Shed Type, Roof Size
We liked the look of this apex roofed storage shed with a compact footprint, and it means that people who want a small yet useful storage facility in their garden can also have a building that’s attractive and that can become a feature in its own right. That’s thanks to the amber colour added to the polycarbonate panels, which we think is a neat touch.
An apex roof is always a feature that we always like to see, as they are highly effective at carrying rain or snow away, while at the same time adding more height. This roof achieved both of these functions, giving a ridge height of 2.15m and an eaves height of 1.75m. You’ll be surprised at just how much can be stored inside, despite the base width of 1.70m and the base depth of 0.84m, not including the overhang.
Cladding, Frame and Floor
We were impressed by just how tough the polycarbonate cladding was, and when assembled it creates a surprisingly strong and sturdy building. One reason for this stability is that it’s allied to a galvanised metal frame. This is a very durable substrate, and one that’s very resistant to rain and therefore rust. The floor too is made of polycarbonate, but we were pleased to see that a special non slip variety had been used as this could prove especially useful in winter or in times of heavy rain.
Treatment Requirements and Warranty
We were glad to see that a 10 year warranty has been provided by the manufacturer, as this not only gives peace of mind to the purchaser it also shows that the manufacturer themselves have confidence in the toughness and durability of their product. As the two main constituents used in this shed are aluminium and plastic there’s also no need for future treatments to be applied by the customer. Over this ten year period and beyond this can lead to a substantial saving of both time and money.
Doors and Windows
Because the shed is relatively wide compared to its depth, the double doors have no need to be compromised. We were pleased at their opening width of 1.28m, even though we are used to seeing doors that are taller than the 1.71m we found here, as this means that objects of just about any width can be manoeuvred inside easily. For objects with wheels this task is made easier thanks to the pull out ramp that hides away when not in use. This also means, of course, that a wheelbarrow can be used to bring in particularly heavy items.
One of the features we found most useful about this shed is the integrated skylight on the roof. The translucent polycarbonate panel allows lots of light to reach the interior, and thanks to the ventilation panels there is also lots of fresh air circulating too. This means that whilst space is limited in the interior, it feels comfortable and welcoming.
Because natural light is provided by a skylight, rather than by a window, this means that the contents of the shed are kept completely hidden from passers by. We think this is an important addition to the overall security of the building, and we were pleased to see that the double doors can be fixed in position via a padbolt that can also accept a padlock.
We’ve all heard tales of how prevalent shed crime is, which is why padlocks really are essential however large the shed that they are to be used on is. That’s why we were a little disappointed to see that a padlock wasn’t included as standard, but instead is left to the customer to purchase. We highly recommend therefore that a padlock is bought at the same time as the shed, and while this needn’t be an expensive purchase it will have to be sourced separately rather than being bought in tandem with this building.
We welcomed the use of non slip polycarbonate sheeting for the floor not only for health and safety reasons, but also as an indicator of the manufacturer’s attention to detail and quality.
Longevity of Materials
Both the polycarbonate cladding itself and the galvanised metal frame are very durable materials, and this is backed up by the inclusion of a 10 year warranty.
This is very much a compact shed, although we were pleased to see that lots of vertical storage space is available.
Ease of Installation
The easy assembly system makes it possible for anyone to complete the installation in around an hour or so especially with a friend’s assistance. The panels simply slide into place and then click into a locked position.
Whilst this is both tough and well made, we have reviewed larger metal and plastic sheds that are available for less money.
Final Thoughts: Whilst its compact nature means that this storage shed from Palram is likely to be used mainly for the storage and quick retrieval of tools and equipment, we liked the way that the integrated skylight ensures that the interior is bright and illuminated. The vents are very useful too, as they can help to prevent the buildup of condensation which polycarbonate sheds can otherwise be prone to. With the purchase of a padlock, which can easily be bought for less than twenty pounds, this can become a very secure shed, so you won’t have any worries about keeping items of value inside.
