Below is a brief overview of how some of the key points of this shed fairs across the market.

Cladding

The feather edge cladding(walls) used here is an about average form of construction for shed walls out of the 4 types [2] we’ve identified on same-size sheds, that you’ll also see getting used on 1% (16 of 4,360) of all sheds analysed [3], and sadly not present at all on any of the 436 sheds that make up the top 10% of sheds [4]. In fact this is the only 12′ x 8′ shed you’ll find that uses a feather edge wall [5].

The walls are 16mm thick and we rate this the best thickness out of the 10 found on same-size sheds [6]. It is used on 2% of all sheds [7] and is also used across 3% of the top 10% of sheds [8] we analysed. While you’ll find that the Expert Score of this shed is 3 points lower than the average for 12′ x 8’s that use 16mm thick cladding (87 vs the average of 90) [9], you can be sure it’s not due to the cladding thickness as this one of the highest scoring thicknesses available on 12′ x 8′ sheds. 3% of 12′ x 8′ sheds (7 in total) use 16mm thick walls.

Roofing

Tongue & groove is the cladding used for the roofing, our experts rate this the best form of roof material out of the 3 types we’ve found on same-size sheds [10]. This roofing material is used on 34% of all sheds analysed, and 57% of the top 10% of sheds. Even though the Expert Score of this particular shed is 2 points below the average of 89 for 12′ x 8’s using a tongue & groove roofing, with it being on 57% of the top 10%, you can be assured that this is a quality roof material. 35% of 12′ x 8′ sheds (96 in total) use tongue & groove construction for the roof.

A 12.0mm thick roof boarding was used on this shed which is one of the best thicknesses used for a roofing material out of 12 thicknesses identified on same-size sheds [11]. It’s used on 3% of all sheds and 5% of the top 10% of sheds. Even though the Expert Score of this particular shed is 3 points below that of the average for 12′ x 8’s that use 12.0mm roofing (87 vs the average of 90), you can be sure it’s not due to the roof thickness as this one of the highest scoring thicknesses available on 12′ x 8′ sheds. 7% of 12′ x 8′ sheds (18 in total) use a 12.0mm thick roof boarding.

Mineral felt is used as the roof covering, and out of 4 types identified on same-size sheds [12], is said to be one of the best roof covering materials. It comes fitted on 22% of sheds and used on 49% of the top 10% of 12′ x 8′ sheds. 22% of 12′ x 8′ sheds (61 in total) make use of a mineral felt material as a roof covering, and when taking the average Expert Score of those 12′ x 8′ sheds (87), the 12′ x 8′ Shed Republic Ultimate Barnstyle Workshop Standard Door is the same with an Expert Score of 87.

Flooring

Great, our experts say most of the flooring options used are among the best.

The manufactures of this shed chose tongue & groove for the floor construction, we rate this the best form of floor construction out of 3 types found on same-size sheds [13]. This type of floor construction is used on 36% of all sheds we analysed, and 59% of the top 10% of those sheds. Even though the Expert Score of this particular shed is 2 points below the average of 89 for 12′ x 8’s using a tongue & groove flooring, with it being on 59% of the top 10%, you can be assured that this is a quality flooring material. 35% of 12′ x 8′ sheds (97 in total) use tongue & groove construction for the floor.

A 19mm thick floor boarding is used here, this is the best floor board thickness according to our experts out of 11 found on same-size sheds [14]. It’s found on 1% of all sheds and used on 1% of the top 10% of sheds. Even though the Expert Score of this shed is 3 points lower than that of the average for 12′ x 8’s floored with a 19mm material (87 vs the average of 90), you can be sure it’s not due to the flooring because this one of the highest scoring flooring thicknesses available on 12′ x 8′ sheds. 1% of 12′ x 8′ sheds (3 in total) use 19mm thick floor boarding.

Even though the Expert Score of this shed is 5 points lower than that of the average for 4mm glazed 12′ x 8’s (87 vs the average of 92), you can be sure it’s not due to the thickness of the windows because this one of the highest scoring available on 12′ x 8′ sheds. 21% of 12′ x 8′ sheds (39 in total) use 4mm thick glazing.

1. Pressure Treated: Considered the most durable wood treatment, this is where the wood undergoes a process called tanalisation. This is where the timber is submerged in specialist wood preservatives (such as Tanalith E, this is actually the origin of the word ‘tanalisation’), this is a unique combination of copper and organic biocide ingredients (it is the copper that gives the finished wood the slightly green colour). The wood then goes into a high pressure vacuum tank (the Wood Protection Association has a good article/video on this) to draw out excess moisture and air and force in the preservatives.

This deep penetration of the exterior wood protects it from the elements and all forms of insect attack. Wood treated this way can last many years without being re-treated. The BS 8417 code of practice (this advises on the choice of timber species and the use and application of wood preservatives) says “ penetration to either 6 mm (15 years) or 12mm (for 30 years) has to be achieved in any exposed surface in sawn material.”

It is also worth noting that if cross cutting, notching or boring treated timber during or after installation, ALWAYS apply an end grain solvent-based (or oil-based) wood preservative treatment to the freshly exposed areas, this will maintain the integrity of the protection. NEVER put cut ends in the ground, even if end grain coated.
