Shed Type, Roof Size
We liked the fact that while this corrugated metal apex shed has a stylishly contemporary look, thanks to its silver colouring, it isn’t afraid to take inspiration from the classic design of wooden garden sheds. One feature that it successfully borrows is the apex roof. This is just as important with metal sheds as it is with timber sheds, as it stops water sitting on the surface and potentially causing rust.
At its ridge height the shed is 1.89m tall and it has an eaves height of 1.63m. This shows how pronounced the apex is, and we could feel the benefit of the improved headroom once we were inside. The shed also features an overall width of 2.02m and an overall depth of 1.37m. You’ll need to keep these dimensions in mind as they determine the area of level concrete that you’ll need to erect this shed upon.
Cladding Frame and Floor
While we found the cladding lightweight to handle during installation, once constructed it was pleasingly solid and stable. That’s largely because of the galvanisation process that the steel has gone through during the manufacturing process, giving it a strength that belies its thickness of 0.35mm.
There is no floor supplied as standard, as the shed is designed to be fitted directly onto a concrete surface. Because of its relatively compact footprint you may already have a patio area that will suffice for this purpose, otherwise concrete will need to be laid for this purpose. We were pleased to see that a free anchor kit was provided as standard, including rust free expansion screws, as this saves further expense and speeds up the installation process. It’s a feature that you wouldn’t necessarily expect to see included with a shed in this price range.
Treatment Requirement And Warranty
We’re not surprised to see that Yardmaster provide a 10 year no rust guarantee with this shed, although it’s very welcome all the same. The combination of an apex roof and galvanised steel cladding is excellent at preventing ingress of water, and all the pieces fitted together perfectly leaving no room for rain to seep in. There is no further treatment required by the owner, other than hosing or washing the shed from time to time.
Doors and Windows
We liked the fact that the double sliding doors on this shed are situated internally. This helps to protect them from the effects of storms and also makes them more secure when fitted with a padlock. The doors have been created with a padlock in mind, although none is supplied, so this should be the first purchase after the shed itself.
The double nature of the doors creates an overall width of 0.79m, and the doors have a height of 1.58m. We found that we had to bend down to get through the doors, but once inside the apex roof gives more than adequate standing room. There are no windows in this shed, but this is a design feature often found on metal storage sheds.
Security and Privacy
Shed security is an increasingly important consideration in today’s world, and this shed had both advantages and disadvantages in this area. The lack of a padlock or lock and key system was disappointing, though understandable at this price, but an alarm and padlock kit needn’t be an expensive acquisition. On the plus side, the window free walls aid both security and privacy, so you won’t have to worry about people seeing what equipment is stored inside.
Customisation Options and Extras
Due to the nature of the toughened steel cladding, there is no option to affix shelving directly to the structure itself. That’s why we are pleased to see that a resin shelving storage unit is available to buy with this shed. Measuring 2’6 by 1’8 and featuring four levels, they greatly enhance the ability to store small tools safely and in an organised manner.
Another useful option is the Tool-Plus tool rack. This portable tool rack is on wheels, so it can easily be transported in and out of the accommodating double doors found on this shed.
Galvanised steel is not only used for the walls and roof of this shed, it’s also used for the fixtures and fittings that are included. It’s a welcome touch that shows Yardmaster’s commitment to quality.
Longevity Of materials 9/10
Ten years without rust is guaranteed by the manufacturer, and depending upon how exposed the shed is to the weather it could last longer than that.
We would have liked the doorway, and the shed itself, to be a little taller but this mid sized shed can still store a large amount of garden tools and equipment.
Ease of installation 8.5/10
We found the shed easy to install, taking two of us less than three hours. You may want to allow for a little extra time however, as the instructions contain directions for two different sizes of sheds. This can be a little confusing at first, so read through them well before commencing the job.
This is very reasonably priced for a 6’ X 4’ metal shed, although we would recommend spending a little extra to add a padlock and alarm system as well.
Final Thoughts: Protecting your gardening equipment from the weather in a secure environment doesn’t have to be expensive, as this metal utility shed shows. The apex design creates a little extra room for manoeuvre, and helps to ensure that the interior remains dry. The exterior is also well looked after, thanks to the galvanised steel components which are covered by a 10 year no rust guarantee. One other thing we liked about this shed is that there are two colour schemes available, all silver as in the one we reviewed which gives a nicely modern look, and green which allows the shed to blend in with its garden surroundings.
