Playhouse Type And Roof Size
The Crooked Mansion Wooden Playhouse is one of the most interesting looking girls playhouses we have seen in quite some time. We have seen a few kids playhouses have a crooked design like this, but this one is particularly eye catching as it is not over the top with its weirdness like some others are. It is painted in a lovely pink colour which goes very well with the white window frames and door. The house has a lot of personality and we in particular love how it has a little letter box and a chalk board above the door so your child can write their name or just give their house a number. The playhouse is 3 feet 9 inches deep and just over 6 foot in its width. So while not the largest there is still plenty of room for the kids to play and put a lot of toys. At its highest point the playhouse stands at 5 feet 7 inches so there is a nice amount of headroom inside.
The crooked design of the roof is what catches your eye. We really love how they have made this roof look and think it really is a key feature of the playhouse. It is made with some solid boarding, but there is one issue we have with the roof and that is they have only given it a basecoat of treatment. There is no roofing felt included so the roof is at the mercy of the elements which could lead to rot or some other kind of damage much quicker than you would like. So be sure to get some roofing felt. We find it very bizarre that there was none included with it to be honest. You could always just paint the roof with wood treatment, but that would still leave you at the risk of leaks.
Cladding, Frame And Floor
The walls are made with these thicker than they look wooden panels, which as you can see have a very smart design to them which all little girls are sure to really like. But these panels make installing the Crooked Mansion Wooden Playhouse a very straight forward job as they go together very easy and there is not a whole lot of DIY that you have to do.
Talking about the frame is kind of tough when it comes to this playhouse as there is not really something that we would class as a frame inside of here. Sure the panels do have a bit of framing on them to keep the structure secure, but there is not a frame like you would get with a more higher end playhouse inside of here. This may make the playhouse not as sturdy as some others, but it is not something that is worth being alarmed about.
Now let us have a look at the floor, or should we say what floor? The most surprising aspect of this playhouse for us was that it does not include a floor as standard. This is something you have to pay for separately. No floor is something we have come to expect from a plastic or fabric playhouse, but it is certainly disappointing to see one not included with a wooden playhouse. Especially when that playhouse is over £400.
Treatment Requirement And Warranty
The Crooked Mansion Wooden Playhouse is going to need a generous coating of treatment shortly after construction to ensure that rot does not start to appear. A fresh coating on a yearly basis will be required if you want to really make sure the wood is well protected. Even if you do purchase some roofing felt, we strongly suggest that while you have the wood treatment tub out that you consider treating the roof before you put the felt on.
This playhouse comes with a one year manufacturer’s warranty which will protect you in case you have any issues with the materials. We really would have liked to have seen a longer warranty on here, especially considering the price.
Doors And Windows
We love the door that they have used for this playhouse. It has a white frame and it stands out very well. Not only is the door easy on the eyes it is also a very good size and will not be banging open and closed in the wind thanks to a child safe magnetic latch. The door is finished off very nicely with this small cross frame window and a set of strong black hinges.
There are a generous amount of windows on the Crooked Mansion Wooden Playhouse and what we like about them is how they are all different. One is an opening window, the other is a smaller rounded window and then of course you have the small one of the door. You can when installing the playhouse decide what side of the playhouse you have the windows on. Made with Perspex, you do not have to worry about them smashing and leaving glass everywhere.
Security And Privacy
It may not look it, but this is actually a pretty secure girls playhouse. The door will open very easily and not require a lot of effort to do so. But the magnetic catch is strong enough to keep it closed when it is supposed to be.
We feel that this offers a decent amount of privacy for the kids. It has a good amount of windows, but none of them are so large that the whole playhouse is wide open. Still if the kids do not want you watching them play or are planning world domination then you can always install some curtains.
Customisation Options And Extras
As we said earlier, you can actually decide what side of the playhouse the windows will go on so if you want to have a little fun let the kids decide before you install it. This way they will feel like they were part of the design process.
When it comes to extras, we must say that the fact you are expected to pay an extra £74.99 is not something we are happy about. Add to this the fact you will need to purchase some roofing felt and you are looking at least another £100 added onto the price. Honestly if they had just offered this at £500 or even £520, but included the roofing felt and floor then we would probably not have had an issue with it. We just feel a bit sorry for those who purchase this and do not realise it has no floor or roofing felt until it arrives.
We love the way they have used these solid wooden panels to make the playhouse. We do not see you having any problems with these. Plus the fact they used Perspex windows was a very smart design choice.
Longevity Of Materials 7/10
If you look after this playhouse properly then your kids will be able to enjoy it as long as they can fit inside it. But you must treat it regularly and also watch out for that roof which is exposed to the elements.
This is not one of the larger girls playhouses we have seen, but we do feel that its more compact size just means it is ideal for gardens of all shapes and sizes.
Ease Of Installation 9/10
This has been designed with ease of installation in mind and they even say it will just take 30 minutes to install. We think that even people not skilled in DIY will be able to put this together in well under an hour.
As we said before, had they included the floor and the felt and just added another £100 to the overall price then we would not have really noticed or cared. But the fact you do have to spend extra on things that are kind of essential is something we are not too happy about at all.
Final Thoughts: The Crooked Mansion Wooden Playhouse is a great looking playhouse and one that when we first looked at it we were sure was going to be just flat out awesome. Truth be told had this been priced at £500-525 then we would be saying what a great playhouse it was, how well made it was and in general just how much fun your kids will have. But we just cannot get over how it does not include a floor or a roll of roofing felt as standard. If you add the floor and the felt then this is a fantastic playhouse and one that is going to last many years. Just know going in that you are going to have to spend around another £100 on top of the price they are asking to really make it complete. If you are ok with this then we are sure you will be very happy with the playhouse.
