Portable storage sheds can be an ideal solution to a modern gardening dilemma. It could be that you often move from a garden in one location to another, or that you spend extended periods at a caravan or holiday home. When you have a high quality portable storage shed, you can simply transport your storage facility with you, adding convenience and saving you time and money when you reach your destination. With an increasing number of models on the market, WhatShed have created this handy guide to the very best portable storage sheds that can be bought online in the UK today.

Here at WhatShed we review garden buildings in every size and variety, so we knew what to look for in our league table of portable storage sheds. We were also determined to ensure that they were easy to find and buy, which is why we’ve only considered sheds that are sold by the UK’s ten leading retailers in this field; between them they account for more than 95% of internet sales.  more...

Our first task, of course, was to define what a portable storage shed is. You’ll find more about our definition below, but of course they had to be compact and lightweight. We were pleased to find ten great sheds deserving of a place in our list, and we then looked at their price and value for money, as well as their durability and visual appeal.

The main question we had to answer here was just how do you define portability when looking at garden sheds? We determined that whilst trailers and vans can accommodate a relatively large storage shed, any dimension of over six foot would make this impractical. As we considered each shed on an individual basis, however, we did make an exception for the six foot by three foot metal shed with a low profile, and which was therefore easy to manoeuvre. Weight also had to be considered, which is why we only considered the very smallest timber sheds. Nevertheless, we did want to include some wooden portable storage sheds as we know that many people still prefer the traditional and classic look of a wooden garden building.

Portability makes a shed even more useful, but truly portable sheds are still relatively rare. We were pleased however to find ten examples of the highest quality that deserved a place in our league table. It’s well done to Keter Manor plastic shed, which takes top spot thanks to a great value price, an attractive design, easy portability, and a long warranty period. Whether you want portable storage sheds or large garden workshops, or anything in between, WhatShed bring you the in depth reviews that can answer all your questions.

Keter Manor Outdoor Plastic Garden Storage Shed, Grey, 4 x 3 ft

Plastic is an ideal substrate when it comes to portable storage sheds, as they are lightweight and yet tough and durable, making them unlikely to be damaged in transit as long as the appropriate care is taken. If you are worried about having something that looks too plastic in your garden, however, this could be the shed to make you change your mind. We’ve reviewed lots of sheds from Keter, and we’re always impressed by their modern and stylish looks. That was the case here as well, with a white wood-effect finish contrasting nicely with dark grey detailing around the door and the apex roof. With a 1.28 x 0.94m base area available, we also think this represents outstanding value for money, which is why it takes its place at the top of our league table.

We were pleased to see that a ventilation panel is included above the doorway, as plastic portable storage sheds can otherwise be prone to condensation build up. We were also impressed with the 10 year manufacturer’s guarantee, and with such a tough and rot and rust proof substrate being used, we wouldn’t be surprised to find that this lasts even longer than this reassuringly long warranty period suggests.

5' x 2'7 Absco Easy Store 1PE Green Metal Garden Shed (1.52m x 0.78m)

One of the great things about the high quality portable storage sheds in our WhatShed league table is that they come in all substrates, so the consumer can find one that appeals to them. This is the first metal shed in our list, which brings with it a unique look and unique benefits as well. This may not be the most elegant or decorate shed that we’ve seen, but we did appreciate the way that the pale green eucalyptus colour scheme blends into a garden background. It also adds an extra layer of protection against the elements, and this allows the manufacturer to provide a 20 year guarantee. That’s longer than we’ve seen with any other portable storage sheds we’ve reviewed, and it helps this compact pent roofed shed take a deserved runner up spot.

One of the things that we liked most about these portable storage sheds, which have a base area of 1.52 x 0.78m, is that they use a unique easy assembly system called SnapTite that’s exclusive to Absco. It means that they should be quick and easy to assemble, without the need for tools, and likely almost as quick to disassemble as well. That means you can easily take down this shed and then reconstruct it when you reach your destination, bringing enhanced portability.

4' x 3' Forest Overlap Apex Pressure Treated Wooden Windowless Shed (1.32m x 0.92m)

Timber sheds may not be the first thing that springs to mind when you think of storage sheds, as they are typically heavier and therefore difficult to manoeuvre once assembled. We are pleased, however, to have found two wooden sheds that are small and compact enough to be moved, and that still have the superior quality needed to find a place in our league table. This is the first example, and we were pleased to find that, even with a base area of 1.22 x 0.89m, this lives up to its Ultimate name in more ways than one.

This has a traditional look that we really admired, thanks to the use of high quality planed shiplap cladding underneath an apex roof. It’s a look that we know is still very popular with consumers as well. There are no windows, but that can become a useful security feature as it means that passers by will be unable to tell if anything of value is being stored inside. What impressed us most however, and which gains this model third place in our list of the very best portable storage sheds, is that the timbers have been pressure treated by the manufacturer. This means that they come with a long 15 year warranty against rot, and also means that the owner saves time and money as they don’t have to retreat the timbers annually.

6' x 3' Palram Grey Skylight Plastic Shed (1.85m x 0.9m)

We’ve reviewed lots of Duramax sheds, and we are always impressed at how tough and strong they appear. We were pleased to find that’s also true of the little hut, their entrance into the portable storage sheds market. That’s because the shed is made out of moulded plastic, giving it excellent weather resistance, but also helping it cope with the knocks and bumps that can typically occur during transit. A sign of just how tough this substrate is, is the long 15 year warranty that Duramax have provided. This not only adds value, it shows the confidence that the manufacturer has in their shed, and after reviewing it, it’s a confidence we share.

This is one of the wider and taller portable storage sheds in our league table, with a width of 1.73m, a depth of 0.97m and a peak height given by the apex roof of 1.99m. You’ll need to take these measurements into account when deciding how to transport it, but with the right planning that shouldn’t be a problem particularly as it’s a relatively lightweight 56 Kg. It’s ivory colour scheme may not be to everyone’s taste, but we liked the overlap style arrangement of the plastic, and it also carries rainwater away quickly and efficiently.

6' x 3' Rowlinson Metal Storette - Garden Storage (1.7m x 0.92m)

This metal store has the largest base area of any of the ten portable storage sheds in this league table, with a width of 1.66m and a depth of 0.84m. It is also however relatively small, with a peak height of just 0.92m. With a weight of just 26.5 Kg as well, we feel that this is still eminently portable with the use of a trailer, or even in the back of a van. It’s made of tough galvanised steel, which gives excellent protection against rain and wind, so we were pleased to see this backed up by a 10 year manufacturer’s warranty.

We also liked the green and white colour paintwork applied to the metal, which will come as a relief to people who don’t anything that looks too silver or metallic on their property. The thing that differentiates these metal storage sheds from any others that we’ve seen, as well as their unique appearance, is that they are incredibly easy to move items in and out of. That’s because the sliding double doors open wide, and the roof is hinged and so lifts up like a lid as well. It was good to see that the door handles are holed and ready for a padlock as well, for added security.

3x2 Suncast New Mannington Large Plastic Garden Storage

Suncast make plastic sheds in all shapes and sizes, and these portable storage sheds have a design that is both practical and original. The base area is very compact, measuring 0.82 x 0.65m. We feel that this makes them ideal for use on lawns where available space is at a premium, and they could also be added to a patio or balcony area. This doesn’t mean that they will be a let down in terms of storage space however, as they have a height of 1.83m, so there’s lots of vertical storage space available.

Being made from blow moulded plastic resin, these tall and thin portable storage sheds are very tough, so we would have liked to see a longer warranty period than the five years provided here. We wouldn’t be surprised to see them far outlast this period however. Being made of plastic they are also not only immune to rot and rust, they are also fire resistant. This means that they should comply with fire safety regulations at caravan and camping parks, and we think that these portable storage sheds are ideal for this purpose, especially if you like to spend extended periods of time at your caravan or in your mobile home on a regular basis.

3’3 x 2 Waltons Grande Wooden Garden Portable Storage Sheds

This is the second wooden building to earn a place within our list of the very best portable storage sheds that can be purchased online in the UK today. It’s not quite as spacious as the Ultimate branded shed that we looked at earlier, as it has a base area of 0.99 x 0.59m and a ridge height at the top of the apex roof of 2.03m. This makes it even easier to transport however, and this is one of the most portable high quality timber sheds that we’ve seen.

Once again we were struck by how stylish this shed looks. We were pleased to see tongue and groove cladding used for the walls, as this adds strength and stability and isn’t something that we always see on the wooden portable storage sheds we review. We were also pleased to find that it comes with a 10 year guarantee against rot, and although that is dependent upon the customer applying annual wood preserver treatments that shouldn’t be too time consuming or costly a task on a shed that’s as compact as this. One other feature that we liked was the inclusion of a set of corner shelves, making it an even more convenient garden storage facility and even better value for money.

4 x 3 BillyOh Suncast Horizontal Portable Storage Sheds

We’ve already seen Suncast’s tall and thin storage solution, and these portable storage sheds from the same manufacturer swap the vertical storage space for horizontal storage space. This is shown by the accommodating 1.35 x 0.83 base area, as compared to its peak height of 1.16m. We feel that this brings advantages other than making it portable and easy to transport, as it means that it can easily be hidden away behind a fence or wall. With a padlock added as well, which we were pleased to find is easy to achieve as it’s built to be padlock-ready, this can be a low cost and yet very secure storage facility.

These portable storage sheds are made from a beige coloured moulded plastic resin with a contrasting dark brown lid. We know that this won’t appeal to everyone, and it’s also one of the most expensive items in our league table, although the price does include a 5 year guarantee, which accounts for its positioning in the final third. On the plus side we like the way that the roof can be used as a lid for easy storing and retrieval, and the way that it curves so that rainwater is carried swiftly away rather than being allowed to sit on the surface.

Rowlinson 4x2 Metal Storette

Despite their name, these portable storage sheds have little in common with most of the pent sheds we review, in that it’s much more compact and has a substantially lower profile. In fact it’s a smaller version of the metal Storette that featured earlier in this league table. It’s smaller dimensions, in this instance the base area is 1.39 x 0.77m, make it even more portable, which in turn makes it ideal for people who are looking for a low cost and yet tough storage facility that they can take with them as they move from one location to another. It’s also by far the cheapest of the portable storage sheds in our list, although the lesser storage space when compared to the larger Storette account for their relative positions within our top ten list.

Despite their size, and their lightweight construction, we found these metal portable storage sheds to be strong and reliable once assembled. Their low profile makes them very stable as well, which we feel makes them a good choice for gardens that are in exposed areas that are often subject to strong winds. With an asking price of not much more than a hundred pounds, these can also make excellent supplemental storage areas to go alongside a larger shed.

5' x 3' (1.42x0.76m) Suncast Resin Conniston Four Vertical Shed - Plastic Garden Storage

We move from the cheapest of our top ten portable storage sheds to the most expensive, and the price tag of considerably more than three hundred pounds is the reason that this Suncast model can be found at the foot of our league table. We were very impressed by just how strong and sturdy this shed will likely be however, particularly considering that it’s quite tall at 2.01m compared to a width of 1.42m and a depth of 0.76m. The reason for this is that it’s made of double walled blow moulded resin that uses the most of modern technology to create a substrate that’s very durable and weather resistant. With this in mind, it’s a pity that the warranty period provided doesn’t last for longer than 5 years.

Style wise, whilst we recognize that it’s white plastic body with curved brown roof may not be to everyone’s taste. We found this strikingly contemporary and pleasing to look at. We feel this should fit in particularly well with gardens that have a lot of white PVC on display, possibly by way of roof lines and conservatories. We also liked the wide opening double doors on these portable storage sheds and the grooved shelf holders inside, although the shelves themselves will have to be bought separately.

I really need a small (ish) storage shed for my partner to house his fishing equipment in so that it doesn’t take up all the storage space in the house but he refuses to put it in our garage as he’s concerned about it getting damp or mice getting to it…. Could you please tell me how damp and rodent-proof the plastic or metal storage buildings are? Thank you.

      Hi Heidi,

With something like the Suncast New Mannington I think you would get the best of both worlds. Its tall and compact and its got a good water tight seal. The hight makes it perfect for storing fishing rods and it has a good bit of room at the bottom for all his boxes. As long as he puts his gear away dry then I don’t see how damp would really get in. They are designed to keep your tools dry outside so if this is neatly sitting in the garage then you should have no problems.

With the above I can say it would be pretty much as rodent-proof as anything. With the distance selling regulations you also have 14 days from receiving the goods to send them back if your not happy (although you might need to cover the return shipping).

      I hope that helps.
