Summerhouse Type And Roof Size
Now here is one very interesting and uniquely designed summerhouse from the good folks at Shire. Their Sun 8X6 Shiplap Timber Summerhouse is something that really has surprised us. To start with while this is called a summerhouse it actually would work very well as some kind of workshop or even as a space to do some gardening. You see there is a large bench inside of here that runs along under the windows. We have never seen anything like this in a summerhouse before so it is certainly an interesting choice. The summerhouse is just an inch over 8 feet wide and the depth is 5 feet 8 inches which is not as large as some of the other summerhouses we have seen, but for a smaller garden this kind of size is what we consider to be ideal. The eaves height is just over six feet tall which for some may be a little low, but if you plan on spending a lot of time sitting down in here with a glass of wine it really will not matter.
A pent roof has been used on this summerhouse and it is made from some high quality boarding and then covered with high quality roofing felt. The main benefit of a pent roof is that the rain will always run off and not just sit on top. This pent roof will see the water run off the back of the summerhouse which we always prefer over it running off the front.
Cladding, Frame And Floor
We really like what Shire have done with the cladding. They have used thick, tongue and groove shiplap cladding which has been planed smooth to give it a very sleek and classy style. From the bottom to the very top this cladding is going to keep any water out so no matter if you do have a chair and table in here or even a whole load of plants you are trying to grow then they will not get ruined by the rain.
This is one of the more durable and long lasting summerhouse we have seen and that is because of the 44 mm x 44 mm framing that has been used. This thick frame makes this one very robust summerhouse and it is actually a size of framing that is not all that common in summerhouses of this size. We feel that by using a frame like this, Shire clearly intend this to be something of a jack of all trades and not just used as a summerhouse.
The flooring is going to be up to the task of taking anything you can throw its way. This kind of strong, solid boarding means that you could just have a couple of chairs and a table in order to relax or you could load this up with gardening equipment and plants and use it as something of a greenhouse. The floor joists that come with the summerhouse are of a good quality and will stop the summerhouse from having to be in direct contact with the ground which is a good thing if grass is what you are going to be installing this on.
Treatment Requirement And Warranty
While the Shire 8X6 Shiplap Timber Summerhouse that is pictured is in a lovely blue colour the one that will be sent to you will be unpainted. It will be given a basecoat treatment so that the timber will not suffer during transit, but a coating of wood treatment needs to be applied once installation is complete. Shire suggest within six weeks, but for us that is a little long and we always recommend doing it sooner than that. Once a year you should dig the paintbrush out from the back of the shed and give it a fresh coating of wood treatment.
Shire are always one of the best when it comes to their guarantee and as we expected this summerhouse comes with their ten year anti rot guarantee. This is one very generous guarantee, but in order for it to be valid, you need to treat the whole summerhouse.
Doors And Windows
We really like what Shire have done with the door it is one of the more secure doors that we have seen on a Summerhouse and the fact that it comes with an actual lock is something that impressed us. We are pleased with the size of the door as it will make getting items in and out not too much trouble. If we are being honest, we would have liked to have seen a double door on here, but this single door does fit in with the style of the summerhouse. Speaking of style, we really wish that they put a little window or even some kind of decoration on the door to give it a bit more personality.
This is a summerhouse that is jam packed with windows. Now the one pictured has six along the front, but that is the slightly larger model. This one has five glass windows right on the front of the summerhouse. These are placed just in front of the shelf that is inside so this would be a great place to put some plants as they will get a lot of sun. The two sides of the summerhouse have another window, but these ones can be opened so you can let fresh air into the structure.
Security And Privacy
The door has a lock which is just fantastic as it saves you the hassle of installing a padlock. It also means that you can put more expensive items inside of here like a TV or even some more expensive gardening equipment. In general we feel that this is one very secure summerhouse and that your belongings are going to be safe inside of here.
While this is a secure summerhouse it is also one that is very easy to look into due to the large windows, so you will certainly want to make sure you have your pants on when you are relaxing or looking after your plants. The shelf that is next to the windows may make it a little harder to get a set of blinds that will fit and still look good. So if privacy is a concern of yours, you may be better looking at curtains or fabric to give yourself a little bit of privacy.
Customisation Options And Extras
As you can see from the pictures with a coating of blue paint this summerhouse looks amazing, but it does not have to be blue it coloured be any colour that you want. You could certainly make use of that shelf and put some ornaments, plants or whatever on there to make the summerhouse feel a little more homely.
Here we would normally tell you that you will need to go to your local pound store and buy a padlock, but as this comes with a lock already on the door that is not necessary. We always love it when a summerhouse comes with everything you need and there are no hidden extras to think about.
This is one very well made summerhouse and it has that Shire, high quality all throughout.
Longevity of Materials 8.5/10
Due to being made with such impressive materials, you are going to get many years of use out of this. We can see this lasting 20 or more years easily. Just be sure to keep on top of the annual treatment and it will stay looking smooth for a very long time.
While not the smallest summerhouse it is also not the largest we have ever seen and if you do plan on using this as an actual summerhouse then that large bench may get in the way a little bit.
Ease of Installation 10/10
No worries of doors being put on upside down, windows smashed or a trip to the A&E as this comes with an installation service.
We know that the price does include an installation service and the product is very well made, but it is still a lot of money for a summerhouse of this size.
Final Thoughts: The Sun 8X6 Shiplap Timber Summerhouse is a very interesting structure and it is certainly one of the most versatile products we have seen from Shire. A summerhouse, general storage and a greenhouse are the kind of things that you could use this for. It is very well made and Shire have certainly used the very best when it comes to the materials in their looks and in how long lasting and robust they are. The price is a little high, but then again this does include their installation service so that does make it seem a bit fairer. If want some extra garden storage or just a place to have a little quiet time, then this is one structure that is going to give you many years of service and it is also going to look very nice as it stands in your garden.
