Dimensions and Design
We were pleased to see that this log store features a classic design, with its open front, pent roof, and slatted cladding for the sides, roof, and floor, as we know just how effective this can be. It means that it’s very easy to load and retrieve logs, and they’re kept well ventilated which means that they can dry out quickly, an essential quality for a fuel.
The base width, measured at 1.16m and the base depth, measured at 0.64m, place this firmly in the mid division of the log stores we review, but the overall storage capacity is boosted by its accommodating height. Featuring a pent style roof, it has a peak height of 1.29m and an eaves height at the front of 1.13m.
Cladding and Floor
We were pleased to see that the cladding used on the walls and floor was quite thick, measuring 16mm. Made of solid sheet material, it’s still solid enough to ensure that the store feels very stable when installed. This is vitally important for a structure that’s going to spend all of its time outside, often in areas that are exposed to high winds. The roof, however, was made of 10mm cladding which we would have liked to see thicker.
The floor usually takes the full load of the logs, but in this instance it’s ably supported by four pressure treated floor bearers. We feel this is a very useful addition to the shed, as not only does it help the store deal with heavy loads, it also lifts the structure above ground level, and in doing so protects it from ground moisture that can lead to rot.
Weather Protection and Durability
The addition of these floor joists can have a positive impact on the durability of the log store as a whole, but we would have liked to see the inclusion of a rainproof cover that could be placed over the log store if inclement weather was due. This would help to give temporary protection to the logs inside the shelter, and it would also help to reduce the likelihood of water getting into the timbers themselves. As it is, the slatted roof, even though it has a pitch thanks to its pent design, and open front mean that any logs or firewood kept within the store will have limited weather protection in a storm.
Treatment Requirements and Warranty
One thing that we really liked about this log store is that all of the timbers have been pressure treated, a process in which wood preserver is forced deep into the wood through the use of a vacuum chamber. It’s highly effective at keeping rot at bay, and is the basis for the very long 15 year anti-rot guarantee supplied by the manufacturer.
This guarantee, however, is dependent upon the customer adding their own preservative treatment on an annual basis. On a store as compact as this however, that needn’t take up too much time or money, and it always makes sense to inspect timbers on an annual basis anyway if they are routinely kept outside.
One thing that differentiates this log store from many others is the free firewood package that it includes, a value adding feature that we were very glad to see. There are six elements to it, five bags of ready cut logs and one pack of tinder, and it allows the customer to start using their log store, and their log burning fire or stove, straight away. The value of this kit itself is approximately twenty five pounds, so we feel that it will really be welcomed by people who purchase this log store.
As we’re used to when reviewing Store-Plus log stores, we found high quality on show throughout, and it looks good too.
Longevity of Materials
The pressure treatment used by the manufacturer gives this store the best start to its life, and the floor joists are another feature that adds to the overall durability.
This isn’t one of the taller or wider log stores that we’ve seen, but the good height means that it can still hold a large amount of timber.
Ease of Installation
This is so easy to install that you won’t even need a friend to help you, and full assembly can be completed in less than two hours.
Even though we see some log stores of similar size and capacity for less than a hundred pounds, this has added value thanks to both the firewood pack and its durability.
Final Thoughts: We really appreciated the fact that this log store comes with a generously sized pack of firewood and tinder as well, and we’re sure that customers will also. That’s not the only impressive feature about it, as it also has pressure treated timbers which means that the manufacturer has been confident enough to provide a 15 year guarantee. Yes, there is a requirement for the owner to add more wood preserver every year and we also think that it’s a good idea to paint timbers that are going to be situated outside to prevent their fading in sunlight, but treatments of this sort can be speedily and inexpensively applied on a store of this size.
