Dancover Expert Tip
Polytunnel greenhouses are great for growing a variety of different plants. Remember to water frequently, ventilate as much as possible and harvest your crops regularly! It is extremely important that you keep the cover on the polytunnel greenhouse stretched and taut at all times. Otherwise, a risk emerges that during a rainfall water pile up on the roof of your greenhouse, which may cause the greenhouse to collapse.

1. UV treated: The British Plastics Federation says that the addition of light stabilisers (they are called hindered amine light stabilisers (HALS)) in plastics are used “to inhibit the reactions in plastics which cause undesirable chemical degradation from exposure to UV light.” This chemical degradation from exposure to UV light is often seen as chalking or a white residue that forms as the polymers degrade over time. This degradation can often be avoided by adding HALS that are UV absorbers such as benzotriazoles, benzophenones or organic nickel compounds. By incorporating weathering stabilisers into the plastics used the damaging effects of UV light will be slowed down considerably.

2. Polyethylene: Polyethylene (Low Density) LDPE, LLDPE is not commonly used for the construction of garden buildings or storage units. The most common use for LDPE is in the thin film used to cover poly tunnels.

According to data from the British Plastics Fedaration the physical properties of Polyethylene (Low Density) are that it is not very good when exposed to high heat with a maximum continuous use temperature of 65 °C. This is however offset by the outstanding Notched Impact Strength data that showed ‘no break’.
