Shed Type and Roof Size
There are reviews of Dorset summerhouses elsewhere on this site, and once you have taken a look at a few, you’ll see just how varied the range is. Like the Tete a Tete range that BillyOh offers, this one has been designed seemingly to offer the consumer the widest variety possible in sizes. This one measures up well, with 5 m in width providing ample space for whichever setup you have in mind. Uses that immediately come to our attention include a smart home gym or a home office. Of course, you could just use it for an excellent entertaining space. Space may become an issue if you’re expecting a lot of depth. It is twice as wide as it is deep, and this may affect your choices if you are thinking of a particular size office, for example. As it stands, there are three separate depths in the range across a range of widths. This has the smallest depth out of the three, at 2.5 m. It’s just one of many choices with the Dorset, and never let it be said that BillyOh don’t offer options.
Cladding, Frame and Floor
BillyOh comes up trumps again with the cladding, offering 28mm thick as standard. This is an excellent thickness, and should provide you with a solid feel with that tongue and groove work that goes into it. So it’s strong, but will it provide insulation?
The short answer is ‘no’. Once again, this is all about choices and BillyOh obviously want you to choose if you need this all year round or if you just want a real summerhouse for the summer. We reckon the 28 mm is strong, but it won’t give you what you need in the winter, especially for a building this size. So if you need that all year round experience, whether it’s for entertaining or for a home office, opt for either the 35mm or the 44mm that BillyOh offers. Either of these two thicknesses will give you a warm and strong building, even in the middle of February.
The company pushes for the seasonal feel again with the glazing. It’s single glazing, which means plastic that has been toughened so it can be used in a large building. But that doesn’t mean it is capable of giving insulation. BillyOh bring another option here with double glazing costing £245.
Essentially, the company is asking customers to work out what they want the building for. If it’s seasonal, forget the upgrades. If it’s a year-round thing (and at this price for starters it should be) then go for double glazing and thicker cladding.
It all depends on what you need the building for obviously. And we like this about BillyOh. Even on the mid-size and value buildings like this one, they throw a lot of options your way.
There is no flooring supplied, and this is more because BillyOh want to give you real options than to take more money off you. Some people want to fit their own floors. Some even want to have a building with no floor and have a flat concrete base just waiting for a summer house to fit over it. Others will need to choose between the standard tongue and groove 11 mm floor provided as an extra or the 19mm floor.
We’re going to stick our neck out here and actually state that the standard 11mm tongue and groove roof supplied by BillyOh is more than capable of handling things for you, and that it should be covered with mineral felt (another purchase required). If you want the rather attractive and heavy shingle covering, we say go for it (it’s enhanced weather protection and it looks great, coming in a variety of colours but we would recommend the 19mm roof to take the weight).
Just to help those customers who may be caught unawares (and we suspect there will be more than a few), if you don’t choose a roof covering you will have to find one yourself elsewhere. Otherwise you will be stuck with the plain timber roof of the natural finish the building comes with. This is not advisable, and we suggest at you at least fit felt, which you can find anywhere.
There are many colours available for the finish of the building. Again, if you wish you can buy finishes from most DIY stores, but BillyOh offer a good range and this range has obviously been created to complement the building. So take your pick from a selection of standard finishes that look great and can protect against mould and the weather in general, or a bigger range of premium colours as well as premium varnish.
Tongue and groove work in vital areas like the walls and the roof means that you have a building with quality at the heart.
Longevity Of Materials 9/10
With treatment and care, this building should last a number of years. It is high quality and has solid materials.
It may lack depth for some people, but this price is perfect for the width and spaciousness inside.
Ease Of Installation 10/10
It shouldn't take two people more than a couple of days to have this set up.
Sure, you can make this an exceptional building with customisation, but even as it stands you have a lot of good cabin features here for the cost.
Final Thoughts: BillyOh show their commitment to quality once again with a sturdy building that has some excellent features. We liked the 28mm cladding as standard and the tough roof. With many of the BillyOh products (including others in this range) this one can benefit from customisation, but this does not mean the base spec here is in any way unsatisfactory. In fact, it is a solid, wide building that will provide a good entertaining space. We do feel that single glazing is a little disappointing in a building of this cost, but we also see that BillyOh is giving clear options here. With a bit of extra expenditure, you can enhance this building even further.
