Shed Type and Roof Size
This is one of Waltons most popular storage sheds and it isn’t hard to see why. Complete with a practical yet stylish apex roof, it benefits from an extremely strong, weatherproof design. Apex roofs are renowned for providing ultimate protection against the elements. Helping to direct the water diagonally down and off the building, you won’t need to worry about any water build up. It has also been covered with a very high quality, heavy duty mineral felt. So water is also prevented from soaking into the timber.
Another benefit that is often overlooked is the fact that apex roofs also provide more interior height. This makes it both comfortable and practical for storing taller equipment and tools. It is created with 8mm solid sheet board.
The eaves measure up to 1.56m in height and the roof is 1.98m. So this gives you a good idea of the amount of space you can expect. In width it measures 1.75m and in depth it measures 2.38m. Its large single door measures 0.87m wide and 1.66m high.
Cladding, Frame and Floor
This mid-size shed benefits from supreme quality 12mm Shiplap tongue and groove cladding. Out of the three different types of cladding, this is by far the most superior. It offers a thick, sturdy construction that is both a thief deterrent and an excellent weather resistant shed. What makes Shiplap cladding stand out from other types is the small channel running centrally across each panel. This is used as a water-resistant feature, literally draining the water away from the timber.
Often found on high-end sheds, Shiplap is also resistant to warping. So no matter where you assemble the shed, you can be sure it will withstand the elements. It boasts a strong 28mm x 28mm frame and for ultimate stability, the corners have been double framed.
It’s slightly disappointing that the tongue and groove construction isn’t followed through to the floor of the building. Instead it is created with 10mm solid sheet boards. However, as an extra benefit, Waltons do provide a free floor support pack, boosting its strength to 28mm. You should find this is more than enough to hold anything you decide to store. However, large heavy boxes and heavy gardening equipment such as lawnmowers, would benefit more from the extra strength support pack.
Treatment Requirements and Warranty
We agree with Waltons that the shed should be treated before or shortly after construction with a spirit based treatment. The manufacturer has given the timber a water dipped treatment before it is shipped, however this isn’t going to provide protection after transit. Spirit treatments are more expensive, but they are also more effective too. The only issue you may have is the fact that they don’t come in many colour variations. So if the unpainted design is an issue for you, you would need to invest in a water based treatment which can be used after you have applied the spirit treatment. So why use both and not just a water one if colour is what you’re aiming for? Well the 10 year anti-rot warranty you are provided with only applies if you use a spirit based treatment. So it’s very important you follow these instructions and use a coloured water treatment afterwards if preferred.
In terms of re-application, some spirit treatments don’t actually need to be applied every single year. Be sure to read the instructions to see whether this applies to the treatment you invest in. It is worth pointing out Waltons supply a free 5l Golden Brown treatment with the shed. This is a water based treatment and it benefits from a fade resistant, quick drying and low odour design.
Doors and Windows
One of the most unique aspects of this shed is the large single door. It has a much wider design than most single doors you find on wooden storage sheds. This ensures you have excellent, spacious entry into the building. It also has a ledge design which lets you install a hasp and staple if required. It also gives great stability to the door, providing a heavier and stronger design.
Windows are supplied with this building and they are glazed with 2.5mm styrene. This is a common replacement for glass and it is used for its shatterproof feature. There are two windows in total and what’s really impressive is that you can choose which side to build them on.
Security and Privacy
Both the security and privacy of this shed could be improved upon. However, the strong, thick cladding and the styrene glazed windows do provide some security. Both are tough to break through so this does act as a pretty good thief deterrent. However, the door is only fitted with a turn button lock. Now for those unfamiliar with the different lock types out there, its name can be incredibly deceiving. It isn’t actually a lock. You’ll often see it more commonly advertised as a ‘Butterfly Catch’ and it is designed to basically keep the doors tightly closed, even in high winds. So if you need to keep the shed actually locked, you will need to invest in a separate lock. Though the good news is these aren’t very expensive so it won’t boost the cost up that much.
Privacy also isn’t something that you naturally get with this shed. The two windows will allow people to peer in and see the contents of the building. Of course, you could choose to install blinds or curtains if this is an issue for you. If not we highly recommend you store any expensive equipment out of view.
Customisation Options and Extras
We’re impressed with the amount of extras you have available with this building. Two of the most common upgrades available by the manufacturer include the superior duty felt and the extra strength floor support pack. Now most people find that the heavy duty sand felt provided with the shed is strong enough to suit their preferences. However, if like some, you feel it could be improved upon, the superior duty felt is a good investment. It has been constructed with fibreglass which means it is resistant to breaking down over time. It also comes with the added benefit of being self-adhesive. So it is extremely simple to install.
The extra strength floor support pack isn’t necessarily needed with this building. As mentioned earlier, Waltons already supply a standard floor support pack which will increase the floor’s strength up to 28mm. However, investing in this extra strength kit will not only give you peace of mind, but it will also increase the lifespan of the building.
There are also two other extras we feel you should consider. The first is the weatherproof padlock. As the security of this shed does leave room for improvement, this very sturdy padlock is just what you need. At just £9.99 it actually boasts some really impressive features. For example, it offers double locking and comes with a steel laminated body. It also has a very impressive thermoplastic weatherproof jacket. Then there’s the added benefit of it coming with a hasp and staple. The second extra which we would actually go as far as to say is an essential purchase, is the Waltons 8×6 Portabase.
The Portabase has been cleverly designed so that it boosts the shed off the floor and provides a very sturdy, strong base. As well as providing additional strength to the building, it also makes it easier to build. We can’t stress enough how important it is to make sure you are building the shed on a firm, level base.
Another extra which we recommend if you have a lot of storage is the wooden shelf sets. There are four in total, offering different sizes and tiers. Three of them are double tier shelves and are available in 3ft, 4ft and 5ft lengths. There’s also a triple tier shelving set measuring 5ft in length. It is their construction that is seriously impressive, with each built from 16mm thick planed tongue and groove. The shelves easily slot together, helping to form a strong, solid panel. They also consist of strong thick framing to ensure that even heavy toolboxes are fully supported.
If the floor was constructed out of the same sturdy Shiplap cladding as the rest of the building, we’d have given this a 10/10 for quality. It boasts an outstanding design and it isn’t difficult to see why it has become one of Walton’s best-selling sheds.
Longevity Of Materials 8/10
The thick, durable cladding provides excellent longevity, though it does need to be treated to ensure it really withstands the test of time.
You are given a lot of storage space with this building thanks to the apex roof and tough cladding. The fact you can add tough tongue and groove constructed shelving is also an excellent benefit.
Ease Of Installation 8/10
This shed is very easy to put together, even if you choose to do it by yourself. However, it is advised that only 2 people attempt to construct the building. Everything you need is included and the instructions are easy to understand which is always an advantage.
You are treated to exceptional value for money, although you do need to factor in the regular treatments and potential upgrades. Overall though this is a good value shed that comes at a very reasonable cost.
Final Thoughts: If you’re looking for a high quality simple storage shed that won’t break the bank then this is a fantastic option. We like that Waltons provide a free floor strength support kit, as well as a free tub of treatment. This means that not only does the shed come at a low purchase price, but its long term value for money is also extraordinary. The only thing you may need to spend a little extra on is the security and privacy of the shed. However, this won’t cost too much money so even with various upgrades the shed still offers fantastic value.
