Shed Type And Roof Size
The Lewis 8 X 6 Shed really is a fantastic looking shed that has a very smart and classy kind of personality. When it comes to its look, it is the kind of shed that really will be a positive addition to any garden that it stands in. This is what we class as a good sized shed. It offers a decent amount of space to make use of, but at the same time you do not need an overly large garden to enjoy it. The width of the shed is 5 feet 10 inches and the depth is 7 feet 10 inches. This is a very ideal amount of space for general storage – things like gardening equipment, tools and even the kids bikes and outdoor toys will all easily be able to fit in here. We also really like the headroom that this shed offers. Along the ridge of the shed the height is 6 feet 7 inches, so walking from the front to the back will not require you to be all hunched over. Even the eaves height is pretty good at 5 feet 9 inches, which is a little higher than the normal 5 feet 7 inches most 8 X 6 sheds tend to go for.
The roof that they have used on this shed is fantastic, even more so when you consider this is a shed that is coming in at under £500. The apex roof will ensure that rain always runs off at the sides of the shed. There is a very slight overhang which you may not notice, but you will be thankful it is there as this will help keep the rain from running down the sides of the shed. The roof is also one of the better looking roofs we have seen on a shed at this price range. They have used 12 mm thick tongue and groove boarding and that is something that really impresses us. First of all this is very strong boarding, so it is able to take the weight of even a foot of snow, but it also looks great and goes very well with the rest of the shed.
Cladding, Frame And Floor
As you can see, the Lewis 8 X 6 Shed has a very smooth kind of look to it and the reason for this is that it is made with tongue and groove shiplap cladding. This cladding is the best you can get on a shed as it offers no little cracks, nooks or crannies for rain to get inside. It is packed together very tightly and offers the ultimate protection from the elements. Also, this kind of cladding looks amazing and really does give the shed a high quality look. This cladding is actually 12 mm thick, so it is every bit as strong as it is easy on the eyes.
Okay, so we know that when it comes to the frame, most of you will be saying, “who cares!” but trust us when we tell you the frame is a very important aspect of the shed. The frame is what keeps it all together and keeping this shed together is an impressive 34 mm x 34 mm frame. This frame which is attached to the cladding makes the shed very, very strong. It is going to really ensure that this is a shed that stands tall and proud for many, many years.
For the flooring they have used the same 12 mm thick tongue and groove boarding that they have for the roof. We are actually very happy to see this. The floor is going to be very strong and able to take a whole lot of weight. The flooring will also not feel cheap or bouncy under your feet like some lower quality floors tend to do sometimes. As this is a shed that you will be actually walking inside, we are very pleased that they have used floor boards that are this strong. Also from a design point of view, the fact the cladding, roof and floor are made in the same style really does give the shed a very smart look.
Treatment Requirement And Warranty
The Lewis 8 X 6 Shed will be protected by the most basic basecoat of treatment during transport, but once installed you will have to give it a generous coating of wood treatment. This to be fair is not a big deal and something most other similar priced sheds require as well. We always suggest that you treat a shed pretty much as soon as you have installed it, as this way it is ready to go right from the start. A fresh coating should be applied once a year. As long as you do this, you will never have any issues with rot and decay.
Like other similar style sheds, this one here comes with a ten year anti rot guarantee. Again, like other sheds, though, it is dependent on you taking proper care of the shed. If you do not treat the shed and then have problems with rot a few years down the line, then you will not be covered.
Doors And Windows
Right on the front of the shed is a single door that is 2 feet 6 inches wide and 5 feet 4 inches high. This is a very decent sized single door and offers more than enough room to get even more awkwardly sized items like a mower and a bike in and out with ease. The size of the door is good, but it is the overall design that really caught our attention. The vertical cladding they have used looks very smart and on the back of the door it is strengthened by double z framing which will make the door feel very solid. Add to this the hidden security hinges and you have one very well made and robust door.
Along one side of the shed are three glass windows. It is actually quite unusual to see glass windows on a shed at this price range, so we are very happy to see them here. These windows are a good size and will let in plenty of natural light into the shed. They are all fixed windows so none of them can be opened, but if you do want some fresh air in the shed, you can always just crack open the door.
Security And Privacy
Security was clearly something on the mind of the person who designed this shed. It has an overall very strong and secure design. They have included a pad bolt on the door, which was great to see as it makes adding a padlock very easy. While a padlock can be picked up in pretty much any pound shop these days, we do feel that they could have thrown one in with this shed.
There are three windows down one side of the shed so if you do want to keep all of your awesome and expensive power tools or your prized bike hidden, you may want to think about adding some blinds, curtains or perhaps just a simple piece of fabric. Or you could always position the shed so that the windows are not facing where any nosy people can look inside.
Customisation Options And Extras
The first customisation option that is worth mentioning is the door. While we feel the default door is great, you can change the doors to larger double doors. You can have a regular set of double doors at a cost of £100.08 or a set of stable style double doors for £67.70. Both of these would look good, but as we said there is nothing wrong the standard door so you might want to keep it as is to save some money. Also, in regards to the door, you can have it so it is on the left side of the shed rather than in the middle. This change is actually free of charge, so it is worth thinking about. If for some reason you do not like the idea of having glass windows, then you can change them to plastic glazing which is worth thinking about if you have kids that will be kicking a ball around near the shed.
This is a shed that requires treatment, so before you settle on the classic and obvious brown, we feel obliged to tell you that these days you can get wood treatment in all kinds of colours. Red, green, blue and everything in between are available, so have a think about using a colour that is a little bit out there if you want to give the shed a bit more of a spark.
There are a few different extras for you to consider. One that may interest you is their installation service, which can be added for £268. This may sound like a lot, but if you are not too handy and worried about installing it yourself it is something to think about. We feel that the floor is one of the best things about this shed, but if you want to give it even more support, then you can actually add a set of floor bearers for the price of £36.96 which is not bad at all, especially if you have any concerns at all about the area of our garden where you will be installing the shed. On the roof is standard mineral felt, but for £20 you can upgrade the felt to heavy duty felt. Things like workbenches and shelving are also on offer as extras, but these are not what we would class as an essential extra. Perhaps the best extra that they offer and the one we actually think you should really consider, is their opening window extra. Here for just £16, you can upgrade one of the windows so that it can be opened.
The quality of this shed is just amazing. We honestly had to keep double checking the price, as this is high quality all the way through with no corners cut anywhere.
Longevity Of Materials
As long as you treat the shed on a annual basis and do not abuse it then we feel that you could actually get a life time of use from this shed. But in order to get this, you have to make sure you do not abuse the shed.
8 X 6 is a very decent sized shed and ideal for most people who just want a little bit of garden storage. With plenty of floor space and a very nice amount of headroom, we are sure that this shed will offer you all the storage space you will ever need.
Ease Of Installation
This is a two person job, but as long as you can both tell the difference between a hammer and a screwdriver, you will be fine. Just take your time, have the kettle always on stand by and you will find this a far more fun experience than you would think.
At under £500, this is one of the best value 8 X 6 sheds we have seen. We say this because the materials they have used are top of the line and they have really made sure that the shed is high quality all the way through.
Final Thoughts: The Lewis 8 X 6 Shed is one of the best sub £500 8 X 6 sheds we have ever seen. We honestly could not be any more impressed with what they have done here. The look of the shed is just amazing. We love the smooth design and are sure you will too when it is standing with pride in your garden. The quality of materials they have used is the most impressive part. 12 mm tongue and groove cladding is used all the way through the shed and this along with the frame makes for one very solid and long lasting shed. If you want a shed that looks good and is very, very strong, then you will struggle to beat this one.
