This is a mid-sized overlap storage shed with a lesser common pent roof design. It provides ample storage space for gardening tools and equipment such as wheelbarrows, spades, rakes and compost. Whilst some similar sized buildings would also make a great small workshop, we wouldn’t recommend using this model to work in. It would require a lot of additional upgrades; particularly the floor. The money you would have to spend to get it suitable for use as a workspace would be better spent on buying an actual workshop. However, if you’re just looking for a simple storage facility, this is definitely a great shed to opt for.
- Roof height – 1.95m
- Eaves height – 1.70m
- Door height – 1.68m
- Door width – 0.75m
- Depth – 1.80m
- Width – 2.38m
This is a fairly common sized shed, with no real outstanding differences compared to other 8×6 buildings. The only thing that’s slightly different is the roof height. A lot of sheds these days tend to come with an apex roof which is taller. However, whilst it may be slightly shorter, it still provides more than enough height to comfortably enter the building. It is also higher at the front than it is at the back. This is to accommodate the flat, sloping roof.
Roof and Floor
To keep costs to a minimum, the manufacturer has constructed this shed with solid sheet materials for the floor and roof. The roof’s board is a little thinner than the floor, measuring 8mm thick. It does offer a good amount of stability, but we’d recommend adding a few roof joists just to make it that little bit tougher. We do like that it is covered with sand felt. This is a heavy duty roofing felt that will help to protect it against potential damp related problems. Whilst it does claim to be a heavy duty material, you do get the feeling it won’t last for many years due to its flimsy design. So it could be worth investing in a better quality felt for peace of mind.
The floor’s solid sheet board measures 10mm thick. Again, like the board on the roof, it does have a flimsy look and feel. It is mainly suitable for lightweight storage, though could accommodate medium weight equipment at a push. That’s why we’re pleased to see Walton’s provide you with a free support kit. Measuring 28mm, this support kit can give you more reassurance and help to boost the strength of the structure. You may find this adequate enough, but if not, there’s an extra strength support pack available for maximum peace of mind.
One thing we do like is that the shed comes with bearers. Just like the standard frame, these measure 28mmx28mm and they lift the building off the ground. This helps to add ventilation, as well as eliminate any damp related issues which could crop up if the ground is wet.
Cladding and Frame
All of the value sheds in the Walton’s collection are made from 8mm overlap. In the manufacturing industry this is often used because it is easier to work with, as well as being cheaper than Shiplap or tongue and groove. Of course, this does mean it isn’t as strong as other cladding types. So more maintenance will be required to ensure it lasts.
You can instantly tell an overlap shed apart because of its unique, rough design. The panels of the shed are built over the top of one another, very similar to fence panels. They don’t tend to have the smooth, planed look that stronger cladding has. This means you are more at risk of getting splinters. However, just because it is cheaper and weaker, doesn’t mean it doesn’t provide a good level of weather protection. Provided it is well maintained, your storage will stay dry and safe all year round. The only problem you need to watch out for is warping. Overlap is prone to warping, especially if it is placed in an area with a lot of strong, direct sunlight. So ideally you should built it in the shadiest part of the garden.
It’s unsurprising to see 28mmx28mm framing. This is the standard frame that Walton’s tend to use with most of their outdoor buildings. It provides excellent support and keeps the shed standing tall and strong.
Treatment Requirements and Warranty
Annual treatments are extremely important with overlap buildings. The 8mm cladding isn’t as naturally defensive against rainwater and harsh winds as other styles of cladding. It doesn’t matter which type of treatment you choose, it will still need to be reapplied every single year. If you’re wanting to benefit from the 10 year anti-rot warranty Walton’s supply with this building, you’ll need to use a spirit treatment.
Initially, Spirit treatments are more expensive than water treatments. However, they provide much more effective water resistance. When you’re dealing with overlap cladding, it’s important to make sure it has as much protection as possible against the elements. The spirit based treatment penetrates into the timber and protects it from the inside out. Water treatments are effective, but they do only provide a surface barrier.
Now a lot of people choose spirit treatments because they are known to give a building longer lasting protection. It’s important to note that you will need to treat the shed every year. You can get away with less regular treatments on Shiplap clad sheds, but not overlap. If you don’t keep up with the treatments, you won’t be protected by the 10 year anti-rot guarantee.
This shed comes with a free resin enriched Golden Brown water treatment. You can use this on top of a spirit based treatment to provide a more stylish finish and to increase its weatherproof protection.
Doors and Windows
One single door and one styrene glazed window are included with the shed. The door is constructed with a ledge design, allowing you to easily attach a hasp and staple. It also gives the door a stronger style, though it isn’t braced so this is something you should be aware of. Bracing helps to prevent the door from sagging so we would recommend adding your own bracing to boost its stability. We do like that Waltons have included a pad bolt rather than a butterfly catch. Usually on cheaper sheds, a butterfly catch is used to keep the doors secure. The pad bolt is much stronger and much more effective.
The styrene window is fixed, meaning you won’t be able to open it. It is there purely for decorative and practical purposes. Allowing natural light to enter the building, it makes it easier to see what you’re looking for in daylight hours. Both the door and the window are located on the front of the shed.
Security and Privacy
We tend to find the more value sheds don’t offer much in terms of security. However, this one is a little more secure than most. The strong pad bolt may not lock the building completely, but it does let you add a padlock to keep the building secure. Besides that, the cladding isn’t very thick, but it still provides a good level of thief protection.
The addition of a window means this isn’t the most private shed available. It would also be difficult to add a blind as the cladding isn’t really thick enough to hold one. The fact it is fixed does add to the shed’s security however as it doesn’t provide an opportunity for a thief to get inside. If you are concerned about the privacy, we’d recommend covering up anything that might be worth stealing.
The most useful customisation option available is the coloured treatments. Whilst they are water based, each of the brands offered by Waltons are created to a very high standard. They also come in a good range of different colours. As a free Golden Brown coloured treatment is included in the shed’s purchase, you don’t need to buy an additional treatment if you don’t want to. However, it is worth looking at the different colours on offer to see whether you’d prefer to give the building a different finish.
Included with the shed is a heavy duty mineral felt. However, as mentioned earlier this does look and feel a little on the flimsy side. It will likely supply a great level of protection for about a year. After that, you get the feeling it will start to perish. That’s why we recommend upgrading to the superior duty felt. This great fibreglass felt is self-adhesive and you can see it has a thick, waterproof design. You can also choose from the standard charcoal colour, or be a little different and go for the olive green option. However, due to the flatness of the pent roof, the felt won’t really be seen so it doesn’t really matter which colour you do go for.
An extra floor support pack measuring up to 8ft is also available. Walton’s provide a slightly thinner support pack for free with the building do you might not need to upgrade further. However, we would recommend it if you’re going to be storing items such as heavy boxes, bags of compost or a lawnmower. The solid sheet materials the shed comes with definitely aren’t strong enough to support a lot of weight. However, if you’re only going to be using the shed for lightweight storage, the free standard 28mm support pack may be enough.
The Pro Shed Base is the main extra we’d recommend. If you don’t already know, it is really important to build the shed on top of an even, solid surface. If you don’t have a flat concrete area to erect the shed, this base is a fantastic alternative. It lifts the floor of the shed off the ground, helping with ventilation. What we really like about this particular base is that it has been made from 100% recycled plastic. So it doesn’t just provide a high quality, thick and long lasting design – it is also better for the environment. It also comes with a weed proof membrane which should be placed down before the actual plastic base. It is worth noting that if you do buy this base, it will be delivered separately from the main shed.
The walls of the overlap shed aren’t strong enough to hold interior shelving. However the good news is Walton’s do offer an alternative. They offer shelving sets measuring from 3-5ft which stand on the shed’s floor. Constructed out of 16mm tongue and groove timber, they are some of the strongest shelves on the market and they can hold a lot of weight. However, before considering buying these sets you would need to strengthen the floor of the building. Most of the sets have two tiers, but there’s a 4ft option that provides three tiers. So no matter how much additional storage you have, there is a shelving set to suit your needs.
The 49mm weatherproof padlock with hasp and staple is the final extra we’d recommend. This sturdy little lock will easily install onto the shed’s existing pad bolt. Adding extra security to the building is important due to the weaker overlap clad design. This particular padlock is to us, one of the best available. It comes with so many great features such as a steel laminated body, double locking, protective cover over the keyhole and a Thermoplastic weatherproof jacket.
This is part of the manufacturer’s value range, so its quality isn’t going to match that of the slightly more expensive buildings. However, considering the very low cost, you are still provided with a great quality shed.
Longevity Of materials 7/10
As it is sold, the materials used on the shed are great quality, but they don’t have the best durability. The overlap cladding should last 10 years minimum provided you treat it every year. However, the roofing felt is likely to perish quickly after a year and the floor also isn’t overly strong so that could be an issue too. There are customisation options and extras that can help to improve its durability so you may want to look in to these.
Unlike tongue and groove or Shiplap sheds, overlap models don’t allow you to attach shelves to the inside walls. They won’t hold the weight so this somewhat limits the amount of space available. However, there are standalone shelving kits available at an additional cost which can solve this problem. It’s a medium size building and it does offer a good amount of space.
Ease of installation 8/10
This shed is pretty quick to assemble and the instructions provided are fantastic. It should take no more than a few hours to put together. However, one thing we would recommend is using an electric screwdriver. This will make it easier and also speed up the assembly.
If you only have lightweight storage, this shed offers exceptional value for money. However, if your storage is likely going to be quite heavy, we would recommend at least upgrading the floor. Even with the additional cost of upgrading and the annual treatments, the shed still offers great value for money.
Final Thoughts: Although this 8x6 storage shed has a very basic design, we feel it offers incredible value for money. It’s ideal for those just looking for a simple, straightforward storage area. Compared to a lot of other value sheds, this one does offer some unique, outstanding features. The pad bolt is a good example, along with the fixed styrene glazed window. The fact it is easy to assemble is a definite advantage, though we would recommend investing in the Pro Shed Base. Its pent roof design is another beneficial feature, providing extremely good water resistance and also making it great for gardens with various height restrictions.
