Our verdict on the 12′ x 20′ Sapphire Olympian Anthracite Metal Garage

The 12′ x 20′ Sapphire Olympian Anthracite Metal Garage comes with an apex style roof, holds a 10 Years guarantee, fit with double doors, and is treated using a powder coated process [1].

Base material: metal

Our experts say this has 2 stand out features. A stand out feature is something found on over 70% of the top 10% of products in a particular category or is an exceptionally good feature as rated by our panel of experts.

1. The metal cladding used on this shed is one the best available for sheds rated by our experts.

2. A powder coated treatment like the one used on this shed is one our experts are happy to say is one of the best around.

Below is a brief overview of how some of the key points of this shed fairs across the market.

Treatment/Guarantee

The powder coated treatment process used here is one of the best types of treatment out of 2 [2] types we’ve identified on same-size sheds that you’ll see getting used on 1% [3] (13 of 4,360) of all sheds analysed, with none of the top 10% of sheds (436 in total) [4] use this kind of treatment. In fact this is the only 12′ x 20′ shed you’ll find that uses a powder coated treatment process [5].

On a metal shed, the guarantee that the manufacturer offers is usually a very good indicator of the quality of the building. The longer the guarantee the more the manufacturer believes in the quality of the building they have produced. Typically we see manufacturer guarantees for metal Sheds ranging from zero right up to a 30 years guarantee.

This metal shed comes with a 10 years guarantee. Most metal shed come with a 10 years guarantee (36.47% of them) [6].

For this particular brand (Sapphire) they offer 12 [7] different types of guarantees on their metal sheds, with the 10 years guarantee on this being the shortest they offer. The 10 years guarantee is found on 28.57% of Sapphire metal sheds [8], with a 15 year guarantee on 71.43% of its metal sheds. It is a shame this shed was given the lowest guarantee offered by the brand, and this could be a reasonable indication that the manufacturer doesn’t have as much faith it the overall quality of this part of their product range.

When looking at comparable 12′ x 20′ metal sheds (we found 114 of them) the most popular guarantee length offered by manufacturers was 10 years [9]. 82.46% came with a 10 year guarantee, 8.77% came with a missing guarantee, 5.26% came with a 15 year guarantee, 1.75% came with a 1 year guarantee and 1.75% came with a 12 year guarantee.

Cladding

The metal cladding(walls) used here is one of the best forms of construction for shed walls out of the 2 types [10] we’ve identified on same-size sheds, that you’ll also see getting used on 1% (58 of 4,360) of all sheds analysed [11], and sadly not present at all on any of the 436 sheds that make up the top 10% of sheds [12]. In fact this is the only 12′ x 20′ shed you’ll find that uses a metal wall [13].

The walls are 0.25mm thick and we rate this an about average thickness and is the only thickness found on same-size sheds [14]. It is used on 1% of all sheds [15] and after analysing the top 436 products that make up the top 10% of sheds [16], we don’t find this thickness present on any of them. Further analysis shows us that out of all 12′ x 20′ sheds this is the only one to use 0.25mm thick walls [17].

Roofing

Metal is the material used for the roofing, our experts rate this an about average form of roof material and is the only type we’ve found on same-size sheds [18]. This roofing material is used on 3% of all sheds analysed, and 17% of the top 10% of sheds. 3% of 12′ x 20′ sheds (3 in total) use metal construction for the roof.

A 0.25mm thick roof material was used on this shed which is the worst thickness used for a roofing material and is the only thickness identified on same-size sheds [19]. It’s used on 1% of all sheds with a further analysis of the top 10% of sheds (436 in total) showing us that none of them use a roof of this thickness. Our data on all 12′ x 20′ sheds shows us this is the only one to use a 0.25mm roofing solution.

1. Powder Coated: Typically used to give additional corrosion resistance to steel, powder coatings can be described as 100% solid paint which comprises a homogeneous blend of polymers, pigments and additives produced in the form of a fine powder. The powder is applied on the object to be coated. The object is then subjected to heat which causes the powder to melt, flow out and form a tough, coherent film.

Almost all the paints that are used for powder coating are epoxy polyester hybrid powders, these hybrids have properties similar to those of epoxy powders, however, their additional advantage is that they have improved resistance to overbake yellowing and more importantly for a garden structure improved weatherability. The polyester also helps counteract the poor UV light properties of pure epoxy coatings where chalking will occur in an exterior environment.

According to the BCF (British Coatings Federation) they say this about the durability of powder coated products “This method is often used for large work pieces such as pipe line valves, fence posts etc. or small articles from the electronics industry. These coatings give a thick, tough film with excellent corrosion resistance and good mechanical, electrical insulation and chemical properties.”
