Our verdict on the 8’x20′ Palram Canopia Bella Large Walk In Silver Aluminium Framed Greenhouse

The 8’x20′ Palram Canopia Bella Large Walk In Silver Aluminium Framed Greenhouse holds a 5 Years guarantee, is fit with lockable double doors that use a lockable locking system, and is treated using a galvanised process [1]. The 4 windows used on this particular 8′ x 20′ use a polycarbonate [2] glazing material (Thickness was not specified).

Base material: aluminium [3]

Our experts say this has 4 stand out features. A stand out feature is something found on over 70% of the top 10% of products in a particular category or is an exceptionally good feature as rated by our panel of experts.

1. A 6mm thick cladding like the one used on walls of this greenhouse is one of the best rated by our experts.

2. The polycarbonate construction like the one used on the roof of this greenhouse is rated one of the best by our panel of experts.

3. This polycarbonate glazing material is one that our experts say is one of the best available for windowed greenhouses.

4. A galvanised treatment like the one used on this greenhouse is one our experts are happy to say is one of the best around.

Below is a brief overview of how some of the key points of this greenhouse fairs across the market.

Treatment/Guarantee

The galvanised treatment process used here is the best type of treatment out of 2 [4] types we’ve identified on same-size greenhouses that you’ll see getting used on 17% [5] (137 of 787) of all greenhouses analysed, as well as being used on 23% [6] (18 of 78) of the top 10% of greenhouses. You’ll also find the galvanised treatment showing up on 37% of 8′ x 20′ greenhouses (10 in total [7]), and if we compare this item against those 10 we find it’s Expert Score is 42% higher than the average score for a 8′ x 20′ galvanised greenhouse.

On a metal greenhouse, the guarantee that the manufacturer offers is usually a very good indicator of the quality of the building. The longer the guarantee the more the manufacturer believes in the quality of the building they have produced. Typically we see manufacturer guarantees for metal Greenhouses ranging from zero right up to a 15 years guarantee.

This metal greenhouse comes with a 5 years guarantee. Most metal greenhouse come with a 5 years guarantee (52.56% of them) [8].

For this particular brand (Palram Canopia) they offer 6 [9] different types of guarantees on their metal greenhouses, with the 5 years guarantee on this being the only they offer. The 5 years guarantee is found on 100.00% of Palram Canopia metal greenhouses [10]. It is great that this greenhouse was given one of the highest guarantees offered by the brand, and this shows the manufacturer has a lot of faith in the overall quality of this part of their product range.

When looking at comparable 8′ x 20′ metal greenhouses (we found 27 of them) the most popular guarantee length offered by manufacturers was 10 years [11]. 59.26% came with a missing guarantee, 22.22% came with a 10 year guarantee and 18.52% came with a 5 year guarantee.

Cladding

The aluminium cladding(walls) used here is an about average form of construction for greenhouse walls out of the 2 types [12] we’ve identified on same-size greenhouses, that you’ll also see getting used on 23% (180 of 787) of all greenhouses analysed [13], as well as being used on 6% (5 of 78) of the top 10% of greenhouses [14]. In fact this is the only 8′ x 20′ greenhouse you’ll find that uses an aluminium wall [15].

The walls are 6mm thick and we rate this the best thickness and is the only thickness found on same-size greenhouses [16]. It is used on 1% of all greenhouses [17] and is also used across 5% of the top 10% of greenhouses [18] we analysed. Further analysis shows us that out of all 8′ x 20′ greenhouses this is the only one to use 6mm thick walls [19].

Roofing

Polycarbonate is the material used for the roofing, our experts rate this one of the best forms of roof material and is the only type we’ve found on same-size greenhouses [20]. This roofing material is used on 8% of all greenhouses analysed, and 50% of the top 10% of greenhouses. 22% of 8′ x 20′ greenhouses (6 in total) use polycarbonate construction for the roof, with this product having an Expert Score 7% higher than the average in this regard.

A 6.0mm thick roof material was used on this greenhouse which is the worst thickness used for a roofing material and is the only thickness identified on same-size greenhouses [21]. It’s used on 1% of all greenhouses and 13% of the top 10% of greenhouses. 7% of 8′ x 20′ greenhouses (2 in total) use a 6.0mm thick roof material, and when taking the average Expert Score of those 8′ x 20′ greenhouses (85), the 8’x20′ Palram Canopia Bella Large Walk In Silver Aluminium Framed Greenhouse is just above the average with an Expert Score of 87.

1. Galvanised: Galvanising steel or Zinc Galvanised steel as it is sometimes called refers to the process where steel is immersed into molten zinc. This is where a series of zinc-iron alloy forms a series layers via a metallurgical reaction between the iron and zinc, providing a robust coating which is an integral part of the steel.

Galvanised steel is among the most corrosion resistant due to its sacrificial protection and self-repairing properties. According to the Galvanizers Association they say “Hot dip galvanising offers coverage both externally and internally within hollow sections, it self-repairs when damaged, sacrifices itself to protect the base metal, is environmentally sustainable, has good impact and abrasion-resistance and a maintenance-free life of 50 years or more. Galvanised steel is widely used in applications where corrosion protection is needed and can be identified by the crystallised pattern on the surface (often called a ‘spangle’).”

2. Polycarbonate: Is one of the toughest plastics available. The excellent toughness and thermal stability make Polycarbonate one of the most widely used thermoplastics. This durability makes this ideal for garden equipment and extremely durable plastic garden structure. Polycarbonate is also used for things such as riot shields, vandal proof glazing, safety helmets and headlamp lenses.

According to data from the British Plastics Fedaration the physical properties of Polycarbonate are that it is very good when exposed to high heat with a maximum continuous use temperature of 125 °C. This is coupled with the outstanding Notched Impact Strength data of 60 – 80 Kj/m².

3. Aluminium: Is a very stable metal that has very low corrosion rates in neutral environments (such as domestic garden buildings). The good corrosion resistance of aluminium alloys means that they are perfectly suited for outdoor and industrial environments. This resistance is caused because aluminium is a very reactive metal with a high affinity for oxygen, The reactive character of the aluminium with oxygen means an aluminium oxide film forms on the metal surface that gives it a protective character.

The most common type of aluminium alloys used for architectural structures (such as garden buildings) is the 6XXX Aluminium-magnesium-silicon.

The Aluminium Federation in the article UK Aluminium Industry Fact Sheet 2, Aluminium and Corrosion say “The 6XXX series alloys are the most common amongst aluminium alloys and are widely used in transport, engineering and architecture.” They then go on to say “Most aluminium casting alloys are classified as having good corrosion resistance, and if used for purposes involving exposure out-of-doors, they will suffer no appreciable loss of strength as a result of corrosion. Weathering tests lasting more than ten years, carried out by The Association of Light Alloy Refiners, confirm that there is little difference in the resistance to atmospheric attack of the casting alloys…”
