The Windsor Value Shiplap Shed is one of the most popular storage sheds on the market. It has a solid design and offers an incredible amount of storage space. However, due to the value floor, we’d advise against storing anything heavy in here. This also rules it out for use as a workshop unless you upgrade the floor. Its measurements are great, with the door width being one of the most notable features. The average shed door measures 2’2” so at 2’6” you get a really generous amount of space to manoeuvre your storage. The height of the door on the other hand is a little surprising. At just 5’3”, the majority of people are going to need to duck to enter the shed.
Roof and Floor
This shed, like so many, comes with a tall apex roof. It is this which gives the building such extraordinary height. It isn’t the tallest shed on the market, but it still gives you a lot of internal head height, ensuring the building is comfortable to use.
The reason this Shiplap clad shed comes at such an affordable price is because it uses solid sheet board for its roof and floor. Although this is a very common feature you’ll find in most budget outdoor buildings, it isn’t very impressive. The roof isn’t really affected by the weaker material and it can always be strengthened with roof joists which are fairly simple to install. However, it can be an issue with the floor.
As this is a good size building, you may be thinking about storing large, heavy equipment. The bad news is the floor won’t be able to take the weight and will quickly become damaged over time. Pressure treated floor joists do add to its rigidity, but overall it isn’t recommended that you store anything hefty or bulky.
Cladding, Frame and Treatment Requirements
Though this is a fairly simplistic looking shed, it does benefit from strong, protective Shiplap tongue and groove cladding. This is much stronger than traditional and featheredge overlap and it creates a fantastic weatherproof structure. This is largely thanks to not just the smooth finish of the shed, but the built in channel which directs falling rainwater away from the building. It also has a very good interlocking style thanks to the tongue and groove, which prevents drafts, as well as water from entering the shed. To support this great cladding, a 27mm x 32mm frame has been installed on the interior.
At the factory, the timber is basecoat treated to ensure it doesn’t get damaged during shipment. It is important to understand that this protection will not extend past the delivery and the shed will need treating after installation.
Doors and Windows
The door of this shed is unique for two reasons. Firstly, it’s less common to find a single door on a building of this size. Although it does benefit from exceptional width. Secondly, it has three hinges, whereas the majority of shed doors only have two. This means you benefit from a sturdier door that is capable of holding up against heavy daily use. The building has a solid look due to the fact that it has no windows. The only thing you might have trouble with due to the windowless design is lighting. Shed Store do sell a very good, affordable solar light which could eliminate this problem. It isn’t offered as an extra so you will need to find it on the site.
Security and Privacy
The privacy of the shed is brilliant, but the security isn’t. There is only a button catch included on the door which is designed merely to keep it shut. There is no locking system so if your garden isn’t secure, you will need to buy a hasp and staple or pad bolt, along with a padlock. As it is so private, if you do install a good locking device, it is possible to store expensive items in the shed without worrying about them being seen.
Customisation Options and Extras
A Portabase and Portabase installation service are both available for this shed. It’s essential to build any outdoor wooden building onto a smooth, solid surface. Adding a concrete base to the garden could prove expensive if you don’t already have one. That’s where the Portabase DIY Timber Base Kit comes in. Provided with several ground spikes, the base is firmly secured into the ground and it makes the assembly of the shed a lot faster than other bases. It is even pressure treated so it is guaranteed to last a minimum of 15 years. To ensure the base is assembled correctly, there is also an installation service available. This is pretty costly however and we feel the base is pretty simple to set up so the service isn’t really required.
There is an installation service that you might find more useful however and that’s the Garden Building Installation Service. This won’t include base assembly, but professionals will come and put the actual shed up for you. This can save a lot of stress, as well as time. Many customers prefer to add the installation service purely for convenience.
Good quality treatments are also available and they come in a variety of colours. As well as standard brown colours, you can also add a more colourful Ivy Green or Red Cedar. Keep in mind that the shed does already come with a free tub of treatment so buying an extra one now isn’t essential.
The final option which could be useful but isn’t essential is the DIY Assembly Assistance Tool Kit. This features a large collection of very useful tools including safety gloves, goggles, brushes, safety knife, 16 inch saw, a hammer and a screwdriver. It can be used in the assembly of any buildings you buy in future, as well as this one.
The Shiplap clad walls give the shed a high quality look. However, inside the shed the solid sheet floor and roof does lower the quality a little. The roofing felt is also made from cheap quality materials, though this isn’t unusual as most sheds come with the same type of felt. In terms of how much you are paying for the building, it does offer a fantastic quality.
Longevity Of materials 8/10
The exterior is designed to last longer than the interior. However, provided you stick to lightweight storage, the solid sheet materials should last for quite a few years to come. If you’re skilled at DIY, we would recommend enhancing the floors strength where you can. You will also want to look into buying a better quality felt for the roof.
The width and depth provided internally allow you to store a lot of different tools and equipment. There’s also enough strength in the cladding to hold shelves or hooks on the interior walls. So storage potential is great and the wide access into the building makes it easy to store almost anything.
Ease of installation 9/10
Though you could do the installation by yourself, it is recommend two people carry out the assembly. Instructions are easy and you shouldn’t find it difficult slotting the panels together. Estimated assembly time is 2-6 hours.
This is one of the best value for money sheds on offer. Its size and quality cladding provide excellent value.
Final Thoughts: When money isn’t on your side, this outstanding budget shed could be just what you need. Though it does have a very basic design, there are a few things that set it apart. The main one is the Shiplap tongue and groove cladding used on the exterior of the shed. Most budget buildings are created with weaker overlap. The Shiplap gives the shed a more rigid look. We also like that the door contains three hinges for stability. The 10 year anti-rot guarantee is a nice addition and the Shed Store also throw in a great free tub of treatment.
