Let's Take a Closer Look...
OK lets take a closer look at the workshop and see how all the important bits stack up. After all when your spending this kind of money its important that the building you buy is exactly what you want.
Shed Type and Roof Size
This is a tall, spacious 12×10 modular wooden workshop. It benefits from an apex roof which is specifically designed to help combat rainwater damage. The rain runs down the upside down V-shape roof and drips onto the floor, leaving no room for it to settle and cause any damage. The roof measures 2.56m in height, while the eaves measure an impressive 1.83m. This means you get plenty of internal head space to comfortably move around.
Heavy duty mineral felt is included to further make sure the roof is protected against the elements. You can also choose to upgrade to the Superior Duty felt. It may be a small upgrade but it can help to give you added peace of mind which is essential when you are spending so much money.
The shed measures 3.5m in width, 3.59m in depth and its door measures 1770 mm in height and 1116 mm in width.
Cladding, Frame and Floor
The reason why this workshop comes at such a high cost is because of its superior quality Shiplap tongue and groove cladding. Found only on high-end outdoor buildings, this is the most expensive and durable type of cladding available. It not only provides ultimate protection against the elements, but it is also extremely hard to break into. So you’re benefiting from both weather protection and added security.
The tongue and groove aspect of the design is also important as it provides an expansion gap. This basically means if there are any extreme changes in the weather, there will be room for the boards to expand without causing damage to the structure. It is a lot less likely to warp which means it will last a lot longer than overlap sheds.
The framing measures 2” x 1” and provides a strong, stable hold. What is particularly impressive about this workshop is the fact it comes with a 12mm tongue and groove floor. A lot of larger sheds are simply constructed with solid sheet materials. The tongue and groove cladding interlocks, creating an exceptionally strong bond. This means you can store heavy, bulky items without worrying about the weight on the floor.
Treatment Requirement and Warranty
The workshop is provided with a 10 year warranty against rot, though there are terms and conditions that you need to be aware of. It is easy to miss the small print on the merchant site which states you must treat the building before the warranty kicks in. So how often does it need to be treated?
The first treatment needs to be applied after it has been constructed. Then the frequency of future treatments will depend upon the type of treatment used. As this workshop is created with Shiplap cladding, the type of treatment recommended is spirit based. This treatment penetrates down into the timber forming an excellent barrier of protection. It doesn’t need to be reapplied on an annual basis which makes it great for those seeking a low-maintenance storage space.
The only thing to point out about the spirit based treatments is the fact they come in very limited colours. So if adding colour is important to you, the water based treatments could be a preferable option. They protect the surface of the wood which still ensures a waterproof barrier, but it will need to be reapplied every year. Another option you have is to first treat the timber with a spirit based product, then add colour with a water based treatment afterwards. However, when done this way you will notice the colour doesn’t come out as well as it would if you used a water based treatment on its own.
It is really important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding how often the workshop should be treated if you want to qualify for the warranty.
Doors and Windows
You won’t need to worry about having enough space to manoeuvre in and out of the workshop thanks to the large double doors. They open out extremely wide to ensure you can transport even large, bulky machinery with ease. For security, the door is also fitted with a special RIM lock.
There aren’t any windows so this does provide both privacy and security when you’re storing valuable items. However, you also need to consider that there won’t be any lighting in the workshop. So if you are planning on working in there you will either need to leave the doors open or invest in an electrical pack.
Security and Privacy
Waltons has ensured that this workshop is incredible private and secure. When you’re going to be storing expensive machinery and other valuable items, it is imperative you invest in a building that offers maximum security. The RIM lock and windowless design both ensure total privacy. Only you will be able to get into the shed. The strong cladding also has a tight interlocking feature which makes the materials hard to break down.
There are a number of customisation options available, mainly relating to the security and strength of the building. A weatherproof padlock with staple and hasp can provide more security, while the extra strength floor pack and superior duty felt can help to improve the building’s durability. These customisations aren’t really needed as the workshop is already secure and well-protected against the elements. However, we feel that if you are spending such a large sum of money, it is worth spending that little bit more for maximum reassurance.
You also have a lot of choice when it comes to the treatments available. The workshop does come with 5L of Golden Brown Treatment absolutely free. However, if you are looking at adding colour or you’d like a superior quality treatment, you have the option to include those with your order.
So, How Does It All Stack Up?
Ease of assembly7.5/10
As you can expect from a workshop this size, it will require some pretty heavy labour to construct it properly. Never attempt to do this yourself. It is a 2 person job and even then it will take a long time to put it up. It is for this reason we have awarded the building 7.5 out of 10. The panels slot together easy enough and the instructions are well detailed so that is a big advantage.
The strength and security of the building does make it great value for money. However, its high cost does let it down a little. The fact that you need to continually treat the workshop makes it more costly than you first think when buying.
The quality of this workshop really can’t be faulted. A lot of effort has been made by Waltons to ensure the building is safe, secure and ultra-durable.
Longevity of material8.1/10
Once the building has been treated, it will easily withstand the unpredictable British weather. However, its longevity will depend upon the type of treatment used. If you want to ensure the materials last even longer, it is worth investing in the extra strength floor support pack and the superior duty felt.
The wide design of the workshop ensures you receive plenty of storage space. It is a good sized building capable of storing large, bulky equipment.
Final Thoughts: This may be an expensive building but it is designed to an exceptionally high standard. You get peace of mind from one of the industry’s leading manufacturers and it comes with a range of impressive features. While it does take a while to construct and it is hard work, the overall results are definitely worthwhile.
Perhaps its best feature is its security. Windowless and secured with a lock, you have peace of mind that the machinery and other items in your shed are completely protected. Overall we do recommend this shed though we do feel it comes at a pretty high cost.
