Our verdict on the 6′ x 8′ Palram Canopia Grey Skylight Plastic Shed

The 6′ x 8′ Palram Canopia Grey Skylight Plastic Shed comes with an apex style roof, holds a 5 Years guarantee, fit with double doors, and is treated using a uv protected process [1]. The windows window used on this particular 6′ x 8′ use a twin wall polycarbonate glazing material (Thickness was not specified).

Base material: plastic

Our experts say this has 3 stand out features. A stand out feature is something found on over 70% of the top 10% of products in a particular category or is an exceptionally good feature as rated by our panel of experts.

1. The polycarbonate construction like the one used on the roof of this shed is rated one of the best by our panel of experts.

2. This twin wall polycarbonate glazing material is one that our experts say is one of the best available for windowed sheds.

3. A uv protected treatment like the one used on this shed is one our experts are happy to say is one of the best around.

Below is a brief overview of how some of the key points of this shed fairs across the market.

Treatment/Guarantee

The uv protected treatment process used here is one of the best types of treatment out of 2 [2] types we’ve identified on same-size sheds that you’ll see getting used on 2% [3] (82 of 4,360) of all sheds analysed, as well as being used on 1% [4] (4 of 436) of the top 10% of sheds. While you’ll find that the Expert Score of this shed is 2 points lower than the average for uv protected 6′ x 8’s (85 vs the average of 87 [5]), you can be sure it’s not due to the treatment as this one of the highest scoring treatments found on 6′ x 8′ sheds. You’ll also find the uv protected treatment showing up on 2% of 6′ x 8′ sheds (9 in total).

On a plastic shed, the guarantee that the manufacturer offers is usually a very good indicator of the quality of the building. The longer the guarantee the more the manufacturer believes in the quality of the building they have produced. Typically we see manufacturer guarantees for plastic Sheds ranging from zero right up to a limited lifetime guarantee.

This plastic shed comes with a 5 years guarantee. Most plastic shed come with a 10 years guarantee (36.47% of them) [6].

For this particular brand (Palram Canopia) they offer 12 [7] different types of guarantees on their plastic sheds, with the 5 years guarantee on this being the shortest they offer. The 5 years guarantee is found on 3.23% of Palram Canopia plastic sheds [8], with a 10 year guarantee on 64.52%, a 12 year guarantee on 9.68% and a 15 year guarantee on 22.58% of its plastic sheds. It is a shame this shed was given the lowest guarantee offered by the brand, and this could be a reasonable indication that the manufacturer doesn’t have as much faith it the overall quality of this part of their product range.

When looking at comparable 6′ x 8′ plastic sheds (we found 474 of them) the most popular guarantee length offered by manufacturers was 10 years [9]. 47.68% came with a missing guarantee, 34.18% came with a 10 year guarantee, 12.24% came with a 15 year guarantee, 1.90% came with a 1 year guarantee, 1.27% came with a 30 year guarantee, 0.84% came with a 3 year guarantee, 0.42% came with a 20 year guarantee, 0.42% came with a 12 year guarantee, 0.42% came with a 5 year guarantee, 0.42% came with a 25 year guarantee, 0.21% came with a limited lifetime guarantee and 0.00% came with a lifetime guarantee.

Cladding

The plastic cladding(walls) used here is an about average form of construction for shed walls out of the 2 types [10] we’ve identified on same-size sheds, that you’ll also see getting used on 2% (84 of 4,360) of all sheds analysed [11], as well as being used on 1% (4 of 436) of the top 10% of sheds [12]. You’ll also find the plastic cladding showing up on 2% of 6′ x 8′ sheds (8 in total) [13].

While you’ll find that the Expert Score of this shed is 4 points lower than the average for 6′ x 8’s that use polycarbonate roof material (85 vs the average of 89), you can be sure it’s not due to the roofing as this one of the highest scoring materials found on 6′ x 8′ sheds. 1% of 6′ x 8′ sheds (5 in total) use polycarbonate construction for the roof.

A 6.0mm thick roof material was used on this shed which is the worst thickness used for a roofing material out of 2 thicknesses identified on same-size sheds [15]. It’s used on 1% of all sheds with a further analysis of the top 10% of sheds (436 in total) showing us that none of them use a roof of this thickness. Our data on all 6′ x 8′ sheds shows us this is the only one to use a 6.0mm roofing solution.

1. UV treated: The British Plastics Federation says that the addition of light stabilisers (they are called hindered amine light stabilisers (HALS)) in plastics are used “to inhibit the reactions in plastics which cause undesirable chemical degradation from exposure to UV light.” This chemical degradation from exposure to UV light is often seen as chalking or a white residue that forms as the polymers degrade over time. This degradation can often be avoided by adding HALS that are UV absorbers such as benzotriazoles, benzophenones or organic nickel compounds. By incorporating weathering stabilisers into the plastics used the damaging effects of UV light will be slowed down considerably.
