Shed Type And Roof Size
We have looked at many discount sheds, but the Wickes Overlap Dip Treated Apex Shed really is one of the best value sheds we have seen. This is offering a surprisingly decent amount of floor space considering the price. The width is just over 7 feet and the depth is 4 feet 7 inches which considering the price is quite a bit of room to play with. Tools, a mower, shelving and many other things will be able to comfortably fit inside here. Plus with the right kind of planning you can make this space go even further! The headroom provided by this shed is also impressive as along the ridge there is just a hair over 7 feet of headroom so getting to your tools and other items you store in here is going to be easy.
Now as this is what we would class as a discount shed, we knew going in that in some places they would have to cut back and use more modest materials. It seems that it is the roof where they have done this. Do not get us wrong there is nothing wrong at all with a solid sheet boarding roof. It is practical and it is probably a huge reason as to why Wickes can sell this shed for such a reasonable price. On top of the boarding is roofing felt which as long as you install properly will last for many, many years.
Cladding, Frame And Floor
Wickes have used some overlap cladding for their Wickes Overlap Dip Treated Apex Shed which we are fine with. We always like the classic, somewhat rustic look that overlap cladding has and it is more than up to the task of dealing with even our harshest weather. Now while we like the way this cladding looks, we do wish that Wickes would just come out and say how thick it is. We would assume that it is either 8 mm or 12 mm, but we cannot say for sure.
There is a good and thick frame in here which is going to really make sure this is one solid shed. Sometimes discount sheds tend to have something of a weaker frame in order to cut costs, but that is not the case here. We are confident that even 10, 15 years down the road this will be just as strong as the day it was installed and that is because of the impressive framing.
This is a shed that is full of surprises and the first surprise was the floor. We would have put our lunch money on there being a solid sheet boarding floor in this shed, but we would have lost as instead they have this very nice and smart looking high quality boarded floor. It is going to provide you with a bit more strength than you would get with solid sheet boarding and it does not hurt that it is also a lot easier on the eyes.
Treatment Requirement And Warranty
Like many of the other discount sheds we have seen the wood used is dip treated, so you will need to give it a generous coating of wood treatment shortly after construction. A new coat should be applied once a year. You do this and the wood will stay free from rot and decay.
A ten year guarantee comes with this shed as long as you treat the wood on a regular basis. This is in line with what most other dip treated sheds have so we have no complaints about this.
Doors And Windows
Getting a large mower in here would be very easy as even at the modest price point they have included a large set of double doors. We have to say that we just love these doors. They have hidden hinges which certainly gives them a rather strange, but cool look. The doors also are very strong as they have z braces which will stop them from becoming weak or feeling flimsy when you close them. How they have managed to include a set of doors like this and keep the price at what it is, is beyond us, but we suspect some kind of witchcraft is involved.
There is one polycarbonate window located on one side of the shed. This was good to see and while a polycarbonate window was clearly chosen to keep the costs down, we do not actually have any issue with this. You will not have any issues with the window turning yellow as the years go by or even it smashing into a million pieces if one of the kids kicks a ball at it.
Security And Privacy
While the Wickes Overlap Dip Treated Apex Shed does not come with a lock and key this is still a very secure shed. As we said before the hinges are hidden, but also the screws are kind of hidden as well. Now of course we are not saying some maniac is going to come into your garden with a screwdriver and take one of the walls off. But with the screws being slightly hidden it would be a lot harder for this to happen. Those double doors even without a lock can be securely closed thanks to the hasp and staple, but adding a padlock is something you might want to consider if you have a lot of expensive items in here.
While there is one small window, we are happy with the level of privacy that this offers. The window is on one of the sides and it is not large so it would be rather tricky for a person to have a sneaky peak inside.
Customisation Options And Extras
If you do want to spruce it up a little then using a wood treatment that is coloured would be a good idea. Plus as well as giving the shed a bit of colour you are also protecting the wood from rot.
As this is Wickes we thought for sure that they would have all kinds of extras and items you could add, but surprisingly there is not one single extra on offer here. Not even a padlock which is actually something most people are going to want. Sure you could search for it on their site, but we feel they have missed an opportunity here to show off a couple of their cool items that would go well with this shed.
Clearly this is not as high quality as a shed that is in the £800-1000 price range, but we feel considering the asking price, this is actually a very decently made shed that has some great features that took us by surprise.
Longevity Of Materials
We are confident that you are going to get many years of use out of this. The wood will need a little TLC, but at this price that is to be expected.
While not one of the largest sheds we have ever seen, for the price we feel that this offers a great amount of storage space. Plus it is not going to take up a vast amount of space in your garden either.
Ease Of Installation
This is what we would class as a rather easy two person job. But even if the two of you are more like the Chuckle Brothers than DIY experts, you should have this installed in around 4-6 hours, without much hassle or broken bones.
At a little under £200, we feel that this is a shed which is excellent value for money.
Final Thoughts: We really like the Wickes Overlap Dip Treated Apex Shed. As is the case with all discount sheds, the quality overall is not going to be as high as it would be with a more expensive shed, but still we are actually very impressed with some of the materials that they have used here. The storage space it offers is also very appealing as it manages to give you a good amount of space to make use of, without taking over the whole garden. If you want a decent shed, but do not have a huge budget or simply do not want to spent a whole lot of money, then we feel this is a shed you really need to take a closer look at.
