This is a great alternative to the standalone greenhouses you typically find on the market. It’s lean to design and pent roof make it perfect for installing up against your home or another building. Despite its pent design, the roof is very tall, ensuring you can grow all kinds of plants, flowers and even small trees with ease. The width of the door is a little slimmer than average, but you’re still given plenty of space to manoeuvre in and out.
Roof and Floor
As mentioned this greenhouse comes with a pent roof. It slopes down towards the front of the building, making it taller at the back than it is at the front. Though it comes with a wooden frame, the roof is fully glazed to make sure your plants receive an excellent level of light. There is an opening roof vent included so you can control the temperature if needed on hotter days. Without ventilation, moisture could occur and this could damage the plants. There is a secured arm to keep the vent open.
You’ll notice it doesn’t actually come with a floor. This is largely for practical reasons. After all, a greenhouse is designed as a place where you can pot, grow and water your plants and flowers. Therefore there’s an extremely high chance that you will end up getting water and soil on the floor. If built on top of a concrete base, this isn’t going to cause any issues with rot like it would if there was a wooden floor there. Of course, it also means you can store heavy lawnmowers and wheelbarrows in the building if needed.
Construction, Frame and Treatment Requirements
We really like the wooden framing included in this greenhouses design. It has a very appealing look thanks to its slightly darker colouration. Its rich, warm tones give it a more charismatic design, ensuring it looks fantastic in any garden setting. It is also really thick, ensuring it is both stable and durable. It will require treatments in order to protect it against the weather. However, UV protection has been added to the greenhouse to ensure the wood doesn’t crack or discolour over time.
We really recommend using a spirit based treatment. These come in fewer colour options than water based treatments, but they last a longer. They also penetrate inside the wood, creating a really strong interior barrier as well as an exterior one. As well as the obvious benefits of this, you also benefit from not having to treat the timber as frequently as you do with a water based variation. Some spirit treatments provide protection for 2-3 years. So if you’re not a huge fan of maintenance, we highly recommend you invest in a superior quality spirit treatment.
Doors and Glazing
There is a single door located on the side of the greenhouse. As the front is lower than the back, the door is placed on the side for maximum height benefits. Like the rest of the building it has a glazed design and it benefits from a lever sash lock. All of the glazing is UV treated and created from shatterproof styrene. This makes it a much safer choice than glass and provides peace of mind for families with pets and children. The glazing measures 2.5mm thick and it provides adequate insulation, though a heater may be required in the colder months.
Security
The fact you can lock the door on this greenhouse is a massive benefit. Not many greenhouses come with security. This means you can also use it as a little storage area. Whilst whatever you do store will be easily seen from the outside, it isn’t going to be easy for a thief to break in. So if you’re looking for a unit which offers security as well as plenty of growing space then this is an ideal model.
Customisation Options and Extras
This is one of the very few greenhouses offered by Waltons which doesn’t come with any customisable or extra options. However, there is one way you can customise the building yourself. As it features a wooden construction, you can use a coloured treatment to alter the overall look of the greenhouse. There are a lot of different coloured water based treatments out there so you won’t have to search hard for one that fits your preferences.
Though it has a pretty basic style, this lean to greenhouse is built with excellent quality materials. It also offers great features which make it stand out from the competition.
Longevity of Materials 9/10
Both the styrene glazing and the strong wooden frame ensure this greenhouse is going to last many years. The UV protection added also ensures the building is safe from the sun’s rays. However, you will need to treat the wooden frame annually.
Most gardeners should find there is more than enough growing space provided. There is even space to store some of your important gardening equipment too.
Ease of Installation 8/10
On the whole this is pretty easy to install. However, you may find it easier to enlist the help of two other people. It is worth noting that if you choose the installation service, it doesn’t include attaching the greenhouse to another building and you will need to do this yourself.
What you get for the low cost of this greenhouse is fantastic. It is one of the more secure buildings available and is sure to last years, making it a very worthwhile investment.
Final Thoughts: When you don’t have enough room for a standalone greenhouse, this fantastic lean-to model is a fantastic alternative. Offering a generously spacious interior, the greenhouse saves space thanks to its great pent roof design. Allowing you to install it against another building such as your home, this model comes packed with a huge amount of great features. For example, its door is completely lockable and it comes with an opening roof vent for better temperature control. It is even backed by a 10 year anti rot guarantee. The styrene glazing is also shatterproof, making it safe around children and pets.
