Dimensions and Design
The first thing that struck us about this log store is it’s impressive size, as it’s both wider and taller than most that we review. Because it’s so large, it can prevent the need for repeated trips to fetch more logs and firewood, saving time and money down the years. We also think that it’s a good looking log store, and despite its size it blends nicely into a garden background.
The size of this store is demonstrated by the height of the pent roof. The peak height at the back is 2.05m and the eaves height at the front is 1.91m. The overall width including overhang is 2.12m and the overall depth including overhang is 2.17m. The result of this is a store that can contain in excess of a hundred standard sized logs, and with a storage capacity of more than two metres cubed.
Cladding and Floor
A log store as large as this needs to have strong and reliable cladding to give it stability. Thankfully that’s just what we found with this structure, and once assembled it was solid enough to withstand the windy conditions that gardens in the UK are often subjected to.
The floor was made of the same slatted cladding, and what we liked most about it was that it is elevated above ground level by six floor joists. This not only allows even more air to circulate, it also prevents ground moisture from getting into the floor where it could potentially cause rot.
Weather Protection and Durability
Ventilation is essential for the good upkeep of logs that are going to be used as fuel, and we certainly found a plentiful supply of that thanks to the open slatted cladding and the open faced front. Some form of weather protection is provided, however, by the overhanging roof that acts like a canopy, and we were pleasantly surprised at just how effective this is at keeping rain out of the interior, when not in its ‘up’ position that allows easy access to the logs within.
Treatment Requirements and Warranty
Pressure treatment isn’t the cheapest way to apply an initial coating of wood preserver but it is the most effective, so we were pleased to see that it had been used on this log store. Just how effective a deterrent it is can be seen by the fact that the manufacturer has been able to guarantee that there will be no rot for a period of at least 15 years. There is also no requirement for the owner to add any more wood preserver in this time to keep the guarantee valid, although we still recommend checking the substrate every year. We also recommend adding an exterior paint or wood stain, as this helps to preserve this log store’s attractive looks. Failure to paint the timber can lead to it taking on a silver or grey colour over a relatively short space of time, or even becoming cracked or warped.
We can imagine many people who buy this log store also buying some of the very useful optional extras that are offered along with it, so we were pleased to see such a wide selection offered. Perhaps the most useful of them all is a well constructed log saw horse. It means you’ll be able to cut logs quicker and more safely than before, with the wood held securely in place during the operation. Also offered are log carrying bags that allow logs to be transported using just one hand, and a membrane to keep weeds away from the area that the log store is sited upon.
We were pleased to see that despite this log store being larger than those we usually review, there had been no compromise made on the quality of the components.
Longevity of Materials
A fifteen year warranty shows just how confident the manufacturers are in the durability of this shed, and with tough pressure treated cladding used we can see why they have that confidence.
If your log requirement is greater than most, then you’ll probably find this store ideal. Put simply, it has the largest log capacity of any domestic stand alone log store we’ve seen.
Ease of Installation
Despite its size, this is still very quick and easy to install. Allow up to three hours for the self assembly to be completed.
This costs significantly more than many other log stores, and yet if you need one with a large storage capacity we feel that this still offers good value for money.
Final Thoughts: Nearly two hundred and fifty pounds may seem a lot to pay for a log store, but not when it can store as many logs inside as this one. The overhanging roof also gives the logs a good level of protection from rain, and we especially liked the fact that the roof is hinged in the middle so that it can simply be lifted up and over. This makes it simple and safe to reach the logs or wood stored on the upper layer. With a very effective initial wood preserver treatment in place, and pressure treated floor joists protecting against rising moisture, this is a log store that should continue to perform well for years, or even decades, to come.
