Workshop Type And Roof Size
At 12 feet 1 inch deep and 8 feet 6 inches wide, the Hartwood 12′ x 8′ FSC Pressure Treated Overlap Apex Workshop is quite the impressive sight. You will be able to work in style inside here no matter if you are working on some DIY projects, something more artistic or if you are just looking for a large space to hideout from the other half and the kids so you can have five minutes peace, this workshop is going to be perfect for you. We just love how large this is as it makes it not only an ideal workspace, but also something that would be amazing for general storage where things like bikes, gardening equipment, tools and anything else you may have can be kept tidied away. At 7 feet high along the ridge, you will have more than enough headroom to walk around comfortably and with the eaves at a respectable 5 feet 6 inches high, you can place some shelving, worktops or just stack stuff up along here.
Using oriented strand boarding to make the roof was a very interesting and smart choice. This is one very long apex roof so using this lightweight, but strong boarding was a very good idea in our opinion. It makes installing it much easier as you do not need the strength of the Incredible Hulk to lift the boards up. Protecting these boards from the rain is some lovely green mineral felt.
Cladding, Frame And Floor
The wall cladding is great and also, as the timber it is made from has been pressure treated, you will not have any worries or issues with rot. Overlap cladding is what they have gone for and it gives the workshop a really cool, rustic look. The thickness of the cladding is 8 mm which we feel is more than thick enough.
Inside the workshop is a 46 mm x 28 mm frame and on its own this is one solid frame that makes the whole structure very robust. But the way the cladding is nailed to the frame makes for not just a strong workshop, but one that is also waterproof as well. This frame and the cladding make one heck of a fantastic team and we are very impressed with it.
Oriented strand board like they have used for the roof has been used for the floor and this is strong enough boarding that you can put your mower, kids garden toys, heavy tools and anything else you have on it and it will not show any signs of stress. You also will show no signs of stress as rather than sitting on the lawn all this stuff will now be sitting on the floor of your workshop. Under this boarding to ensure the floor is not in direct contact with the ground is some strong and good sized floor joists.
Treatment Requirement And Warranty
You will have no worries about treating the Hartwood 12′ x 8′ FSC Pressure Treated Overlap Apex Workshop as the pressure treatment process the timber is put through takes away the need for annual treatment which on a workshop of this size you will be very happy as this would take quite a while to coat with treatment.
This workshop is protected with a 15 year anti rot guarantee which is one of the most generous guarantees we have seen.
Doors And Windows
An awesome set of double doors sit on the front of the workshop and from a design point of view we really like the way these look. With both doors open you will have no trouble getting larger items inside here at all. The doors are made from that same pressure treated timber and with them also having a ‘z’ brace on the back they are very strong doors.
One side of the workshop has six shatterproof styrene windows on it. These are small windows, but with there being six of them you will still get plenty of light in the workshop and also be able to clearly see if anyone is sneaking up on you trying to get a peek at some of the epic stuff you are working on inside here. While we like the fact there are six windows on here, we do feel at this price they could have at least had one of them be an opening window.
Security And Privacy
The workshop doors can be closed with a good quality pad bolt. We like a pad bolt and would pick it over a turn button any day, but we do wish that they had included some kind of lock or even a cheap padlock. If you do want to keep the doors locked then you will have to purchase a padlock or one of their security options which we will talk about down below.
This is actually a far more private workshop than you would think as they are rather small windows so it is not all that easy to see inside. If privacy is something that you are worried about then adding blinds, curtains or even something as basic as fabric would be no trouble at all.
Customisation Options And Extras
If you are the kind of person who likes to put their personal touch on things then you could always give this a lick of paint. We personally love the way the pressure treated timber looks, but if your garden already has a certain style then you may want to give this a colour that goes with the other things you have in your garden.
Ok so as we teased just up above they do actually offer a couple of security options with this workshop. First of all is their hasp and padlock set which costs £19.99. They also have an electronic shed alarm kit, which can be added for a cost of £29.99. These are both higher quality ways to lock up your workshop, but if you are after something quick and easy then a simple padlock would do. The last extra they have is a plastic shed base, made for those who are worried about installing the workshop on grass. While the idea of this is something we can really get behind, the £239.99 price tag is certainly on the high side.
With the timber being pressure treated, this does make this a more high quality workshop that ones that are of a similar size. In general this is one very high quality workshop and we feel they have done a great job in its design.
Longevity of Materials 8.5/10
We really like the selection of materials with this workshop as they are going to last a very long time, but they also do not need a whole lot of care from you.
This is one behemoth of a workshop. The sheer size of it will not become apparent until you have installed it and are standing inside it for the first time.
Ease of Installation 8/10
Please make sure you have a friend to help you install this as its size can make certain parts a little tricky. Still this is not what we would class as a hard installation so even people who are more novice DIYers will not have too much trouble here.
This is a bit on the pricy side, but we still feel it is excellent value for money as it is made from pressure treated wood and it is just such an impressive size.
Final Thoughts: We are very pleased with the Hartwood 12' x 8' FSC Pressure Treated Overlap Apex Workshop. Not only is this a very large size, they have also ensured that no corners have been cut and that it is of a high quality from top to bottom. The space inside the workshop means that no matter what you decide to use this for, you are going to have plenty of space on your hands and the good height of the roof means that being inside here will not require you to walk around hunched over. We really like this workshop and if a lot of space is what you are after then you will struggle to beat this.
