are no windows, as this means that passers by won’t be able to tell if anything of value, or indeed anything at all, is kept inside this shed. Shed crime is perceived to be on the rise, and opportune thieves are looking for easy targets that will bring a guaranteed return, so this window free design can act as an effective deterrent against them. The best deterrent of all would be a padlock, but unfortunately this isn’t included although we were glad to see that the button turn latch on the door can accept a padlock.

Optional Extras

As befits a budget priced starter shed, there are no optional extras available to buy at the point of purchase, but there are still two items that we would recommend purchasing separately. The first is a padlock, as mentioned above, and this certainly doesn’t have to be an expensive purchase. The second item we would recommend is an outdoor paint or stain. If left unpainted, the timber can soon take on a silver or grey colour, but the use of paint or woodstain will prevent this as well as allowing the owner to customise the shed in a shade of their choice.

Final Thoughts: There are many people that we feel would benefit from having this shed; for example, it would be ideal for a young couple who have made into their first house or who have just had a new garden laid. Having a small and compact garden doesn’t mean that you have to forego having a storage space any more, because this small and compact garden shed is available at a very affordable price. With the addition of a padlock it can also be used as a security shed, which can be bought for ten pounds or even less, thanks to its useful window free design.
