Playhouse Type And Roof Size
We can only imagine how big the kids smiles will be when they walk into the garden and see the awesome Shire Loft 8X6 Playhouse standing right in front of them. This is a two storey playhouse so it really does have quite the epic look to it. We always find that these loft style playhouses are a huge hit as the kids seem to feel that having an upstairs makes them even more fun and who are we to disagree with that? Anyway this has a fantastic design and just such an adorable look that you are going to be just as thrilled as the children are to have this in the garden. It is almost like the person who designed this picked it right from the pages of a children’s story book, that is how charming the design of this is. The playhouse is 7 feet 8 inches wide and just under 6 feet deep which does not make this one of the larger playhouses on the market, but the floor space we feel is still very generous. Anyway the kids actually have even more space to make use of as there is an attic they can get up to with the help of a child safe ladder.
The apex roof that is on this playhouse is really nice and due to the attic level on one side of the playhouse the roof slopes down more on one side than the other. It looks fantastic and makes this stand out very well. Plus this roof is going to keep the rain from sitting on it so there is no way for it to get into the playhouse. The roof is made with some impressive solid sheet boards that are then covered with roofing felt to keep them rot free. We almost forgot to tell you that the roof has this very attractive little overhang that covers the front of the playhouse, this is one feature that we really like as it just makes the whole front of the playhouse look extra cute.
Cladding, Frame And Floor
To help give the playhouse the cabin in the woods type look that they were going for, Shire spared no expense and used high quality 12 mm thick tongue and groove cladding. We really do love the look of this cladding and actually we have seen it on numerous children’s playhouses now and it really is the perfect choice as it just has such an adorable look to it. The thickness of it and the way it interlocks together mean that it is both strong and able to keep the rain out.
To ensure this is a playhouse that is going to last as long as your kids can fit inside a very robust framing has been used. This is some thick and sturdy framing that will make it so the playhouse can take the odd bang from them jumping around or even a Spongebob Squarepants teddy getting slammed against the wall. The best playhouse we always feel are the ones where the designers made them so they can take a bit of rough play and we are positive this one can take it.
The flooring used inside here is going to be able to handle all the jumping, running and anything else the kids can do on it. Strong boarding has been used for both the lower and the upper level, ensuring the kids are going to get many years out of this. Under the playhouse are some impressive floor joists which will back up those boards and also raise the structure of the ground a little bit.
Treatment Requirement And Warranty
The playhouse is going to require treatment once it has been installed. This will protect that lovely looking timber from rot and while the timber will be given a basecoat treatment this is only ideal for the short term and we suggest you treat it within a couple of weeks of construction. Be sure to buy a big tub as the wood will need a fresh coating once a year.
The Shire Loft 8X6 Playhouse comes with a ten year anti rot guarantee, but you are only ably to claim off this if you have actually treated the wood.
Doors And Windows
The door on here is just lovely. It is a single door, but it is a good height and width so the kids will never have any issues dragging that giant stuffed animal they like to wrestle with inside. There is a little diamond shaped window, a classic door knob and three large hinges which are not only used to keep the door in place, but are also a nice decorative piece on the door as well.
This is a playhouse that has a very generous amount of windows. Including the little diamond one which is on the door there is five windows. Three of these are on the front and these are fixed windows, one on the side is able to be opened and two of them also have a window box. Now the one pictured does have multiple opening windows and window boxes, but the actual model that is sold does not so please keep that in mind. Anyway we feel the one opening window and two windows boxes are more than enough. Shire have not used glass for the windows, instead they have used childsafe, shatterproof styrene.
Security And Privacy
There is no way to lock the door so you may want to install a large pad bolt to prevent it opening in the wind, but be sure to use one that the kids can operate themselves.
The decent amount of windows that this playhouse has makes it very easy to have a little look inside and watch the kids play. While we are sure after a while they will get sick of this, you are going to really enjoy being able to watch them use their imaginations. If they eventually have enough of the grownups watching them then you could let them have a little fun by picking out some cheap curtains to put over the windows.
Customisation Options And Extras
No official customisation options are offered with this, but you could always give the playhouse a lick of paint in your child’s favourite colour if you did want to brighten this up a little bit.
You might want to purchase something to help keep that door securely close and as there are a couple of window boxes a few plants to put in them might be a good idea. Apart from this there really is nothing else you need to consider.
This is one very sturdy playhouse that really does have a solid and high quality look and feel to it.
Longevity of Materials
The materials selected for this playhouse were done so because of their ability to last many years and also take a bit of abuse from the kids. This is one very robust playhouse and as long as you remember to treat the wood it will stay looking fantastic also.
While no the largest playhouse we have seen, 8 x 6 is still a very good size, plus they have the extra room provided by the attic area they can make use of.
Ease of Installation
Without a doubt this is a two person job so suck up to a friend and get them to help. It may be a little bit fiddly in places, but it should not cause you any major problems and will take around, 6-8 hours to build.
We feel that for the price, you are getting one amazing looking and well built playhouse.
Final Thoughts: We are incredibly impressed with the Shire Loft 8X6 Playhouse. It manages to be a playhouse that has a truly amazing and just down right adorable look and it is a place where the kids are going to have a lot of fun in. As this is a structure that is very strong, long lasting and will provide years of fun, it really is going to make you feel very happy and positive that you got a great deal. In all this is one of the best multi level playhouses we have seen. It offers everything the kids could want in a playhouse and it is being sold for what we feel is a very fair price.
