Below is a brief overview of how some of the key points of this greenhouse fairs across the market.

Guarantee

On a metal greenhouse, the guarantee that the manufacturer offers is usually a very good indicator of the quality of the building. The longer the guarantee the more the manufacturer believes in the quality of the building they have produced. Typically we see manufacturer guarantees for metal Greenhouses ranging from zero right up to a 15 years guarantee.

This metal greenhouse comes with a 15 years guarantee. Most metal greenhouse come with a 5 years guarantee (52.56% of them) [2].

For this particular brand (Halls) they offer 6 [3] different types of guarantees on their metal greenhouses, with the 15 years guarantee on this being the only they offer. The 15 years guarantee is found on 100.00% of Halls metal greenhouses [4]. It is great that this greenhouse was given one of the highest guarantees offered by the brand, and this shows the manufacturer has a lot of faith in the overall quality of this part of their product range.

When looking at comparable 6′ x 4′ metal greenhouses (we found 65 of them) the most popular guarantee length offered by manufacturers was 5 years [5]. 64.62% came with a missing guarantee, 12.31% came with a 5 year guarantee, 7.69% came with a 10 year guarantee, 7.69% came with a 12 year guarantee, 6.15% came with a 15 year guarantee and 1.54% came with a 1 year guarantee.

This particular type of glazing is used on 4% of all windowed greenhouses and 12% of the top 10% of greenhouses with windows we analysed. Even though the Expert Score of this greenhouse is 1 point lower than that of the average for twin wall polycarbonate glazed 6′ x 4’s (80 vs the average of 81), you can be sure it’s not due to the material of the windows because this one of the highest scoring available on 6′ x 4′ greenhouses. 6% of 6′ x 4′ greenhouses with windows (2 in total) use twin wall polycarbonate windows.

1. Aluminium: Is a very stable metal that has very low corrosion rates in neutral environments (such as domestic garden buildings). The good corrosion resistance of aluminium alloys means that they are perfectly suited for outdoor and industrial environments. This resistance is caused because aluminium is a very reactive metal with a high affinity for oxygen, The reactive character of the aluminium with oxygen means an aluminium oxide film forms on the metal surface that gives it a protective character.

The most common type of aluminium alloys used for architectural structures (such as garden buildings) is the 6XXX Aluminium-magnesium-silicon.

The Aluminium Federation in the article UK Aluminium Industry Fact Sheet 2, Aluminium and Corrosion say “The 6XXX series alloys are the most common amongst aluminium alloys and are widely used in transport, engineering and architecture.” They then go on to say “Most aluminium casting alloys are classified as having good corrosion resistance, and if used for purposes involving exposure out-of-doors, they will suffer no appreciable loss of strength as a result of corrosion. Weathering tests lasting more than ten years, carried out by The Association of Light Alloy Refiners, confirm that there is little difference in the resistance to atmospheric attack of the casting alloys…”
