1. Steel: Is the “world’s most important engineering and construction material” according to the World Steel Accosiation. When it comes to garden structure steel is often a very strong and durable metal, although if it is untreated then it is prone to rust and corrosion. Steel is an alloy of iron mixed with less than 2% carbon and 1% manganese and small amounts of silicon, phosphorus, sulphur and oxygen. When steel comes into contact with water and oxygen there is a chemical reaction and the steel begins to revert to its original form – iron oxide (that’s Rust to the layperson).
