Our verdict on the Keter 6 x 4ft Darwin Shed Grey

The Keter 6 x 4ft Darwin Shed Grey comes with an apex style roof and holds a 15 Years guarantee. The windows window used on this particular 6′ x 4′ use a polycarbonate [1] glazing material (Thickness was not specified).

Base material: plastic

Our experts say this has 2 stand out features. A stand out feature is something found on over 70% of the top 10% of products in a particular category or is an exceptionally good feature as rated by our panel of experts.

1. A 16mm thick cladding like the one used on walls of this shed is one of the best rated by our experts.

2. This polycarbonate glazing material is one that our experts say is one of the best available for windowed sheds.

Below is a brief overview of how some of the key points of this shed fairs across the market.

Guarantee

On a plastic shed, the guarantee that the manufacturer offers is usually a very good indicator of the quality of the building. The longer the guarantee the more the manufacturer believes in the quality of the building they have produced. Typically we see manufacturer guarantees for plastic Sheds ranging from zero right up to a limited lifetime guarantee.

This plastic shed comes with a 15 years guarantee. Most plastic shed come with a 10 years guarantee (36.47% of them) [2].

For this particular brand (Keter) they offer 12 [3] different types of guarantees on their plastic sheds, with the 15 years guarantee on this being one of the shortest they offer. The 15 years guarantee is found on 31.25% of Keter plastic sheds [4], with a 5 year guarantee on 18.75%, a lifetime guarantee on 12.50% and a limited lifetime guarantee on 18.75% of its plastic sheds. It is great that this shed was given one of the highest guarantees offered by the brand, and this shows the manufacturer has a lot of faith in the overall quality of this part of their product range.

When looking at comparable 6′ x 4′ plastic sheds (we found 367 of them) the most popular guarantee length offered by manufacturers was 10 years [5]. 45.50% came with a missing guarantee, 33.79% came with a 10 year guarantee, 14.71% came with a 15 year guarantee, 2.45% came with a 30 year guarantee, 2.18% came with a 1 year guarantee, 1.09% came with a 20 year guarantee, 0.27% came with a 5 year guarantee, 0.00% came with a limited lifetime guarantee and 0.00% came with a lifetime guarantee.

Cladding

The plastic cladding(walls) used here is an about average form of construction for shed walls out of the 2 types [6] we’ve identified on same-size sheds, that you’ll also see getting used on 2% (84 of 4,360) of all sheds analysed [7], as well as being used on 1% (4 of 436) of the top 10% of sheds [8]. You’ll also find the plastic cladding showing up on 3% of 6′ x 4′ sheds (11 in total) [9], and when taking the average Expert Score of those 6′ x 4′ sheds (84), the Keter 6 x 4ft Darwin Shed Grey is just above the average with an Expert Score of 87.

The walls are 16mm thick and we rate this the best thickness out of the 4 found on same-size sheds [10]. It is used on 2% of all sheds [11] and is also used across 3% of the top 10% of sheds [12] we analysed. While you’ll find that the Expert Score of this shed is 7 points lower than the average for 6′ x 4’s that use 16mm thick cladding (87 vs the average of 94) [13], you can be sure it’s not due to the cladding thickness as this one of the highest scoring thicknesses available on 6′ x 4′ sheds. 1% of 6′ x 4′ sheds (5 in total) use 16mm thick walls.

1. Polycarbonate: Is one of the toughest plastics available. The excellent toughness and thermal stability make Polycarbonate one of the most widely used thermoplastics. This durability makes this ideal for garden equipment and extremely durable plastic garden structure. Polycarbonate is also used for things such as riot shields, vandal proof glazing, safety helmets and headlamp lenses.

According to data from the British Plastics Fedaration the physical properties of Polycarbonate are that it is very good when exposed to high heat with a maximum continuous use temperature of 125 °C. This is coupled with the outstanding Notched Impact Strength data of 60 – 80 Kj/m².
