Dimensions and Design
Wheelie bin stores are becoming increasingly popular, and this is one of the most attractive and versatile that we’ve seen. The black, blue or green plastic bins have by necessity to be large to deal with a typical household’s waste, but that means they can become a real blight on an otherwise attractive garden. By encasing them in this timber store, you get all the functionality as well as a good looking new garden feature. If you have a timber shed as well, we feel this will complement it perfectly.
When we say versatile, we mean that in our opinion this can also be a very effective log store for people who have log burning stoves or fires. The full opening front would make it easy to take logs in or out, and while the roof stops rain from falling directly onto the logs, the slatted design gives the ventilation that encourages logs to dry out quickly and to therefore be suitable for use as fuel.
We’ve reviewed lots of wheelie bin stores, but this is one of the most generously dimensioned examples. It has a ridge height of 1.28m, an external width of 0.79m on the door side, and an external depth of 0.81m. This makes it more than adequate for a wheelie bin or for a good supply of logs.
Cladding and Floor
The feature we liked most about this store is that it has been subjected to a pressure treatment process. This means that wood preserver has been forced deep into the fibres of the timber, giving it very long lasting protection against rot. This can prove invaluable for timber that’s going to be left outside in all weathers, and it’s not something that we always see on wheelie bin and log stores, or even on some expensive sheds. The cladding itself is also thicker than most that we find, at 8mm, and the frame is very strong and sturdy at 45 X 45mm.
One thing worth noting is that there is no floor, so the store need situating on a level area such as concrete or a patio. The lack of a floor isn’t a problem if you are using this to store a wheelie bin, but if you are keeping logs inside it may be worth installing a floor to keep the bottom layer of los away from ground moisture.
Weather Protection and Durability
Whilst this store is slatted on three sides and open on the other, we were pleased to see a fully boarded and curved roof. This stops water entering directly from above, and it also carries rain harmlessly away along the curve of the timber and then off of an overhang. We were also pleased at how strong the roof is, its thickness of 15mm being almost twice that found on the walls. This creates a very durable and weather resistant structure, particularly if the open side is placed so that it receives protection from a wall or an overhanging roof.
Treatment Requirements and Warranty
Whilst a one year warranty against rot is provided, this is the basic statutory requirement rather than anything supplied by the manufacturer. We would expect the pressure treatment that’s been applied to the timber to make it much longer lasting, and it seems that Rowlinson do as well, as they specify that no annual treatments need to be applied by the customer. Nevertheless, it still makes sense to inspect the timber every year or so to see if any further wood preserver needs to be applied.
No optional extras are available to buy directly with this store, but then again with all fixtures and fittings included not much is needed. One purchase that we do think is worthwhile, however, is an outdoor paint or stain. This not only allows the owner to customise their store to their own liking, it also protects the wood from the UV rays of the sun, and stops the silvering and fading that can otherwise occur.
This may be an inexpensive wheelie bin store, but it was good to see that the manufacture have still shown a commitment to quality as evidenced by the use of pressure treated cladding.
Longevity of Materials
The toughness of the cladding used, and the fact that it has had wood preserver forced into its core, means that this should prove to be durable and reliable.
There is enough room to store a wheelie bin, and have room on each side of it. This also means that a plentiful supply of logs could be stored here if used for that purpose.
Ease of Installation
This can easily be installed by one person, although of course an extra pair of hands always helps. Expect to take around two hours.
We have reviewed cheaper wheelie bin stores, but not of this quality so we still feel this represents good value for money.
Final Thoughts: Every household produces waste, and we all like to recycle as much as possible in this environmentally conscious age, which is why wheelie bins are so useful. The problem is of course, that they’re ugly too. This wheelie bin store solves this problem at a very affordable price, and it could easily be used to store logs as well. It’s made from sustainably sourced wood too, so it’s ideal for green minded consumers. We especially liked the way that the lid can be propped open when in use, and the way that the front gate can be bolted into place, so that it doesn’t bang annoyingly in windy conditions.
