This is a small, but deceptively spacious mid-range storage shed, ideal for light and medium weight tools and equipment. Due to its relatively small size, it cannot be used as a hobby shed or workshop. However, you can increase its storage potential by upgrading the floor, making it more capable of holding the weight of heavier items. What makes it stand out from a lot of other small storage sheds is its impressive height, making it an ideal place to store tall equipment.
- Front height – 1.84m
- Back height – 1.96m
- Door height – 1.68
- Door width – 1.27m
- Depth – 0.79m
- Width – 1.79m
The one thing that strikes us about this building’s measurements is its height. We often find buildings with a pent roof don’t offer the same height benefits as apex roofs. So it makes a refreshing change to see one that provides a fantastically tall design. What’s more, the back is higher than the front, giving it a unique style and making it suitable for installation in front of other buildings. You’ll find it slots nicely under the eaves of summer houses for example.
The doors are also unique in the fact that they are wider than they are on a lot of other storage sheds. All three doors come with the same measurements and they give you the absolute maximum amount of space available. Storing your belongings, no matter how awkwardly shaped they are, has never been easier.
Roof and Floor
It’s not uncommon to see a building of this size feature solid sheet materials on the floor and roof. As they offer a limited amount of storage space, it’s assumed you will only be keeping light to medium weight items in the building. So with this in mind, solid sheet materials are more than adequate to support the weight of whatever you choose to keep in the shed. The roof’s board measures 8mm thick and the floor measures 10mm thick which is exactly what you’ll find in many other buildings. However, what does make this building unique is the pent style roof.
It’s more common to come across apex garden sheds than pent ones. This is because the apex roof typically offers more height than a pent style roof. However, that isn’t the case with this building. It benefits from a fantastically tall design and what’s more, the pent feature means you benefit from great height throughout the entire building, not just centrally like the apex roof design. It also offers excellent water resistance, draining rainwater down the front of the gentle sloping roof, straight onto the floor.
Cladding and Frame
The main structure of this shed is built with Shiplap tongue and groove cladding. This is largely what makes it stand out from other similar sized storage sheds. Known to be the most superior form of cladding, it offers an exceptional level of water resistance and adds incredible longevity to the building.
What sets Shiplap apart from overlap isn’t just the thickness of the timber. It also benefits from a built in groove which acts as a fantastic water channel. This stops rain from soaking into the building; automatically directing it away from the timber and onto the floor. It also comes with the additional benefits of tongue and groove style cladding. This gives it an interlocking structure, further increasing its protection against the weather and ensuring it has a more stable structure.
Standard framing measuring 28mm x 28mm is used, giving an all-round sturdy support. So from the inside out, this shed offers great quality construction.
Treatment Requirements and Warranty
This storage shed does need to be treated, but the good news is you may not necessarily have to treat it every single year. This is because of the high quality, naturally long lasting Shiplap cladding. Already armed with a great weatherproof design, if you use a spirit based treatment on the shed you could potentially get away with treating it every two years. This will depend upon the manufacturer’s instructions which we highly advise you follow.
The reason spirit treatments don’t always need to be applied annually is because they penetrate within the timber, forming an excellent interior barrier. They also form a barrier on the surface of the wood. As rain and heavy winds wear down the outer barrier, they then have to break through the interior one which inevitably takes more time. Of course, not all spirit treatments are created to the same high standard so we do recommend choosing a well-known, reliable brand.
Waltons do give you a free water based treatment in a Golden Brown colour. If you do opt for a spirit treatment, you can always add this free water based one over the top. Not only will this provide even more weather protection, but it will also ensure you still benefit from the attractive Golden Brown finish. Just be aware that the colour won’t be as prominent when placed over a spirit treatment, as it would be if it was simply applied to the wood.
If you keep up with the treatments in accordance to manufacturer instructions, you’ll benefit from the shed’s 10 year anti-rot warranty.
Doors and Windows
For us, the doors are one of the most exciting and unique features of this great little shed. For a start, you have 3, rather than 2 doors. At the front of the building, large double doors open out to almost the full width of the building. This provides an exceptional amount of access and makes storing bulkier items much easier. At the side of the building you’ll also find a single door. Now this one does open out to the full depth of the shed. So in terms of getting your equipment and tools into the building, you’ll have an enormous level of space to work with. We really like that you can access the building from two different angles, ensuring you can get to different tools and equipment without having to move everything. All of the doors also come with a braced design for added stability. Both the double and the single doors are also fitted with a pad bolt for security.
This shed doesn’t have windows and thanks to its size, this won’t cause a problem with lighting. Once the doors are open, natural light floods into the building and you’ll easily be able to see everything without the need for an additional light source.
Security and Privacy
At first glance this shed appears to have pretty impressive security. Pad bolts included on all 3 doors is definitely a great advantage. However, up close we’re slightly concerned about the strength of these bolts. Without a padlock, pad bolts won’t do much in terms of keeping thieves out of the building, though they can help to stop young children from getting inside. However, even if you invest in the exceptional quality padlock on offer from Waltons, there’s still a small security risk in the fact the actual padlocks wouldn’t take too much effort to remove.
So if security is one of your main concerns, we’d recommend getting rid of the pad bolts and instead opting for a hasp lock. It’s not an expensive change to make, it’s more inconvenient really than anything. Privacy is excellent however thanks to its windowless design.
Customisation Options and Extras
No matter which Walton’s shed you look at, you’ll find there are almost always three customisation options available. The first is numerous treatments which enable you to alter the colour of the shed, as well as providing weather resistance to the cladding. A free treatment is included with this shed so technically you won’t need to buy another unless you fancy a different colour. The main treatments available are ‘Duck’s Back’ branded which come with a wax enriched formula. They don’t drip, are odourless, quick drying and 100% safe to use around pets and plants.
Superior Duty felt is another upgrade available, although this isn’t really essential. We do think the heavy duty felt that comes with the shed is a little thin, but it has been designed to withstand the test of time. The superior duty felt will simply give you much better peace of mind due to its tough fibreglass construction. It’s straight forward to add on to the building too thanks to its self-adhesive installation.
The extra strength floor kit is also potentially worth investing in. However, it really depends upon what you want to store. The solid sheet board floor isn’t ideal for heavy tools or equipment. So if you want to expand the sheds storage potential, upgrading with this inexpensive extra strength floor kit would be a good idea.
As for the extras, the 49mm weatherproof padlock, along with free hasp and staple, is worth considering. A superior quality lock, this will help to make sure your storage is fully secure. However, don’t forget you’ll need two padlocks to protect all 3 doors.
A couple of Draper accessories are also available though we don’t really see the point of these. If on the off chance you could do with new DIY equipment such as the cordless drill or spirit level set on offer, then these are obviously going to be pretty useful. However, as the building isn’t really designed as a workshop and it would be too small to work in, we feel these accessories by this well-known manufacturer aren’t really needed.
We’re impressed by the overall quality of the building, there’s just a few niggles that prevent us giving it full ratings. These include the quality of the pad bolts and the strength of the floor. We do feel improvements could be made there, but for the price you are paying we feel you’ll be really surprised just how great the quality actually is.
Longevity Of materials
There are good points and bad points with the longevity of the shed. The Shiplap tongue and groove clad walls come with extraordinary durability, but the floor won’t last if you store anything heavy. So you do need to spend a small amount upgrading this to really benefit from decent longevity.
Obviously this modular shed is only designed to hold a small amount of garden equipment and other storage. However, compared to sheds of a similar size, this one offers a much better use of the space provided. It can easily accommodate the same amount of storage as some slightly larger 6x4 buildings.
Ease of installation
The good news is this shed is very easy to install. It will take just a few hours at the most and we like the simplicity of the instructions provided.
Accessibility and tongue and groove cladding make this shed excellent value for money. It’s one of the best quality small sheds we’ve seen and its range of impressive unique features really help it to stand out from the competition.
Final Thoughts: This is one shed that we really can’t recommend high enough. If you only have a small amount of storage, you’ll find this offers more than enough space to accommodate it. It has been made with exceptional standard materials and is really built to last. Offering excellent value for money, you’ll find it hard to beat this impressive little shed. The pent roof and 3 door entry give it a more unique design and really help it to stand out from the competition. So if you’re looking for a shed that has more than ample storage space, won’t take up much room in the garden and which offers something most other sheds don’t, this is definitely the right choice for you.
