This is a premium quality storage shed made from interlocking tongue and groove cladding. It has been designed to hold light to medium tools and equipment, though improvements can be made to the floor to make it more suitable for heavier storage, as well as for use as a small workshop or hobby shed.
- Roof height – 2.20m
- Eaves height – 1.70m
- Door height – 1.66m
- Door width – 1.06m
- Depth – 1.55m
- Width – 2.32m
The height of this building is one of its major benefits. Compared to many other buildings out there, this model has a much taller design, making it incredibly comfortable to manoeuvre around in. Even if you’re on the taller side, you won’t have to duck down to enter or leave the building and you’ll find more than enough interior height to easily walk around. Of course it also increases the shed’s storage potential, enabling you to store items such as fishing rods and tall tools.
The doors also have a wider than average design. So not only do you have a great deal of height to enter the building, you also have a lot of width too. The actual width and depth of the building is pretty small which also makes it suitable for most sized gardens.
Roof and Floor
Solid sheet materials are provided for the roof and floor. These are fairly sturdy and help to keep the initial cost of the building down. The roof’s solid sheet materials measure 8mm thick. Although technically this is strong enough to withstand heavy winds, we’d recommend possibly adding a few roof joists to make it a little more stable.
Like most garden sheds, this one makes use of an apex roof, largely for its water resistant benefits. When the rain hits the roof, it is automatically directed diagonally down, onto the floor below. It doesn’t have anywhere to stop and build up so the level of rot resistance provided is excellent. Waltons have also added a great mineral roofing felt with heavy duty properties. Further protecting the roof from rot, this felt is designed with great longevity in mind.
There’s one other benefit that comes with the apex roof and that’s the amount of height added to the shed’s interior. You’ll notice throughout the central part of the building, it has a very tall, great amount of headroom. This provides the obvious height benefit that it’s more comfortable to move around in. However, it also means you can store taller things such as fishing rods, ladders and light gym equipment.
The floor’s solid sheet material is very slightly thicker than it is on other buildings. We find most sheds that offer solid sheet floors measure 10mm thick. This one however measures 11mm thick. So it’s not exactly a massive difference, but it is still worth pointing out. It’s also worth pointing out that Walton’s also include a free 28mm thick support pack. So really, for the same initial cost you’re getting a 28mm thick floor which makes a huge difference to what you can store.
Cladding and Frame
The exterior of this shed is created with tongue and groove cladding. Generally speaking, tongue and groove is considered the second best type of cladding used on outdoor buildings. Benefitting from an incredible interlocking design, it offers a range of great benefits and is a lot stronger and more reliable than overlap cladding. Most notably, it features a hidden expansion gap which protects the structure of the building if the timber is affected by seasonal changes. For example, did you know that wood can expand if it is exposed to extreme changes in heat or moisture? If this happened on an overlap clad shed, the structure could be compromised. However, the expansion gap stops any changes from affecting the overall structure, making it ultimately safer and more durable.
Now tongue and groove isn’t as weatherproof as Shiplap cladding, but this is reflected in the slightly lower cost. It’s also still extremely long lasting so you know you’re investing in a good quality building. Waltons have included a standard 28mm x 28mm frame with the shed which we always find offers a high strength support, even for the thicker Shiplap clad sheds.
Treatment Requirements and Warranty
With both overlap and tongue and groove buildings, we’d always recommend treating them once each year. This includes treating shortly before or after assembling the building and then once a year thereafter. Tongue and groove cladding does offer slightly longer-lasting natural protection than overlap, but the timber is still going to become damaged over time due to the weather if it isn’t treated.
Regarding actual treatment options, a free water based, resin enriched treatment is included with the shed. This can adequately take care of the first year’s treatment, as well as provide a nice finish thanks to its Golden Brown colour. However, we would recommend using a spirit treatment due to the added protection it provides. Working right into the middle of the timber, these treatments offer an inside-out barrier, helping to ensure even the harshest weather conditions don’t affect the sheds longevity. You can always add the free water based treatment after a spirit treatment has been applied to benefit from the coloured finish.
A 10 year warranty against rot is provided, though as with all of Walton’s buildings, this is only available if you follow the manufacturer’s treatment advice.
Doors and Windows
Double doors feature on the front of the building and we like that they come with a slightly wider design than many other buildings. The small extra width provided actually gives you a lot more space to work with when transferring larger equipment into the building. It also makes retrieving your storage a lot easier too. They offer a ledge design, making it simple to attach a hasp and staple, though they aren’t braced. Whilst we do get the impression the doors wouldn’t sag anyway, as they aren’t braced you may want to look into ways to strengthen them yourself. However, this isn’t necessary, it will simply add to your peace of mind if you are worried about their sagging potential.
The windowless design of the shed gives it a much more secure design. Keeping your storage out of view, it also gives the building a much more solid style.
Security and Privacy
The first thing we should highlight is that this shed doesn’t come with a lock included. So if security is high up on your priority list, we would recommend adding a lock as soon as possible. As it doesn’t come with any windows, this does help boost the building’s security a little however, as well as its privacy. Whilst it isn’t the most secure shed out there, it’s pretty easy and inexpensive to add a lock and help keep your storage safe from intruders.
The shed offers the same three customisation options Waltons tend to offer with the majority of their small sized sheds. These include an extra strength support pack for the floor, various treatments and a superior duty roof felt.
As we’ve already established, this shed comes with a solid sheet floor as standard and the manufacturer has also added a free 28mm support pack. Despite this likely being strong enough to fit most people’s storage needs, we would recommend investing in the extra strength pack too. This provides the strongest type of support and gives you exceptional peace of mind. However, if you will only be storing very light or medium weight items and you are looking to save as much money as possible, this extra strength pack isn’t something you actually need.
The various treatments on offer give you the most benefits when it comes to customising the shed. This is because they come in many different colour variations. If you really want to add a bold look to the building for example, you can opt for the Waltons timber treatment in cedar red. Like other treatments on offer, this one is resin enriched and safe to be used around pets and plants. All of the treatments come with fade resistant, quick drying benefits. If you aren’t too bothered about the colour, we’d recommend sticking with the free 5L Golden Brown treatment supplied with the shed.
The last customisation option is the charcoal superior duty felt. Fibreglass constructed, this felt is really thick and isn’t easily perishable. It will last throughout the seasons. Ensuring the roof is protected not just from rain, but also from any debris which may get blow onto the roof, such as tree branches, during high winds.
Potentially the most important extra on offer, the 5×7 Waltons Portabase is a highly worthwhile investment. Featuring an incredibly solid construction, it gives you an excellent level and firm base to build the shed upon. This is especially advantageous if you haven’t got a concrete surface available. Building the shed on the Portabase will help to drastically improve its stability, as well as make the assembly of the building much easier too.
The only other extra you can add to your purchase is the Waltons padlock with hasp and staple. Measuring a great 49mm, this weatherproof padlock is built with extreme quality in mind. We particularly like the protective cover located over the keyhole, the Thermoplastic weatherproof jacket and the protected, hardened steel chrome plated shackle. It also offers double locking, making it one of the best quality padlocks available.
The tongue and groove construction makes this a high quality building that’s designed to last. Waltons have used high quality timber and made sure to add a few great features to make this shed really stand out from a lot of the competition.
Longevity Of Materials 8/10
The expansion gap included with tongue and groove cladding helps to lengthen the lifespan of the building, accommodating for any warping and other seasonal changes. However, for best results it is highly recommended you maintain its annual treatments.
For a mid-size building, this offers a good amount of storage space. Tongue and groove cladding is also strong enough to support interior shelving or hooks, making it possible to hang heavy tools from the walls.
Ease Of Installation 9/10
It’s always nice to come across a shed that is simple to install. This one benefits from a very simple construction, with the only thing needed to be taken into account being the length of time it will take to assemble. It may not be an overly large shed, but it will still take at least a few hours, if not half a day, to build.
Thanks to the two free gifts you receive with the shed, you receive fantastic value for money. It offers a high quality design, with a low, affordable cost.
Final Thoughts: This is a high quality, hard-wearing shed that is offered at a really good value. It comes with slightly different measurements to many similar buildings and is built with practicality as well as durability in mind. You are given a great amount of storage space and though a lock isn’t included, Waltons do give you the option to add one to your purchase. The fact it comes with a free floor support pack and treatment helps to add to its value, whilst wide double doors make it easy to access the building. We also like that it doesn’t have any windows, ensuring all of your belongings are safely stored away out of view.
