Shed Type, Roof Size
This metal storage shed features a pent roof and a Zincalume finish. This gives a resulting silvery grey finish which we felt looked very futuristic, and will complement homes that have embraced the stylish minimalist look. It also has a very tough appearance, belying its lightweight easy to construct nature.
The pent roof follows a classic shed design and helps to ensure that water is carried away before it can settle, extending the durability of the cladding. It also adds a little more headroom, although this is already an area where the shed performs very well. The ridge height is 2.06m and the eaves height is 1.80m. When finding a suitable level area on which to base the shed you’ll also need to take account of the outer dimensions, which are a width of 2.25m on the door side, and a depth of 1.52m.
Cladding, Frame and Floor
One of the reasons that Abso is becoming a successful name in shed manufacture worldwide is that they are noted for the strength and durability of their products. This is demonstrated by the ribbed style cladding. We were surprised at how light it felt when we were assembling it, but then we were just as surprised at how strong and stable it felt when fully constructed. This is partly due to the high quality galvanisation used on the cladding, but it’s also because of how well the interlocking sheets snap together using the unique SNAPTiTE assembly system.
There is no floor supplied with this shed, which is as we expected, but we feel it would have added even more value if there had been options to add a timber floor, or if a foundation kit was available for people who don’t currently have a suitable area of level concrete or patio.
Treatment Requirements and Warranty
We were very impressed with the 20 year warranty provided against the occurrence of perforations resulting from rust. We have no doubt that the galvanised cladding will resists rust for at least this length of time, but the warranty shows the confidence that Absco have in their product, and it should also provide peace of mind to the owner. There are, of course, no treatment requirements other than cleaning the surface from time to time.
Doors and Windows
We review many metal sheds that don’t have windows, such as this one, but their absence is rarely as noticeable as here. The unbroken expanse of silver gives a very muscular appearance to the building, but that can be a useful security feature.
We really liked the single hinged door on this shed, because it was braced and felt very strong in operation. It’s also tall, at just a little under 6 feet in height, and with a width of 0.75m it’s wider than most single and even some double doors that we see. It was a real relief to be able to walk in and out of the door unhindered without having to worry about bumping our heads.
Security and Privacy
As mentioned above, we think that the window free design, as well as the appearance as a whole, can act as a real deterrent to opportune thieves. It also provides added privacy, which is a trait that many people welcome. A padlock would add an extra element of protection, but unfortunately there isn’t one included as standard. There is,however, provision to add a padlock and we’d highly recommend that this is done.
Customisation Options and Extras
With its tall eaves, it makes sense to make as much use as possible of the vertical storage space that’s available. That’s why we were pleased to see that a four shelf unit is available as an optional extra. Measuring 2’6 X 1’8 it’s resin coated and can hold a wide variety of small or medium sized tools. Despite being portable and stand alone, it’s reassuringly sturdy and can clear floor space for other items. As well as the shelving unit, there’s also the option to add a wheeled tool kit, a wheelbarrow, and a water station at the time you purchase the shed.
From the immaculate appearance of the Zincalume finish, to the perfect fitting of the SNAPTiTE components, this had the hallmark of quality throughout.
Longevity Of materials
This shed has been designed with longevity and durability in mind. Despite the relatively thin cladding, the galvanisation means that it could last for even longer than the 20 year warranty period without rust perforations appearing.
While the base of this shed is firmly in the mid size category, we were impressed by the height it offered, especially for a pent shed. This greatly increases its storage versatility.
Ease of installation
We strongly recommend you read the assembly instructions thoroughly, as the installation system is sure to be unlike those you’ll have used before. Once we got used to the system, however, it was easy to use and assembly took around three hours.
With a high quality finish allied to a long warranty period and more than adequate storage space for a small garden, this is a good value purchase.
Final Thoughts: You may not have heard of Absco before, but they’re the biggest name in domestic sheds in Australia. Having heard of their excellent reputation for quality and value, we were pleased to see that they have now started retailing sheds in the United Kingdom. We weren’t disappointed with what we found, as this no nonsense tough looking metal shed delivers on storage space, weather protection, ease of assembly, and durability. Adding a shelving unit or two, which we recommend, will add considerably to your initial outlay, but it still represents good value for money, making it a smart choice for small to medium sized gardens.
