Below is a brief overview of how some of the key points of this greenhouse fairs across the market.
Treatment/Guarantee
The galvanised treatment process used here is the best type of treatment out of 2 [4] types we’ve identified on same-size greenhouses that you’ll see getting used on 17% [5] (137 of 787) of all greenhouses analysed, as well as being used on 23% [6] (18 of 78) of the top 10% of greenhouses. You’ll also find the galvanised treatment showing up on 13% of 8′ x 12′ greenhouses (5 in total [7]), and when taking the average Expert Score of those 8′ x 12′ greenhouses (90), the 8’x12′ Palram Canopia Bella Large Walk In Silver Aluminium Framed Greenhouse is the same with an Expert Score of 90.
On a metal greenhouse, the guarantee that the manufacturer offers is usually a very good indicator of the quality of the building. The longer the guarantee the more the manufacturer believes in the quality of the building they have produced. Typically we see manufacturer guarantees for metal Greenhouses ranging from zero right up to a 15 years guarantee.
This metal greenhouse comes with a 5 years guarantee. Most metal greenhouse come with a 5 years guarantee (52.56% of them) [8].
For this particular brand (Palram Canopia) they offer 6 [9] different types of guarantees on their metal greenhouses, with the 5 years guarantee on this being the only they offer. The 5 years guarantee is found on 100.00% of Palram Canopia metal greenhouses [10]. It is great that this greenhouse was given one of the highest guarantees offered by the brand, and this shows the manufacturer has a lot of faith in the overall quality of this part of their product range.
When looking at comparable 8′ x 12′ metal greenhouses (we found 39 of them) the most popular guarantee length offered by manufacturers was 5 years [11]. 48.72% came with a missing guarantee, 17.95% came with a 5 year guarantee, 17.95% came with a 10 year guarantee, 12.82% came with a 12 year guarantee and 2.56% came with a 7 year guarantee.

You’ll also find the aluminium cladding showing up on 46% of 8′ x 12′ greenhouses (18 in total) [15], and if we compare this item against those 18 we find it’s Expert Score is 22% higher than the average score for a 8′ x 12′ aluminium greenhouse.

1. Galvanised: Galvanising steel or Zinc Galvanised steel as it is sometimes called refers to the process where steel is immersed into molten zinc. This is where a series of zinc-iron alloy forms a series layers via a metallurgical reaction between the iron and zinc, providing a robust coating which is an integral part of the steel.
Galvanised steel is among the most corrosion resistant due to its sacrificial protection and self-repairing properties. According to the Galvanizers Association they say “Hot dip galvanising offers coverage both externally and internally within hollow sections, it self-repairs when damaged, sacrifices itself to protect the base metal, is environmentally sustainable, has good impact and abrasion-resistance and a maintenance-free life of 50 years or more. Galvanised steel is widely used in applications where corrosion protection is needed and can be identified by the crystallised pattern on the surface (often called a ‘spangle’).” ↩
2. Polycarbonate: Is one of the toughest plastics available. The excellent toughness and thermal stability make Polycarbonate one of the most widely used thermoplastics. This durability makes this ideal for garden equipment and extremely durable plastic garden structure. Polycarbonate is also used for things such as riot shields, vandal proof glazing, safety helmets and headlamp lenses.
According to data from the British Plastics Fedaration the physical properties of Polycarbonate are that it is very good when exposed to high heat with a maximum continuous use temperature of 125 °C. This is coupled with the outstanding Notched Impact Strength data of 60 – 80 Kj/m². ↩
3. Aluminium: Is a very stable metal that has very low corrosion rates in neutral environments (such as domestic garden buildings). The good corrosion resistance of aluminium alloys means that they are perfectly suited for outdoor and industrial environments. This resistance is caused because aluminium is a very reactive metal with a high affinity for oxygen, The reactive character of the aluminium with oxygen means an aluminium oxide film forms on the metal surface that gives it a protective character.
The most common type of aluminium alloys used for architectural structures (such as garden buildings) is the 6XXX Aluminium-magnesium-silicon.
The Aluminium Federation in the article UK Aluminium Industry Fact Sheet 2, Aluminium and Corrosion say “The 6XXX series alloys are the most common amongst aluminium alloys and are widely used in transport, engineering and architecture.” They then go on to say “Most aluminium casting alloys are classified as having good corrosion resistance, and if used for purposes involving exposure out-of-doors, they will suffer no appreciable loss of strength as a result of corrosion. Weathering tests lasting more than ten years, carried out by The Association of Light Alloy Refiners, confirm that there is little difference in the resistance to atmospheric attack of the casting alloys…” ↩
