The Hartwood FSC Overlap Tool Chest is the ideal way to keep the kids outdoor toys from laying all over the garden, organise a few tools and even serve as a place to keep all of your gardening items out of the rain. All in all this is just a wonderful way to give your garden a little bit of storage. This is perfect if you do not want a shed taking up a whole lot of space or even if you already have a shed, but want just a little bit extra storage space. It has a very lovely and charming look that will make it fit into any style of garden and the price considering the quality is fantastic.
The cladding used is very attractive overlap cladding that is an impressive 8 mm thick. This cladding is supported with a strong frame that allows the tool chest to take a bit of abuse. Solid sheet boarding has been used for the lid and this is covered with the same kind of high quality sand felt that you would find on a shed. The lid opens wide enough so that you will not have any problems placing items in and out of the tool chest.

Let's Take a Closer Look...
Tool Chest Type And Roof Size
If you are the kind of person who has just a few tools, a couple of pieces of gardening equipment or just a bunch of kids toys clogging up the garden, but do not want to purchase a large shed to store them all in, then the Hartwood FSC Overlap Tool Chest is the answer to your storage problem prayers as this is a good sized, non intrusive way to keep a few items out of the rain and off the lawn. The width is just a little under 5 feet and the depth is 2 feet 8 inches so while not overly large this does offer enough space for things like a couple of garden chairs, some toys and gardening equipment. It is not the highest structure as it stands at only 2 feet high, but at least this way you will not have the worry of throwing out your back as you put something inside or having to pull one of the kids out when they have climbed in here during a game of hide and seek.
The top of this storage tool chest is actually far better made than you would think it would be at this price. On the very top is some high quality sand felt that will protect the solid sheet boarding the top is made from. This felt is the same kind of felt that is used on sheds and summerhouses so we are very impressed with this.
Cladding, Frame And Floor
This is a very sturdy structure and we love the look of it as well and this is because Hartwood have gone for 8 mm thick overlap cladding. Overlap cladding is a style that is not used as much these days so it is always nice to see it every now and again. This kind of cladding does a great job in not allowing rain inside it and it also has a somewhat rustic kind of look to it that we just love.
Hartwood know that this is a structure that is going to have things just be tossed in it and that is why they have gone for a 28 mm x 28 mm frame. This is a very strong frame that is made from the same kind of wood as the cladding. We feel that with how robust this frame is, you are going to be able to put many things inside here and not have to be gentle and careful as you do.
Solid sheet boarding is used for the floor and this is the same kind of boarding which is used for the top. We to be honest are happy with this as this kind of boarding is cheap to use so it does help with the overall cost, but it is also strong enough to take a fair bit of weight. Under the floor there is some well spaced out floor joists that help those boards and also prevent the tool chest from sitting directly on the floor.
Treatment Requirement And Warranty
We really like the way the overlap cladding looks, but this tool chest is only going to be given a very basic, basecoat treatment before it is sent your way. Now this is the norm these days so we are not going to put it down for that, but in order to keep the wood free from rot you are going to have to give it a coating of treatment. Wood treatment should be applied to this once a year in order to keep that smart looking wood safe from rot.
The Hartwood FSC Overlap Tool Chest comes with a ten year guarantee which we feel is very fair, but you must make sure you treat the wood in order for this guarantee to be valid.
Doors And Windows
The top of the tool chest also serves as its door, or actually lid is probably a more appropriate term. This is very well made and it lifts open giving you a whole lot of room to get your items in and out. The low height of the chest means that you do not have to worry about hurting your back by leaning over getting things out. The lid is held in place by a simple piece of wood which if we are honest is not the most elegant looking way to keep the lid open, but it is very efficient and does not require them to increase the price.
No windows or any kind of clear panels are included on this tool chest which is a great decision in our opinion.
Security And Privacy
We are very pleased with how secure this tool store is as it really does provide a very safe place to keep things safe from the rain. Keeping them safe from thieves though will require you to purchase some kind of locking mechanism. We would have liked to have seen some kind of secure way to keep the lid firmly shut, but we must say adding a padlock is not something that is going to cause you any problems so in the grand scheme of things it is not a huge deal, but we still feel that they could have thrown in a padlock.
The lack of any kind of clear panelling or windows makes this something that is very private so there is no way to see inside.
Customisation Options And Extras
We really like the way that this looks and to be honest we feel that even if you just gave it a coating of clear wood treatment that it would look awesome. But if you do want to give this a little bit more style or even just blend in with the other items you have in your garden then a coating of paint is something to consider.
A padlock, chain or something to keep that lid securely shut is the only extra that you will need to consider and even then if you are not planning on putting expensive things inside here then you may not even want to bother with that.
So, How Does It All Stack Up?
This is very well made and the cladding along with that very impressive frame are far higher quality than we thought they would be.
Longevity Of materials8.5/10
You are going to get many years of use out of this tool chest and as long as you do not forget to treat the wood then this is something that will last you well over 20 years.
You are not getting a ton of storage space with this, but at the end of the day we doubt anyone is buying this expecting to get a huge amount of space. Still the amount of space that this offers will allow you to safely store more than a few items.
Ease of installation8.5/10
Only one person is required to install this and as it is not too high, we do not see you having any problems putting this all together.
Value for money8.5/10
At under £100, we feel that this is a very fairly priced tool chest.
Final Thoughts: We feel that the Hartwood FSC Overlap Tool Chest is a very clever way to give your garden a little bit of storage space, but not at the expense of taking over your whole garden. They have done a very good job in designing this product and we are very happy with the quality of this tool chest. It is a budget priced storage chest, but the quality of materials impressed us a great deal. We feel that if you do not have a large garden or even if you just want to give yourself a little bit extra storage space to keep things like the kids toys away from your tools then this would be a very smart purchase.
