Some cabins impress you slowly, revealing their strengths over the course of an inspection. Others make their intentions clear the moment you see them. The Tiger Persian (28 mm) is firmly in the latter category. When we inspected the 12 × 10 ft model at the Otley show site, it stood out immediately with its storybook charm — the kind of cabin that looks like it belongs in the corner of a walled herb garden, beside lavender bushes and a half-drunk cup of tea.

It’s a traditional apex-roof garden cabin, built from 28 mm interlocking logs, and visually it leans heavily into a warm, cottage-like aesthetic. The joiner-made Georgian windows and matching half-glazed Georgian double doors give it that quiet English romance that the more contemporary cabins simply can’t emulate. You look at it and think: Yes, I could spend some time in there. It’s inviting in a way some of the more modern models simply aren’t.

First Impressions: Classic Cottage Charm

The Persian is, very consciously, a character piece. The front elevation is where all the styling lives: a pair of Georgian half-glazed doors, flanked by a single joiner-made Georgian opening window measuring 645 × 1045 mm . Together they create a façade that feels both symmetrical and homely.

Unlike some cabins that scatter windows around all four sides, the Persian keeps all glazing to the front wall only, which immediately shapes how you use and site the building. This design means you can confidently tuck it between shrubs, fences or garage walls without losing natural light — a practical feature for smaller gardens, or for buyers who want a cabin that blends in rather than dominates.

The version we inspected — the 12 × 10 ft — carries a ridge height of 2,726 mm and an eaves height of 2,189 mm . In person, this gives it an airy, uncluttered feel. The internal ceiling follows the full apex, making the interior feel significantly larger than the footprint suggests. With no internal rafters cutting across the sightline, the cabin has a simple, open-pitch look reminiscent of a tiny bothy or countryside writing hut.

Joinery Quality: Better Than Expected at 28 mm

The moment you start testing the doors and windows, you notice something important: these are not budget joinery components. They’re the same house-style Georgian double doors that Tiger uses across many of its heavier-wall cabins. They feature:

  • 5-lever mortice lock with brushed chrome handles
  • 4 mm toughened glass
  • Heavy, neat joiner-made frames
  • External and internal architrave trim

All of this comes directly from the technical specification for the Persian .

In hand, the doors close with a satisfying weight. There’s none of the tinny rattle you sometimes get with thinner cabins. The hinges are strong, the operation smooth, and the overall impression is that the Persian punches well above its wall thickness.

One aesthetic note: the horizontal Georgian bars are integrated into the glazing system, but the vertical bars are externally applied. It delivers the correct Georgian look from the outside, but indoors you can clearly see that the vertical pieces sit atop the surface. It doesn’t affect performance, but purists may prefer fully integrated grids.

Internal Light, Space & Atmosphere

The Persian doesn’t aim to be a glasshouse or panoramic studio — this is a traditional front-only glazing cabin, and the light behaves accordingly.

During our inspection we took our standard readings:

  • Outdoor lux: ~1,400
  • Indoor lux (doors closed): ~310
  • Light retention: ~22%

This is entirely as expected for a 28 mm cabin with front-only glazing. It’s bright enough for reading, craft work, or a compact office setup, but it won’t flood with light like a full-pane design.

The ceiling height, especially on the 12 × 10 model, really helps. With an internal ridge height of 2,514 mm and no rafters breaking up the space , you get an uncluttered apex that feels airy and much more open than the footprint implies. In smaller sizes like the 10 × 8 ft, the ceiling is slightly lower (internal ridge: 2,411 mm) but still comfortably roomy .

The absence of side windows also helps create a “cocooning” atmosphere — peaceful, enclosed, and private.

Performance Testing: Field Measurements From Otley

We approached the Persian with the same empirical testing routine we apply to every cabin:

1. Floor Deflection Test

We placed 75 kg at mid-span and measured deflection with a dial gauge.

  • Result: 2.3 mm
  • Interpretation: Excellent. Many 28 mm cabins sink between 3–4 mm under this load. The Persian’s 19 mm tongue-and-groove floorboards combined with 58 × 44 mm tanalised bearers make it feel far more like a 44 mm cabin in floor stiffness.

Walking on it confirms this: the floor feels firm, tight, and stable. No bounce. No hollow sound.

2. Wall Flex (75 kg Lateral Load)

Using controlled lateral pressure:

  • Result: 3.8 mm of movement
  • Interpretation: typical for 28 mm logs. This is where the difference between 28 mm and 44 mm is most noticeable. In a larger cabin (12 × 12 or 14 × 10), this movement becomes more perceptible because of the span. In the Persian’s traditional sizes (10 × 8, 12 × 8, 12 × 10), the flex is noticeable but never concerning.

Shoppers comparing the Persian 28 mm with the Persian 44 mm should note:
The thicker model effectively eliminates this movement entirely.

44mm vs 28mm
28mm vs 44mm

3. Moisture Content

Mid-wall moisture reading:

  • Result: 14%, ideal for slow-grown spruce and expected for a display model.

Anything between 12–16% is the sweet spot. Below 10% risks shrinking; above 18% risks swelling.

4. Sound Reduction

We measured ambient noise at ~63 dB outside and ~53–54 dB inside.

  • Result: 9–10 dB reduction
  • Interpretation: Good for a 28 mm cabin. It knocks the edge off traffic noise but doesn’t approach acoustic insulation territory.

The Georgian glazing, while charming, doesn’t insulate as well as large-pane systems with thicker frames.

5. Natural Light Retention

  • 310 lux inside vs. 1,400 lux outside
  • 22% retention

As noted earlier, ideal for reading or hobbies, but not a bright-art-studio environment.

Construction & Materials: Serious Quality for 28 mm

The Persian uses 28 mm interlocking softwood logs, a step up from the 19 mm modular ranges, but not as heavy-duty as 44 mm. The logs are machined smooth, with tight, gap-free interlocks.

  • Bearers: 58 × 44 mm tanalised
  • Glazing: 3 mm toughened glass in Georgian frames
  • Door size: 1520 × 1880 mm half-glazed Georgian double doors
  • Window size: single 645 × 1045 mm opening window
  • Guarantee: 20 years
  • Timber: slow-grown FSC® European softwood

The machining on the Otley model was excellent: no splintering, no resin bleed, and clean end profiles. The Tiger embossed apex badge and the crisp bargeboards give the roof a tidy, finished look.

Practical Use: What the Persian Is Actually Like to Live With

Inside, the Persian feels warm and traditional. It has a quiet acoustic; not silent, but soft. You can hear the wind outside, but only as a gentle hush. Sunlight enters as a warm plane through the front glazing, giving the cabin a cosy early-afternoon glow.

The 12 × 10 size is the sweet spot of the range. It offers:

  • Enough width for a desk and armchair
  • Enough depth for shelving or storage
  • A roof pitch high enough to feel generous
  • A footprint that doesn’t dominate most UK gardens

For creative work, it’s a comfortable, uncluttered space. As a summerhouse, it’s even better — the Georgian aesthetic naturally lends itself to afternoon reading, tea spaces, and quiet corners for hobbies.

If you want to push it into year-round usage, you’ll want a small heater and a draft excluder at the door. For typical summerhouse use, it’s perfect as is.

Comparisons Within the Persian Range (28 mm)

Here’s how the 12 × 10 sits relative to its siblings:

Size Comments
10 × 8 ft Slightly cosier, lower internal ridge (2,411 mm). Excellent for tiny gardens.
12 × 8 ft Narrower depth, same charming façade. More “hut-like.”
12 × 10 ft(Reviewed) Best balance of airiness, space, and proportions.
14 × 10 ft Bigger wall spans mean slightly more noticeable flex. Internal ridge still 2,514 mm. Good if you need extra width.
14 × 12 / 14 × 14 ft Large, beautiful, but 28 mm begins to show its limits at this size. Upgrade to 44 mm recommended.

28 mm vs 44 mm Persian

If you want:

  • zero wall flex,
  • superior acoustic dampening,
  • more secure joinery,
  • a heavier, more substantial cabin,

— the 44 mm Persian is the better option.

But at 12 × 10 and smaller, the 28 mm Persian performs extremely well and feels robust.

For buyers choosing between thicknesses, my rule is simple:

If you’re going above 12 × 10, choose 44 mm.
If you’re staying at 12 × 10 or below, 28 mm is perfectly sufficient.

Assembly, Maintenance & Longevity

The cabin uses Tiger’s classic interlock system — each log stacks cleanly onto the next, forming a tight wall without the need for adhesives.

Assembly typically takes:

  • 1.5 days for two competent DIYers, or
  • 1 day with Tiger installation.

Once assembled, treatment is critical. Like all Tiger cabins, the Persian arrives untreated and must be coated externally (and ideally internally) with a breathable preservative.

Maintenance cycle:

  • Year 0: two coats
  • Year 2: recoat front wall
  • Every 3–4 years: full recoat

With proper care and a decent base, the Persian easily exceeds its 20-year guarantee.

Real-World Use Cases

The Persian’s personality makes it perfect for:

  • Traditional summerhouses
  • Cosy reading or writing rooms
  • Quiet garden offices (light daytime usage)
  • Hobby spaces (sewing, painting, miniature craft)
  • Garden feature buildings (ornamental placement)

It is less ideal for:

  • Heavy storage
  • Workshops with vibration/machinery
  • High-value equipment (Georgian glazing is not security-oriented)
  • All-year insulated office use without upgrades

Performance Summary Table

Category Result Interpretation
Floor sag (75 kg) 2.3 mm Excellent for 28 mm
Wall flex (75 kg) 3.8 mm Normal for this thickness
Light retention 22% Typical for front-only glazing
Sound reduction 9–10 dB Good but not insulated
Moisture content 14% Ideal
Ceiling height 2,514 mm ridge Airy and spacious
Glazing 3 mm toughened High clarity, moderate insulation
Floor/roof 19 mm T&G Solid underfoot, strong roof

Final Verdict: A Charming, Warm, Highly Usable Cabin

The Tiger Persian (28 mm) left us genuinely impressed at Otley. It has a character few cabins can match, with its Georgian charm, strong joinery, and bright, uncluttered interior.

It’s not pretending to be a modern office pod or a Scandinavian glass chalet. It’s proudly traditional — and all the better for it.

For 12 × 10 and below, the Persian 28 mm is a superb choice: cosy, well-built, charming, and robust enough for daily garden use.
For larger footprints, the 44 mm variant becomes the smarter long-term investment.

But at the size we inspected, it hits that sweet spot beautifully:
traditional warmth, excellent craftsmanship, and a quietly inviting presence that feels at home in any British garden.

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4.7 / 5)
Best For: classic summerhouses, hobbyists, traditionalists, and anyone wanting a cabin with charm and character rather than modern sharp lines.
