This is a lightweight garden storage shed and it is part of the great Shed-Plus range. One of the more premium buildings within the collection, it does boast some unique benefits. However, like many sheds it does come with a solid sheet floor. This restricts what the building can be used for. Its size would usually make it ideal as a small workshop. However, we wouldn’t advise using it to work in as the floor simply won’t hold heavy machinery.
- Front height – 6’10”
- Rear height – 6’3”
- Door height – 5’6”
- Door width – 2’2”
- Depth including overhang – 6’4”
- Width including overhang – 8’0”
Most of the measurements on this shed are pretty standard. However, as you can see the width is pretty impressive. Pent sheds do tend to come in wider designs and this is one of the larger ones. You’ll also note that the front is taller than the back. This is down to the pent roof sloping downwards at the rear of the building. Although compared to many of its competitors, it still remains taller, giving you plenty of interior height.
Roof and Floor
One thing pent roofs are notorious for is being suitable for placing in front of or underneath buildings and trees. Their space saving quality makes them a popular choice. However, this one is taller than the average pent shed, which means you still benefit from a lot of height inside the building, just like you do with an apex roof. We like that you get the best of both worlds with this shed.
OSB materials are used for the roof and floor. Whilst this isn’t really much of a problem with the roof, it does mean the floor isn’t as sturdy as it could be. The roofs material measures 8mm, while the floors material measures 10mm. It is possible to install roof joists if you feel it does require some extra support. However, it will be more difficult to improve the floor’s strength. Shed Store doesn’t provide an upgrade option so it is something you will need to do yourself.
Cladding and Treatment Requirements
This shed uses very good quality featheredge timber to provide a reliable structure, as well as a rustic look. It is worth noting that featheredge is a type of overlap style cladding and out of the various types used, it is the cheapest and therefore the less reliable. The way that the panels are cut actually saves materials which is why it is a popular choice for some manufacturers. It also explains the very low cost of the shed compared to similar size models on the market.
As it is the weakest out of the various cladding styles, it does require higher quality treatments. However, unlike a lot of overlap clad sheds, this one comes with a dip treatment applied before delivery. This basically means you won’t need to treat the building for the first year. You will however need to treat it every year after that to make sure it is adequately protected against harsh weather. A full 10 year guarantee is provided which covers against rot and fungus.
Doors and Windows
A single door is situated on the front of the shed, next to two windows. It has been hinged and we particularly like that black hinges have been used rather than natural grey metal ones. This gives it a more attractive style, whilst also providing great stability. It isn’t braced so sagging could be a problem if you use it a lot throughout the year. The windows supplied are fixed and filled with 1.5mm styrene glazing. So they won’t offer ventilation, but as they are front facing they will offer plenty of natural lighting.
Security and Privacy
Budget sheds don’t tend to focus on security and privacy and this one is no different. It doesn’t come with a lock and as the featheredge cladding is so weak, you cannot cover the windows with anything. So if you do live in an area prone to crime, we would suggest investing in very good security such as an alarm system and a padlock.
Customisation Options and Extras
The extras and customisation options offered are the same as what Shed Store offer with the majority of their budget sheds. There’s a choice of two colour treatments, a wooden base, a solar light and two security alarm options. Out of these, the wooden base is one of the most beneficial.
All sheds need to be built on a sturdy base, but it’s particularly important for cheaper sheds to have as much stability as possible. This wooden DIY shed base kit comes with spikes which secure down into the ground. So not only is your shed anchored to the base, but the base is also secured to the floor. This provides maximum stability and will protect the shed from ground moisture too.
The alarm security options are also worth buying if you live in a vulnerable area. A hasp and staple is secured to the door to stop it randomly opening, but a padlock will help protect it from theft. These are no ordinary padlocks however. The alarm padlock will emit a high pitched alarm if somebody tries to break in without the key.
Constructed from featheredge overlap cladding, this shed is slightly weaker than the majority of competitor sheds on the market. Featheredge is actually the lowest quality overlap used by manufacturers. Whilst this lowers the cost of the building, it also lowers the quality. It is still a reliable shed as long as you treat it adequately.
Longevity Of materials 8/10
In order to make sure the shed lasts a good amount of time, you will need to be vigorous with treatment re-applications. Treat the shed as soon as it has been assembled and then annually. We also recommend using a spirit treatment to provide a deeper protective layer.
It isn’t possible to add hooks, shelving or heavy storage units into this shed. Despite that, you are given a good amount of interior storage space.
Ease of installation 8/10
Assembly is straightforward and shouldn’t pose any issues. Shed Store provide pretty good instructions to follow and it is advised that only two people attempt the installation.
This is one of the more affordable sheds included in the Shed-Plus range and it does give you great value for money.
Final Thoughts: This premium quality shed comes without the premium quality price tag. This is largely due to the overlap cladding it is manufactured from. It has a few noteworthy features including two styrene glazed windows, a hasp and staple and secure hinged doors. The timber has also been dip treated which means annual treatments aren’t necessary. This is a fantastic benefit that you don’t often come across with overlap sheds. So if you simply want a lightweight storage facility that you don’t have to spend time maintaining, this would be a good choice. It even boasts a 10 year anti rot and fungal guarantee.
