But that does not mean you cannot still enjoy reading about gardening as well as getting tips, tricks and ideas from other gardeners from the comfort of your own chair. Just down below we have our top gardening blogs. These are a lot of fun and will certainly give you a chuckle as well as some great ideas.
The Physic Blog
First up we have the awesome Physic Blog. Many of us here at WhatShed hold this blog in high esteem. The blog is the brainchild of Sara Venn from Bristol. We know that with a name like The Physic Blog, you may be thinking that she is going to be giving you tips and tricks on how to win the National Lottery! But that is not the case. Instead this is a fun and friendly blog where Sara shares with readers her tip for making all kinds of good stuff like her fantastic prized tomatoes.
Sara is best described as an allotment grower and for those of you who do not have the largest allotment in the word. You will find some great hints and tips here to get the most out of your space. Sara is also really involved with the Bristol gardening community and it is very interesting to read about her adventures helping out fellow gardeners.
Dog Wood Days
Dog Wood Days is a really cool blog and the reason that it caught our eye was that this winter many people in the WhatShed office were moaning about not being able to grow anything. Well Nic Wilson shared with the world her hints and tips for making some lovely chillies, oyster mushrooms and some other great stuff as well all through the winter. While this was what brought us to Dog Wood Days, we had a really good look around the site and love what Nic Wilson has done with it.
To start with she is very into her local community and does a great job sharing some cool things that are happening. Also though, Nic does some great videos on her site so if you are a bit sick of reading you can watch some of her videos. One thing that we really liked was her garden tour. You will feel very jealous as you see her tremendous garden, but she shares with you tips on how you can make your garden or veggies look and be just as great.
The Biking Gardener
Here we have The Biking Gardener which we feel is perfect for those of you who want something a little bit more manly. Geoff Stebbings is the man behind The Biking Gardener and when you have a look at his resume and realise he is a writer, broadcaster, author and of course a keen gardener. You cannot help, but be impressed. He is also a big biker which is sure to score him some major cool points.
What we really like about Geoff is just how easy he makes things seem. Out of all the blogs on this list. Geoff is one of the best when it comes to making something seem simple and getting you pumped up to give it a try. As well as the tips and ideas that Geoff shares with his readers. We really liked some of the pictures of some of the most amazing gardens that he has seen.
The Cynical Gardener
The Cynical Gardener is the creation of June Saddingham. We just love this site and to be honest with you at first we did not really give it the attention it deserved. This is because June Saddingham is one of the best photographers on this list add to this that she is an actual professional horticulturalist and you soon realise that this lady knows exactly what she is talking about. June is great at not just giving you a whole bunch of tips and tricks to get the best out of your garden ranging from things like how to best prepare root sticks and other great tips.
June is one of the best when it comes to actually explaining things. Even some of the less than gifted members of the WhatShed office have had a great time reading up on some of the great tips that June has. As we said the photos on this site are amazing and you will love looking at her pictures. The ones she took of her garden during the winter are just incredible.
Backlane Notebook
If you are the kind of gardener who does not just like to grow plants, but also likes to grow food that you will actually eat. Then Sue and her fantastic Backlane Notebook blog is the perfect blog for you. First of all Sue has a great personality and we loved how her stories really do inspire you to give anything a go. If you have been on the fence about trying to grow something then Sue will certainly give you the confidence to do it.
Now Sue is the kind of gardener who will try and cook with pretty much everything she grows. She has some fantastic ideas such as sweet potato and lentil soup which looked delicious. We also really liked some of the more weird and unusual food that Sue was interested in. The Backlane Notebook is a great blog for those of you who want something that is a little out of the norm.
I Grow Hort
Next up we have I Grow Hort which is a really cool name. What we loved about this blog is the way that it really is a blog for all year round. Bulbs for every month of the year is one of the main attractions of the blog. We think this is just a fantastic idea and if you are a keen gardener then it is awesome to have this blog giving you something new to grow each month of the year. I Grow Hort make it easy for you by suggesting bulbs that have the best chance of survival.
For those of you who think that when winter hits your gardening adventure is over until the spring. Well think again as I Grow Hort make it a point to teach people what can actually grow in the winter and what will just die. For people new to gardening, we have to say that we really believe that this blog is going to help you out. As well as food and flowers, I Grow Hort also has some great tips on things like ways to set up your garden and how to kick any pests to the curb….. things like bugs, not your annoying as hell neighbours.
The Bonnie Gardner
One of the first parts of The Bonnie Gardener you have to check out is the tips on how to keep your garden neat and tidy. With some great organisational ideas, you will find that your garden looks better than ever with the tips here. Of course this is just a small part of The Bonnie Gardner. Nicola the lady behind the Bonnie Gardner is just awesome. We love how she has all these great ideas for not just what to grow in your garden. But also how to go about doing it without spending a fortune. Nicola shows that you can have a truly epic garden without spending a ton of cash. Hopefully one of her future blogs will be about how to grow a money tree!
As well as her own garden and giving you some great ideas for your own garden. Nicola also loves to take photographs of other people’s gardens. Well not just random people, but gardens of castles and other cool places. Honestly this is a great blog and we give Nicola a big green thumbs up for it.
Pyracantha
One of the folks in the WhatShed office made the comment that Pyracantha sounds like the name of a heavy metal album from the 80’s! Being serious though Pyracantha is a tremendous garden blog and one of the best on this list. While there are some great posts in this blog that will help your garden. These are things like how to make some practical screening for your garden and how to stop the neighbour’s cats using your garden as their own personal toilet. Pyracantha is more than just that.
Pyracantha is the best blog when it comes to plants that are a little bit on the weird side. Many of us in the office who read this blog were blown away by the section about how to take care of a Venus Fly Trap. If you want to be the coolest gardener around then you need a Venus Fly Trap. As well as this plants like a Chinese Money Tree are also talked about. If you want something a little more exotic for your garden then you will love this blog.
Pyracantha
Digging For Dirt
Digging For Dirt is a very interesting blog. This is the official blog of Winterbourne House in Birmingham. Which is a lovely set of grounds with some of the most breathtaking gardens that you will ever see. Now clearly there is a great set of gardeners at Winterbourne House so they know what they are talking about. We must say that we think it is unbelievable cool the way that they have taken the time to make this blog and not just show off some amazing pictures of the grounds. But also offer you plenty of tips and ideas to ensure that your garden looks as great as it can be.
They have a Monthly Masterclass section on the blog where each month they will not just give you some advice or an idea, but actually teach you how to pull it off. Pruning ornamental trees, repairing a damaged lawn and teaching you how to sharpen your secateurs are some of the great posts in this section of the blog.
Sharpen Your Spades
Richard Chivers is a real family man and you get a sense of that when you read his blog. We love his more light hearted take on gardening. Anyone who refers to manure as black gold gets a high five from us. As long as he has no “black gold” on his hand of course. Richard shares with his readers some of his favourite things. We got a real kick out of the way that Richard tries to get his family involved as much possible with the allotment.
Sharpen Your Spades is a blog that is just so much fun. While reading about his thoughts and tips on growing certain kinds of food is great. It was his other little tips such as using seed pots to make toilet rolls that really made us chuckle as well as make us think. Richard is one of the very best when it comes to opinionated based posts. He asks such questions as is it worthwhile to grow your own potatoes? And gives you some good valid reasons as to why it is a good idea to have an allotment journal. Above all else this is just a really fun and informative site that you can easily spend an hour or two looking at.
